Many AMT kits have a lot of challenges but you took it with grace. I like what you did with the clear green on the koppa! Turned out nice. Molotow is good for chrome effects but you can't touch it for weeks and weeks or it just turns dull again. Vallejo has some nice metaliser paints that look great but aren't quite chome either but have good colors like aluminum, iron and more. They end up very metal like. For the embosing powder, it does help to water down the glue a little before applying it and do it in sections so it doesn't dry out on you. It took me a long time to get embosing powder down and it still has its challenges from time to time.
I agree, Molotov is way too expensive and it is not better than any other metallic paint. I would also recommend the Vallejo metal colors, ready to spray, and you can touch it later without it becoming dull. If you really want something that looks like chrome, you should use the solvent based chrome paints like the Ammo Mig Alclad paints. Just my two cents 🙂
I have just bought this kit so a useful video. FWIW I think it looks great and I'd be proud of it. Part of the appeal of the Round 2 AMT kits is being able to build the kits of my youth without paying collector prices, so that's a win regardless of the less than Tamiya fit.
Nice job, love the C3 Corvette. Great color too. Two minor things, the carburetor should've been a light gold and I would've done the interior in a tan. Most of these had tan, green or black interiors back then.
A very relaxing video to see this being made! As to your painting, you actually did better work than the real cars when they were made by GM back then. I had a brand new 71 with at least three factory drips on the body not to mention the sloppy resprays in the door jambs.
I have subscribed. Liked your finished product. Nothing wrong with Round2 molding it in color, I love the red base. In fact, everything in white is b-o-r-i-n-g! 😁 Sometimes I keep that base molded color with clear coat, other times paint over it. I never use primer, these models don't rust! lol; but I have no issue getting colors to cover the plastic without primer. No waste of time and money when skipping primer. Painting white on white plastic is actually harder than white over red. Give me the red. I watched with much interest your multi-layer painting technique. I will try it, you use thinner paint and more layers than I have been, but I think coverage will be the same. On the other hand, the amount of flash here disappoints me. I already bought the kit, but had I seen this video sooner I might have not purchased it.
Amazing build and editing. Keeping the tone even on that clear green must have been a challenge. I notice you used sandwich cling wrap to protect some areas from overspray. Never leave that stuff in contact with your paint or bare plastic more than a few minutes, if at all. It has chemicals that will dissolve paint and plastic. I wrapped that stuff around several models during a move and completely ruined them.
The body color is stunning! A little hint when using Alclad Chrome, the surface must be as smooth and glossy as possible. In your case the black seems a little dull to me, which is probably why it didn't work properly with the chrome look. Regards Hans
Nice work on this! I about spit out my drink when you complained about how much primer you needed to use to cover the orange, then promptly painted the engine orange. LOL! Turned out great though!
Yes, that was a hard moment in this build where I questioned many life decisions 😆 thank you for watching and your kind words, I'm glad the subtle joke was not lost on you
You develop skills through repetition. If you were to build this model again, experience would help circumnavigate some of the issues that you had originally. The final product is very well done. Good job.
Thanks for taking the time to come over and check out the video, I appreciate it. Yes a challenge for sure and I learned a lot from it to apply to my next build
Suggestion for using flocking powder. This is the way I do it and usually get excellent results. First and most important, work in MUCH smaller sections at a time, for instance, one side of the floor at a time. Second, use flat enamel paint instead of glue, fairly heavy to keep it from drying too fast, in the color of the flocking powder. Give it a try, it will help hide any light coverage.
I stopped building amt kits when I was making scale models due to their terrible mouldings. I see their quality has changed very little since. The best kits I were making were tamiya ones which are a bit more expensive but their quality is great
You are too hard on yourself. You did a wonderful job and should be proud. I can only imagine how much more advanced you’ll be in a short amount of time. 👍
A good tip from The Scale Modelling Channel is to use tamiya x-22 clear gloss as the glue for the flocking. Works well even after you paint the interior. Works great for me!
A tip I found for dealing with the seam lines is to spray a mist coat of primer first. The primer shows up the seams better than your eyes. Then block sand the whole body. You will see the body, doors, hood and trunk are not flush at all. Body shops do this to insure the body is truly flat ! I wish the kit companies would just mold in white plastic also ! The kit came out fantastic !! Cheers !
You did a commendable job it being a AMT kit. What glues did you use on painted parts? I have always fit issues with many models....except the ones that have a screw to attach it.
CA glue is used on painted parts typically, sometimes PVA glue. Occasionally I will use the Mr Cement SP Black which melts through the lacquer paint enough to hold minor parts in place, but it would probably be inadequate for anything that's going to get stressed.
Best of luck to you when you build it, hopefully this video was helpful in avoiding any of the same troubles I had. Looking forward to seeing your rendition.
Great work.. both on the Corvette and also on the video 👍🏼 Really nice body colour, well done for coming up with this combination. Finished car looks awesome too 👍🏼
27:14-I think you have good skills, as your video shows the process and you are doing an excellent job! AMT kits are beautiful when you finish them, its just that they are relatively hard to get through them as they have fitment issues on EVERY kit! Best bet is to try and pre assemble as much as you can to check for fitment before painting, and even then its not a guarantee! Keep up the good work, love the color and how ell you made this kit look!
Awesome video great looking Corvette model stunning 🔥🔥🔥 although yes AMT kits can be challenging I recently built their new 2021 Bronco kit and I also had fitment issues
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think I have that same 2021 Bronco kit as well, it certainly looks better quality in the box, but I will keep in mind it's not without its own faults when I eventually tackle it. Thanks for the heads up!
Trial and error, and what I've picked up from watching videos of other people way better than me. Sometimes it's based on manufacturer recommendation too, like Alclad says on the bottle what to spray it at.
@@Jimmy-sb3fc Sure thing, sorry it's not a very precise answer, but there are so many variables when it comes to painting what works well for one setup might not be optimal for another. It depends on the type of paint, thinner used, airbrush, etc. I try to provide those details so folks at least have an idea of what works for me and my setup and they can adjust for their accordingly.
I think it turned out great and you are being a bit to hard on yourself. A lot of the AMT/ Round 2 model kits are very old tools and have a lot of fit issues etc. I think you coped really well and did an exellent job. Yeah the hood doesn't fit great but for only your second car , all I can say is WOW! I'm looking forward to more car builds.
Very nice job. I rarely if ever built AMT models as a kid. They have terrible flash and never fit well. I always stuck with Monogram, or if I saved up enough money, Tamiya.
Nice work but I would have chosen different colors for the body/interior. Either tan or light brown with the green body or silver or black with the red interior.
Revell Chrome Spray Paint $35.00 plus tax though - out of my price range or Molotow liquid chrome refill bottle $45 plus I use the Molotow chrome marker pens - they are very nice but not for anything wider then door and window trim
I noticed that you were having some test fit issues with body. That is why I always paint the body last you are always test fitting things. I don't know why you choose that color for the interior with a green body. I would have used a light to dark tan interior or a black interior or white and black interior. All in all it was a beautiful model that you build.
As mentioned in the video, the interior color was not what I expected either. The color came out significantly different than the bottle indicated. It's unfortunate, I do not like the color either, and it really ruins the model.
Looks great. It's clean build and that's what counts. My only critique is the interior color 😢 Corvette marroon was a tad darker, especially door card with the seats a bit lighter and the carpet a separate tone also. That's also a very old mold. I'm proud of you for being patient with it. That's more work than any Tamiya kit would subject you to, but, it's subject mater is worth it. Hint? Next time for carpet, use gloss paint as your glue. Nice.
