  • This MSI Afterburner tutorial shows you how to overclock your PC GPU (Nvidia & AMD) safely to boost performance in all games. This overclocking beginners guide will cover the basics you’ll need to achieve the best GPU overclock. Benchmarks will also be shown to demonstrate the GPU overclocking performance gain you can expect. An overclocking comparison will be made between overclocking your graphics card manually & automatically as well as the benefits. If you want to automatically overclock your GPU, I give you a short MSI Afterburner OC (Overclock Scanner) tutorial. If you’d like a Nvidia performance tuning guide using the Nvidia performance overlay, or a tutorial on how to undervolt your gpu, let me know! Could also make a guide on how to overclock your CPU & RAM safely. Have fun overclocking your Asus, Nvidia, MSI, AMD, Gigabyte, EVGA, ZOTAC, PNY, Sapphire, XFX (etc) GPUs and I hope you enjoy the video!

    MSI Afterburner
Exploring and exceeding the limits of your graphics card might sound scary, but it’s actually easier than you think. MSI Afterburner Overclocking tools provide easy and precise access to your GPU settings. While increasing your GPU’s clock frequency and voltage settings, the fan speed control will enable you to find the perfect balance between performance and temperature.
    MSI Afterburner sliders
    - The Core Voltage slider displays the current master GPU core voltage. Depending on your graphics card mode, the voltage can be represented either explicitly or as an offset added to base voltage.
    - The voltage control is locked by default due to safety reasons for example, if you’ve unlocked voltage control in the bios when overclocking your CPU. When GPU settings synchronization mode is enabled in advanced properties, any changes apply to the master GPU are also applied to all similar GPUs installed on your system. Voltage control is only available on limited sets of graphics card models. If Afterburner doesn’t allow you to unlock voltage control or unlock voltage monitoring, this probably means your GPUs voltage cannot be regulated by this function. Do NOT tick force constant voltage.
    - The Power Limit slider displays the GPU’s power limit. When GPU synchronization mode is enabled, any changes applied to the master GPU are also mirrored to all similar GPUs installed on the system.
    - The Temperature (Temp.) Limit slider is linked to the Power Limit slider.
    - The Core Clock (MHz) Slider displays the current master GPU core clock. Depending on your graphics card model, the clock can be represented either explicitly or as an offset added to base clock. Please remember the minimum allowed shader to core clock ratio is limited by hardware.
    - The Fan Speed slider allows you to either manually or automatically control the GPUs fan speed.
    - If the apply settings at Windows Startup button If enabled, it will apply the current core voltage, power limit, temp limit, core clock, memory clock and fan control settings when Windows starts.
MSI OC Scanner / overclocking scanner test and scan features
    1. Move the sliders for Core Voltage, Power Limit and Temp Limit all the way to the right. Click 'settings' and adjust your fan curve as directed in this video.
    2. Start the OC Scanner by clicking on the button left of the “Core Clock (MHz)” text as highlighted below to open the Voltage/Frequency Curve window.
    3. Scanning is the actual process described above where the algorithm will determine the highest stable frequency on 4 different voltage levels. This process should take around 15 minutes before presenting you with its conclusions. The value of the Core Clock in Afterburner should now show “Curve” instead of a number.
    4. After running the Scanner, it's recommended to run the Test option. The Test script will verify the stability of the profile generated by the OC Scanner and provide the results in a ‘confidence level’. Personally I haven't see any other number than 90%.
    5. Apply the OC Scanner values by clicking the Apply button in Afterburner. You can save the values in a profile as well, in case you want to switch between default values and your OC profile. You can do this by clicking on the Save Icon on the bottom right of Afterburner. The numbers on the left of the icon will start to flash to indicate that you can choose which number you would like to save this profile under. Once you choose a number by clicking on it, that button will become an active profile. This means you can easily switch back to default values by clicking the reset button, but also load up your OC profile by clicking on the profile number and then Apply.
Congratulations, you have just overclocked your graphics card!

Honestly, you deserve more attention + subscribers. Out of 90% of all tech TH-camrs, you are purely the only one who properly explains everything in such good detail while every other TH-camr goes: Do this, do that and done! (And even then, sometimes when you follow their guides they have no idea themselves of what they're doing).
Thank you for your guides, it has massively improved my gaming performance, especially your Nvidia Control Panel guide.

    • @shogoz

I'm really happy that the settings helped you out dude! I understand what you mean because when I turn to TH-cam to find something out, it's pretty hard to find a straight answer sometimes. I wish more people who made tutorials could explain what they were doing and why because it really gives people more confidence that the recommendations actually work, especially if you can show what settings do and how they work! Thank you for your kindness and for taking the time to write a comment. Really appreciate it!

I also have a 2070 and I can get 200 on the core and 800 on the memory. My power limit can increase by 14%. This gives me an overall boost of about 11% over my stock settings. I watched tons of the “serious” videos from other big tech channels and their information was so much more vague than what you’re presenting in yours. Me: "I know a guy."
Seriously, this video is the best video that I used/still use and recommend on how to overclock SAFELY, while still maintaining your sanity even with the amount of information that you give us all because of your humor. Also v4.6.2 is the only stable(?) version of MSIAB to do the automatic overclocking. Newer versions presents an error on all the GPUs that I tried to overclock and my friend nearly bricked a 2090 beacuse the thing crashing mid scan (also he skipped on infos on your vid) and then the GPU continued to heat up without the fan catching up to it. Needed to reinstall the old trusted version to put everything back to place (automatically did something not sure what).
    10/10 would recommend again.

      @pupusas975 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You might have to run the fans all the time, or trigger them to fully run once they reach 30c. Also, once you get your ideal overclock that works, lower the voltage all the way down and see if games still run with your overclock. If it does then your temps will go down and your overclock will still be intact.
The last step is to open up your side panel. That's what I did cause I don't wanna buy better CPU fan. It'll lower the temps considerederably. Test in game with the Riva tuner instead of Kombustor. It's way more accurate.

Alright man I hope everything goes smoothly! It's good that you took your time overclocking instead of rushing because if you rushed you'd probably spend even more time tweaking settings in Afterburner if something weird happens in-game :D

So now i view “increase performance” titles as “make your pc run at the most self destructive level in order to get maximum (im)possible stats.” Your advice helps my pc run well in general. Like meaning i get satisfaction from my pcs performance as well as not having to deal with bs. ez subz

I'm running a 1080 but how come whenever I try to use the overclocking scanner it will just stop and say "Scan cancelled"?
Edit*: I think I figured out why it kept cancelling. I had to go through my actual monitor settings using the buttons and disable "Freesync". So far it hasn't cancelled and it's at 5% now ^-^
    Edit Edit: thing cancelled again...

The reason why OC scanner shows up like that is due to them switching to Nvidia’s driver based OC Scanner. As of Afterburner 4.6.3 beta 2, Afterburner uses this and it actually apples at a driver level. Due to this, the results will apply after reboot even if MSI Afterburner isn’t open. To reset to default values, you press the revert button in OC Scanner (the reset button on the main page won’t do it). If you want to use the old OC scanner, use a version before 4.6.3 beta 2 and make sure you pressed revert before switching. Down downside to this is you will need to have afterburner running all the time as it isn’t applied to the driver unlike the new one.
Edit: apparently Guru3D only keeps the current stable release and the current beta release. Due to this, there is no official way to download 4.6.2. If you plan to do so, do so at your own risk.

I know I'm a little late to the party. I upgraded to MSI Afterburner 4.6.4 (November 21 build I think). I have an MSI RTX 2070 Gaming Z. I did not unlock voltage and left the temp slider at 81 degrees. Didn't touch the defaults and just let the analyzer run. I'm at 1935mhz and 7200 on memory. Temps hold at 76 degrees using Kombustor. With that said, I may try the unlocks and see where it goes. I'm probably going to add another cooling fan at the top of my case. I'm running 1 120mm front, 1 120mm rear, and 1 140mm top right now. I'm also looking to upgrade from an i7 8700 locked with a stock intel fan, to a i9 9900K with a Noctua D-15 Heat Sink. I'm not super serious about overclocking, but a more of a mild tune. I'm trying to extend my systems longevity and boost my VR capabilities.

I don't like the trend of people constantly lying about the performance you can expect to achieve while showing no benchmarks. Even looking at Adamx's thumbnails - his 'how to optimize windows for gaming' one has the typical 300+ fps on the thumbnail. In that particular video I can see he modifies system sensitive areas like registry and runs random programs while not explaining what the purpose is. I mean just thinking about it - does Microsoft really want Windows to underperform to the point where you're constantly touching the system registry, run all these user made random programs to actually give Windows more performance? I doubt it. It's more likely you'll break Windows features in the process.
