One of Don Seigel's best films. It goes on With Invasion OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, THE LINEUP, CHARLEY VARRICK AND JOHN WAYNE's last film The SHOOTIST. An iconic performance by Clint Eastwood, which continued the character through four sequels through the next 17 years. The best sequel is the one Eastwood directed also, SUDDEN IMPACT in 1983.
Dirty Harry torturing the Scorpio killer in San Francisco's Kezar Stadium pretty much defines Harry's character in this movie -- a man willing to do anything to get results.
I'd always thought that ANIMAL HOUSE originated the cliche of women undressing without closing their curtains--but it was in this movie seven years earlier! Favorite cartoonish moment: the killer making the school bus kids sing!
To FC Schaeffer & Geoff Shaw:And don't forget to thank Paul Newman,Steve McQueen & John Mitchum's(Frank DiGeorgio) brother Robert Mitchum for turning down the Dirty Harry role.Robert also turned down Gene Hackman's Oscar winning role of Popeye Doyle in The French Connection.
This came out in my teens just at the time I really started to pay attention to the names on the credits. I was pleased to find that Don Siegel, the director, had already directed some of my favorite movies, like INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, THE LINE UP, RIOT IN CELL BLOCK 11, THE BEGUILED, BABY FACE NELSON, CHARLEY VARRICK, etc.

Insightful and interest review/analysis. Thanks very much.
And John Vernon was the mayor.

@Willie Gordon "No wonder they call him Dirty Harry. Always get the shit-end of the stick."

"I got's ta know" ...
Bashir and Garak play this all the time in the holosuite.
Lol....
But Garak likes to play the cop roll.
John Wayne was also offered the part of Harry Callahan and later regretted turning it down to do another western.

Sinatra also.
NVM, wrote as I was watching, they covered that.
Please check out our video, "Dirty Marti", which is about the daughter of Dirty Harry.

LOL, this trailer is not the PC version...it is the original version. How do I know? The extra gunshot, during the bank robbery, isn't there!!!
I have heard the screenwriter was quite a character.
