- The recent big-budget "re-imagining" of Paul Bartel's tacky but wacky original lost all the subversive wit and cartoonish outrageousness that made the property a drive-in cult classic in the first place. He's not in the trailer, but The Real Don Steele steals it as a crazed sportscaster.

I saw this film when I was 12yrs my brother lived behind a drive-in movie theater, so we would have someone go in and park and have a wireless mic that was hooked up to the stereo in the house, and we would go on the roof and watch the movie, sometimes have up to 30 people and beer and girls! Perfably cute! They knew what we where doing but they did try to stop us! They never knew what car the mic was in!
The first time Sly played a villain, the second being Spy Kids 3.
Nathan Forester - Unless you include his brief role as a subway mugger in Woody Allen’s Bananas.
@@Davesky19 True. And also I don't count Suicide Squad because that's about villain characters as heroes.
I bought a DVD copy of this film at BestBuy for less than $15! It included interviews and an audio commentary by Roger Corman & Mary Woronov that I found as entertaining as the film itself! Low budget but lots of fun!
The Golden Era of the cult movie is really over. It peeked in the 70s with all these fun and energetic movies that had no pretentions about themselves, but they were not insultingly frivilous either and sometimes had, such in the case of Dace Race 2000, and dark satiric undertone. Could the movie survive without those additional scenes of violence? I think they add to the absurdity of the story and the scenes themselves are mercifully quick unlike today where it would morbidly linger on the gore
you need to see more cult films then because after Hershel Gordon Lewis released Blood Feast to the drive in and grindhouses, there was a good number of overly violent and bloody cult films in the 70's Last Cannibal World, The Ghastly Ones, I spit on your grave, Zombi 2, Wizard of Gore, etc.
DCT agreed😇
This movie is such a blast!! Good clean fun.
I can listen toLandis all day !
Screenwriter Charles B. Griffith wrote most of Roger Corman's best movies. The only thing missing from this movie is Dick Miller.
Man in 1973 every guy in my 3 grade class wanted to see this
🤘😎🤘
Love John Landis.
Machine Gun Joe Viterbo was the name. And that WAS Mary Woronov being attacked! She was great! Great film!
This man is absolutely Max Landis’ father lmao
Wonder what made him think to mention the big stunt involving aircraft.
Love this movie huge death race 2000 fan📼
I never thought the matte painting was all that bad, I always thought it was kinda cool given the year it was made and the budget they had. If anything they could’ve been smart and covered up the “United States Auto Club” markings on the walls of the speedway they used for certain shots
jennifersman night of the comet quote you’re crazy I’m not crazy I don’t give a beep 🙃
Whoa... John threw some interesting facts here. He was a stunt man. And Lewis Teague did those gore scene, not Paul. Interesting. Makes you think how much a director is involved in the picture, even in the B productions.
Dead Race 2000 is great! The re-make is rather terrible, though. There's also a computer game, called "Carmageddon", that is based on Death Race 2000. It even has a couple of very similar cars.
jublywubly 🍿agreed
Dont agreed remake wasent that bad
You mention Carmageddon as if it's unknown or forgotten. It's a grade A infamous classic man! :D.
C1 and 2 and Reincarnation are all freaking terrific.
I know I saw this. I just don't know when, how old I was, where, or how.
I couldn't see this movie until I turned 18 because it was R rated.
Warp Prime 42 That's so sad. My parents were much more open about that kind of thing.
WarpTV Section42 my father let me watch starship troopers when I was 13 in 1997 on vhs it was my first r rated movie 🎞
ITS VERTURBO DUDE
Little know fact - This was not made in the year 2000
The remake and "sequel".....both crap. Viva Corman and Bartel!
It's a shame that they didn't let Stallone do his sequel. Apparently he wrote one and wanted Tarantino to direct.
No The remake was great hater
*Speed Racer* with live actors...
add a little wacky races too (or mario kart if you're not that old)
Love this movie
Landis felt this film needed a helicopter decapitation or 3...
hi samuel.
You can see the glorious ('70s original) Deathrace 2000 free on TH-cam - search for it >:D
I had a lot more regard for John Landis before he was personally responsible for the deaths of Vic Morrow and two children. Make no mistake, as director he was completely in charge of what happened that terrible day, and I was shocked when he was absolved of guilt after the trial. I work in the industry and if that smug, irresponsible prick ever tries to shoot in Vancouver I'll make it my business to see that he never gets a crew. Do yourself and the film industry a favour John and stop making films.
He was not responsible. It was a fucking accident! Now FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!
Shit happens. Like every time you wake up alive in the morning.
How old are you? 8?
@@vintagevhstreasures4058 he was culpable the pilot knew it shouldn't be performed the way Landis Wanted the stunt done and he kept insisting the helicopter get Lower and lower how low would you want a helicopter to fly over your children ? Movie or not it was completely bad judgement for the sake of a better shot
It was vics ide to rescue those children let it Go already
Actually it was Machine Gun Joe Viterbo. Love this flick!
