  • Hi Everyone!
    Thank you so much for joining me today. I’d like to show you my technique with iron on napkin decoupage. Today we will be making coasters. I prefer the iron on method to help eliminate wrinkles. Very easy and simple process. If this is the first time you are joining me, I welcome you and thank you so much for checking out my channel. I hope you enjoy the video and will subscribe.
    I hope everyone is having a great day and as always, please stay safe and healthy.
    *** I forgot to mention two things in the video. First, I like the unfinished look around the edges, but they can be painted if you prefer and second, in order to use the coaster, they need to cure for roughly 28 days. So if you are thinking about making these as gifts you’ll need to give them plenty of time to cure.

    Try coating the threads of your Mod Podge or paints with Vaseline and the caps will never stick on.😊

    Yay! TH-cam gifted me with this video this morning and I’m impressed both by your techniques and your straightforward and easy to follow instructions. And NO music to distract the viewer!!!!!
    I especially liked you mentioning being anxious and wanting to add more Mod Podge. I struggle with that a lot.
    I’m on a mission to watch your other videos now. You have another happy fan and new subscriber. Thank you!

    Your process is so easy compared to other videos I’ve watched. Some say to paint the tiles with white chalk paint first so that the napkin has something to adhere to. I see you didn’t do that. Have you ever had any problems since you don’t paint the tiles first? How many top coats of mod Podge did you apply after the napkin was ironed on? And THANK YOU for showing how to treat the tiles for hot mugs😊. You’re the first one to do that from the videos I’ve seen.

    • @jodyssimpletreasures4421
      @jodyssimpletreasures4421  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never paint the tiles. By putting a layer of mod podge on and letting it dry, once you iron the napkin on, the heat reactivates the mod podge and the napkin adheres to the tile. I top coat one thin layer of pod podge mainly to make sure the edges are secure. Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching. 😊 Happy crafting!

    I create my own paper designs on a gel plate and I often use tissue paper for that, as you can collage with it most successfully.
    I have used the iron-on method and it works, even with the acrylic paint on my tissue paper prints!
    You really should give it a try. You would love making gel plate prints for your collage. It is so freeing and you get to be the artist from start to finish. having truly original works to give as gifts.
    Big hugs from Texas!

I’m also in napkin swapping groups on Facebook. You will need to have a few napkins to start. Thanks for sharing your process, I’m going to try this. I want to make a suggestion regarding the cumbersome use of your little iron that I thought might be helpful. Since you are left handed stand /plug-in the iron on your left side, that way the plug and cord of the iron would no be in your way. Or place/stand it in front of you and use it with the point of the iron facing you. 🙂

    I am just getting into decoupaging, and like you, love the iron method. I am so into napkins since starting decoupaging, it is getting hard to not buy every pack I like, which turns out to be lots, LOL. I am curious if putting something hot on the tile, does it heat up the glue on the cork side, or do you put sealer on that side too?

      Oh I know! Napkins are very addicting! Are you in any napkin swapping groups on Facebook? I’m in a few and it really helps to be able to swap a few napkins without purchasing a whole package. I’ve never had a problem with the glue heating up on the cork. I imagine it’s because of the high heat engine enamel I use to seal the top. Thanks for watching! Happy crafting!

      Canvas is fine to use the iron on method. I have a video using 4x4 canvases if you want to check that out. You can decoupage foam board but I wouldn’t use an iron. Coat the foam board with mod podge, either the whole thing or you could work in sections. Lay your napkin down then use either Saran Wrap or a baggie to smooth any wrinkles. I prefer the baggie. I put my hand inside and gently smooth the wrinkles out. I hope this helps. Good luck on your project. Thanks so much for watching 😊

    This is such a great video. Thanks so much! I was scrolling through the comments to see if my question on the sealant spray was already asked...it was. But not sure if I am understanding it correctly. After napkin is on the coaster and topcoat of modpodge is applied and is dry, do you wait 24 hrs to spray the heat sealant, and then cure 28 days? Or cure 28 days first, then spray the heat sealant? Thank you! Love the napkins too! Thank you!

    Oh my gosh Jody, you have no idea how relieved I am to have found you. I have made over 70 coasters and thought I had failed because the mugs would stick and leave a ring so I never gifted them. You are the first person that actually mentioned a curing time!!! I've read the comments below but forgive me, I would love more direction. So after the 2 coats of mod podge, I give it a day and then I sprayed them. OR...do you wait 28 days and THEN spray them. Can you please dumb it down and step by step it for me. You would be a lifesaver.

      Hi Kathryn!
      First of all, I’m so sorry that has happened to you. There’s a lot of work that goes into making coasters and trivets, and I’m sure they are beautiful.
      I have found success in letting them cure for 28 days then spraying with high heat engine enamel. It’s the mod podge that’s the culprit. Because it’s a glue, heat will reactivate it and make them sticky. But once they cure for the 28 days, they’re good to go.
      I hope this helps!

I've been trying to sand off the fitting bumps that are on the edges, but if I'm right, it doesn't look like you do that. How do you smooth the edges. Also when using material, how do you do the corner fold overs.? Any help would be appreciated. Flo

      Personally I like the look of the unfinished edges so I don’t do anything to them. I’ve seen others that paint around the edges to add finish to the coaster. For fabric, I would secure the fabric to the sides, then cut the excess at each corner so the ends meet. Almost like wrapping a present. I hope that makes sense and was helpful. I live in a senior complex & somehow I got elected to lead a decoupage class. The complex is going to pay for the supplies, which is nice, but my question is, do I have to use the iron technique? We are going to be decoupaging mason jars, and actually I have only decoupaged once before; so, any advice would be greatly appreciated! I have been watching decoupaging videos for quite sometime now, and have a general idea, so, I think we should be O.K. TFS Take Care & God Bless You as well as our Country!!!

    • @jodyssimpletreasures4421
      @jodyssimpletreasures4421  ปีที่แล้ว

      How fun! I’m sure your class will be great! Another method is using Saran Wrap. You can either stretch it over the mason jar and smooth the wrinkles or crinkle it and dab at the wrinkles. If you do stretch it over the project, peel off carefully as to not pull the napkin off. Personally, I don’t have much luck using Saran Wrap. For jars and vases, I dip my finger in mod podge to smooth wrinkles. Or I use a paint brush dipped in mod podge. I pick those up at Dollar Tree in the craft section.
      But wrinkles are not always a bad thing. It brings out the beauty and uniqueness of a hand made item.
      I hope these tips help. Decoupage is all about patience, practice and having fun. Good luck and happy crafting 😊

      I use VHT high heat engine enamel. I’ve had great results. The most important part of this process (and this is just my opinion) is to let the mod podge cure for 28 days and then seal.
      Thank you for watching. Happy crafting! 😊

    Hello, I am new to decoupage and have watched your video a couple of times. I have a question I am confused about. After you do your 2 coats of modpodge, do you allow it to dry for 24 hours and then you use the high temperature engine enamel, then let that sit for 28 days, or do you let the coaster sit for 28 days, then use the top coat of the engine enamel? I am confused. Could you let me know the correct order to do things? Thanks so much, look forward to starting my first decoupage coaster this weekend. Thank you!

      Hi Lisa,
      I’d be glad to help. Once I put on the second coat of mod podge, I let the coasters cure for 28 days. Then I put the cork on the back and seal with high heat engine enamel. If I’m making them for gift giving, I make sure to make them early enough to allow for the cure time.
      Good luck with your project. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. 😊
      I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
