- A panel with child actor Danny Lloyd of the original movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. This adaptation of The Shining was based on a novel by Stephen King. This Q&A was conducted with Danny Lloyd in June of this year before Doctor Sleep was released and moderated by Horror Journalist, Mary Reay Arnatt.

Still see Danny in those eyes, he put in one of best child acting performances in history for me, he was very cute and totally convincing...the longing to see him and his mother unharmed, I guess was a big part of the success of the movie and the emotional and psychological rollercoaster the movie is. Terrifying and textured on so many levels. One of my favourite movies, I had it on VHS, DVD, seen it 20 times or more, saw it in the 80s, my mother went to the cinema to see it when it came out.

I actually went to an open casting call for this role when I lived in Colorado Springs. I was a couple of years older than Danny. My relatives knew I wanted to be an actor (or astronaut, race car driver, etc) and so they thought it would be worth a shot. The producers were holding auditions in a condo near Denver. It was very low key and there were very few of us kids around. When I went in, it was just me and a couple of casting directors, plus a guy with a video camera. So there was no reason to be nervous, and yet I was. They were looking for a range of emotions and I just couldn't do it. The last thing they'd be interesting in is a kid who's not at ease with a camera.
When I saw the movie, I was blown away by Danny. He was SO good. Either way, it's cool to be linked in a tiny way to a film that's so legendary. Even if it means that hiring me would've completely ruined the film.

This is off topic, but what always drives me nuts is everybody calling them Grady twins. In the movie, Mr. Ullman says they were about 8 and 10.

Such a humble man and to think that he's giving one of the all-time great child performances in all of cinema and he's still taking no credit for it is very endearing. His sincerity was present as a child and he still has that.
I am blown away by how amazing his memory is considering he was only five when filming started. You can tell he’s highly intelligent and also extremely approachable. He seems like a great guy and I hope he does more conventions.
It probably helps that he was able to see the movie at age 10, and probably more times after that, and likely had a lot of conversations about it. He kept bringing the memories back when they were only 5 years old, which probably "refreshes" the storage and brings them to the front of the mind.
The movie was extensively documented during its creation - in fact, Kubrick's daughter filmed a documentary about the making of the Shining, and there are mountains of online materials which are available for anyone to read. I'm not casting aspersions on Danny, but there are many resources available to him and anyone else to revisit what went on during the filming of this movie.
@@chuckschillingvideos - I’ve seen Vivian’s documentary. And she should’ve remained silent and let everyone else do the criticizing when Dr. Phil exploited Shelly Duvall’s mental health issues. Just my opinion.
@@finster1968 I've never seen it, so cannot comment upon it. I was just suggesting there is a wealth of content out there that can help Danny recall things he might not otherwise remember.

To me, his was the most iconic child performance. Still today, one of my favourite films to watch. Danny Lloyd seems like such a cool, smart and somewhat introverted guy. I absolutely see a lot of Danny (the character) in him, all grown up. So glad he did the interview. He absolutely deserves the recognition, no matter how long ago and how young he was.
Best child performance has to be Linda Blair... but actually, who's competing... they're both Fantastic
@@jimwolfgang9433 no argument Linda Blair did an outstanding performance (and had to handle emotionally demanding acting parts, especially for a child, whilst Danny was more "shielded" from the actual horror he helped bring to the screen). To be fair, she was 14 whilst filming and he was 8. But as you said, there's no competition, they were both fantastic (although as a very personal preference, I enjoyed watching The Shining the most 😉).

@@messiah7344 ya, but the stress from it was legendary. The hardest thing they had to do was hide their grief from Danny Lloyd.
It's so interesting to look at this guy's face and still see that little boy in his eyes and his teeth and his expressions. Danny Torrance was my favorite as I also love french fries and ketchup.

Yes you can certainly still see the young Danny there.
The special qualities he had as a child which led him to get the role come through today. He is easy going, attentive, intelligent and good natured. If anything, that's his own legacy.
He was an amazing child actor and Stanley really brought the best out of his natural ability.

Wow! So this is Danny Lloyd all grown up! He was so amazing in the film and you can easily why the audience had fallen for him and the character.
Love this interview. Danny Lloyd is so authentic, articulate, and grounded. I have sometimes wondered what ever became of this amazing child actor and it is heartwarming to see he is doing fantastic.

What a treat to see the grown-up Danny Lloyd! "The Shining" is my absolutely my favorite movie because it is a masterpiece of horror, deftly composed by Stanley Kubrick, the greatest director next to Fellini. I do appreciate being able to hear Danny clearly, but it was uncomfortable not being able to hear the rest of the speakers.
Federico Fellini couldn’t hold a candle to Kubrick.

In my book Federico Fellini's many movies show a magnificent flowering of style over the period of his lifetime.
Federico is not well-known for one movie (like "Gone With the Wind").
He was known for a whole string of movies that got better and better.
I don't think one can compare directors like Fellini and Kubrick.
If you are an American, you might not appreciate Fellini's magic.
Kubrick was a genius and made a sh-tload of great movies, but Fellini was a titan in his own right.

He seems like a well rounded and down to earth man, with a good adult life. His parents probably did him a huge favor by limiting his acting career to just this one role. I do think that he would have been an excellent actor though, well into adulthood, but he and his family followed what they felt was best..

Danny really looks into his audience members eyes and tries to work out each person's actual intentions to cater to their questions individually. he seems like a very caring individual. this reminds me of why a lot of actors become or have been nurses, carers and in the caring profession - because (great ones anyway) work with the tool of empathy. thats their strength... their weakness I suppose is self involvement.

This was PRECIOUS to watch, thank you so much and Danny Lloyd was fantastic. However I just have to say one thing, and I say this teasingly: shame on the people there for not asking anything about Scatman Crothers or Shelley Duvall, both who are just as great in that movie as Nicholson (who Lloyd gets asked about at least two or three times)! Thankfully, Lloyd himself brought up some great stuff about Shelley (with whom he shares the most scenes), and he brings up that incredible scene with Scatman a bit. This was great, don't get me wrong! I just wish people wouldn't get so hung up on a loop of Nicholson and these idiotic "Room 237" questions (if you need a Kubrick movie to overanalyze, start with 2001 and proceed to Clockwork)! He says right away that he didn't have many scenes with Jack and gives you his impressions and memories of the man, and at some length. So why not ask about somebody else, rather than make him repeat what he had just said? Nobody loves a good Jack story more than me, but people really take those other actors for granted. The Shining without Shelley as Wendy? As a foil to Jack? Fantastic casting choice. In the book, she's a pretty blonde, ala every movie you've ever seen. In the movie, she's brunette and wide-eyed, she's kooky, she's interesting, and she's as weird as Jack and Danny, or any classic Kubrick character. The second greatest female performance in a Kubrick film! (The first is another Shelley........Winters! In "Lolita"). (Right?) :D

@0:29 when he puts his hands together sitting at the table I can see HIM as a boy in the scene talking to Scatman Crothers. I can see it's him! This is actually my first time seeing him outside of that movie.

What a genuine person. I am so glad to see that the Hollywood machine didn't get ahold of this great guy and chew him up.
I would have asked about the cartoon scene with Shelly, and how the tv didn't seem to be plugged in, and if there actually were cartoons playing on it, or if they added them in post.
Although that seems like it would have been really hard with the tech at the time (the video anyway).

He's seems quite humble but it couldn't have been easy for a five year old kid to play back and forth as Danny and Tony.

13:08 when I first saw this movie I was so jealous that he could ride the Big Wheel in this massive hotel but it also scared me because of what he ran into.

He is kinda living the best of both worlds, which is an enviable position to be in. He got to play a main character in a movie directed by Kubrick that will always be in a discussion about best horror movies. But because he quit acting, he doesn't have to worry about people asking for autographs, about paparazzi taking photos of him without his consent and all that crap actors have to deal with.
That face will be engrained in my mind forever when he looked into the camera you could see the little 5 year old thats amazing

I’ve wanted to talk to this guy and ask him questions since 1987. i guess this will do....very good at teaching A&P, as well, I’d imagine.
One of the most frightening scenes was when Danny was so terrified that he began dissociating-answering with his finger as an imaginary being.
He seems like such a nice humble guy. He played an iconic role in an iconic movie based on an iconic book. Saw the movie when I was 12 and it gave me nightmares. No other movie has ever done that to me. His performance made the movie even more chilling as he was such a striking and serious looking child. That juxtaposed to the scenes when he looks absolutely terrified was so effective. One question that stands out to me is how did they get him to do the scene where he is in that catatonic shaking state and saliva is dripping from his mouth? Very disturbing scene for a 5 year old.
The expression in the movie when he “sees the blood rushing in - no matter what he actually saw as an actor - was stupendously frightening, & perfectly performed. NO KIDDIDNG. Kool to see him again. - i see the young Danny around the eyes still today. Really cool to hear from him!
Who else thought for a sec that little Danny was coming and that he wouldn't have aged.

He was going to be at Monsterpalooza in 2020 but they canceled it because of COVID. I SO looked forward to meeting him. Hope I can someday.
To me, I can look at his eyes and still looks like little Danny in the movie! I was 10 when I saw it. My first rated R movie. My dad took me to see it because he said he wanted to show me what the world was really like, he's not far off, Thanks Dad! :-)

Danny Lloyd was a gifted child actor in THE SHINING. His scary expressions he gave cause he and Scatman Crothers knew what was happening before anyone else. So that's what was scary to me. Of course Jack going mad the more they stayed at the Overlook. This was one of my favorite Stanley Kubrick pictures.

I saw a couple of interviews he did during the shooting of the movie and he was a bright young lad very precocious
Fascinating! Not surprising he's so intelligent and well-spoken as an adult given his perfect performance in the movie as a 5 year-old. He's all but unrecognizable...unless you look closely at his eyes. Then it's Danny Torrance for sure. The hospital scene he mentions was definitely in the film. I saw it opening day at Hollywood's Chinese Theater, and that scene was there. In it, Halloran tells Wendy, who sits up in her hospital bed, that they found nothing like what she'd described at the Overlook. Kubrick cut it after those initial performances, probably for time's sake. BTW, seeing Lloyd as a middle-aged man REALLY makes me feel old, given I was younger than he is now when I first saw The Shining!

I thought he was so cute in the movie , loved those hair cuts on kids in the late 70s & early 80s. The other boy that was so cute was the 2nd son in terms of endearment.

Maybe not well-received in the theater, but cable, wow. We watched this 100 times in 1981 at my house. One of the first movies we could get on cable. It was pervasive throughout my life. Just quoted or satirized by other television shows, and people on the street kids at school, as much as any movie ever made.
