I just bought mine few weeks ago, my daily wear were a batman and a sub. This watch, for me, is better. The steel first of all and the craftmanship GS put on it, it is a joy to look at. The vestibility despite the larger measures, I often forget to wear it (but then I look at it, the dial the steel, the cristal, the finitures....joy). The movement is great too probably Rolex as a more precise movement but it is a very slight difference. Is a grail watch. You cannot judge it if you did not have it in your hands.
The movement is based on the Grand Seiko calibre 9S55 (which has now been replaced by the 9S65, with an extended power reserve). This movement runs at 4Hz and can store up to 50 hours of power reserve. It is also known to run within chronometric standards. The Ever-Brilliant Stainless Steel is beautiful, especially with the Zaratsu polishing. Add to that the movement is hand assembled at the same plant as those for the Grand Seiko. I kind of see the reason for the pricing but that price would buy a Seiko with a Spring Drive movement in it. Beautiful watch all things considered.
The movement can run within Cosc, yeah, like literally any movement. But what does that matter, they have a way higher tolerance (-10/+15) out of the factory. Its luck of the draw at the end. If they really would handassamble all 8L35 AND regulated then, why not say so. A few years ago, this movement was in 2 watches, the SBDX001/017 and in a tuna, and even then, it was luck how it ran. And now its in more almost 10 watches and it runs better magically? Wont believe that, without a clear statement from Seiko, everything else is guesswork. ANd yes, this movement has good quality. They should regulate them to chronometer standards in 5 positions so it doesn’t overlap with GS’s 6 position adjustment offering.
They already are regulated, just not to GS standards. I have an SLA065 which uses the same 8L movement and is currently running at + 2 spd. This is within COSC.
Out of all the vintage reissue line I think only this one and the SLA037 are the only ones to get. The everbrillian steel is just special and these are the closest to look and feel of the original.
OMG. Worth every penny for sure. I’m going to optimistically assume they have a volume model in the “basic boring black on bracelet” configuration and start saving now.
Yes Seiko more of this! Addresses the biggest drawback of the LX and MM300 case thickness. Here's hoping for a non ltd edition, bracelet line up of this design in std dial colours?! Great finishing and details - hands and dial looked better than the Tudor, which I guess they should at 6K but still very impressive!
Idk man I love how chunky the LX is. It is also extremely light making it wearable. People who haven’t worn the watch don’t understand that weight is the biggest factor determining comfort.
@@Killua_Overwatch I owned the LX. Absolutely stunning and certainly light weight but just too thick for my liking. If you never have to wear sleeves it might be fine.

Nice watch, I bought mine last week. It’s like an introductory Grand Seiko, I like the Silicone strap it comes with except the retainer moves around too much.
The “L” after the alloy number designates Low Carbon. This formulation was introduced to reduce corrosion in welded joints. By reducing carbon, there is less available to bond with chromium during welding. Losing chromium to chromium carbide formation depletes chromium from the surrounding alloy, reducing its ability to form the rust-preventative chromium oxide surface layer characteristic of all stainless steels.
Hopefully they bring out a non limited edition in a simple black dial with white markers etc. A nice alternative to the SBDX001/017/023 and thinner case so more wearable. I’ll keep my 017 though.
This was a very detailed review and you can tell the effort you took to film the macro video 👍. Thanks Aiden, I kinda dig this diver, even at close to $5k.
I've always wondered why Seiko had never offered a traditional crown tube and gaskets on the crown/crown tube on their mid to upper level dive watches. This is definitely a move in the right (professional watch) direction.
hahahh I forgot to put in a warning. Once you experience a high end seiko its like a drug and you want them all. Similar to the lower end and mid-tier.
Seiko has always been one of my favorite brands. I have seven presently in my collection from the brand. With that said, I don’t know if I will be able to bring myself to spend four grand on the Seiko. I have two luxury divers, An Omega 300 professional and a Tudor Pelagos. They both cost approximately the same price as this Seiko But I wouldn’t trade. My head says it’s a good value but my heart just isn’t in it. Thanks for the great review!
Honestly, consumers buying at those price points arent doing so looking for the most accurate. If thats the argument, Casio battery over Seiko all day right?
Great review man! A beautiful watch and great to see mighty S starting to make top quality divers in the 42mm range - thin too. Case is at Rolex level, dial maybe just behind Omega/Rolex but no dust! The movement is tried and true. And hand finished/assembled - that really means something! I think the watch is close to the money. If it came with a bracelet (and fantastic strap/NATO), it would be totally worth it. But, I won't pull the trigger because of that X! This is top class, classic Japanese design with a crude, derivative, eye grabbing western logo!
Awesome watch and an awesome review! 👏 It is a bit pricy, but I really don't see a problem or the need for being a snob. If I'd buy a watch in that price category, this one would definitely be one of the top picks.
Back in the 1980s I worked for Montgomery Ward department stores. They were going through a bit of an identity crisis at the time. Known mostly for value, and a great option for the middle and lower class, they wanted to polish their image, and compete with stores like Macys rather than go the J.C. Penny route. I'm still trying to decide if this is what Seiko is going through. They keep making great watches, but are they pricing out their base?
They have stated the pivot to go up market was a NEED to survive. Apple watch has done a lot of damage to Seiko. Apple is the largest watch maker in the world! Seiko realized early after the apple watch success and the rise of fakes like steeldive, hiemdollars and proxima and parnis etc.... they are not too big to fail.
Fair enough bro! I always end up never wearing my Seiko divers on bracelet and really do believe Seiko divers should be on straps like they were in the past. But I know todays modern buyer demands bracelets! So will we ever see it? I'm not sure...Depends on how stubborn seiko is with the history aspect.
I am still deciding whether to pull the trigger on this one. If they don’t print that Prospex ‘X’ logo, it would have been in my watch box by now. 😂Good review as usual man. Because of your review, I bought my first 8L (sla043j1)
Thanks for making the first good review of this watch. It really is a nice watch. And they improved so many things that people were critical of on the MM300. I really like the 8L35. I think its in a great movement and is way better than the 6R35. When i was watching some other reviews on this watch people were criticizing the 8L35 like it was some cheap NH35. It’s not. It’s a great movement and nicer than a sellita or ETA 2824 in my experience. Also the fact that they made the dimensions more wearable for people with smaller wrists is a great thing. One of the best statements you made was that some people just want a 4600 dollar watch to have a different brand name. It’s true. Rolex could literally make A Hamilton khaki and put Rolex on the dial and people would be happy to be 4600 for it. Watch collectors can be extremely snobby when it comes to brand names.
Yes the 8L is an older grand seiko movement with less decoration. Hand assembled with no stamped parts like lower end seiko movements. All milled steel and MEMS technology to produce it. Rhodium coated to protect it long term as well. It is many leagues higher then ETA. It stays consistent throughout its life cycle as it avoids drift better then most. Seiko doesn't regulate them to give you a reason to buy a GS. But as you saw in this video its pretty good. And they are SUPER easy to regulate. Tiny screw turn to fast or slow.
Great video. Love the capped seconds hand. Really shows the care for this LE. If I had the extra $$$ I'd buy it, but alas I can't bring myself to sell my MM300 and 60th anniversary urushi chrono to fund it.
Keep it up man sooner or later you will pass up that phony TH-cam watch channels that are begging for subscriptions saying oh this channel is free I am not asking for money such abhorrent channels (I mean the one with 3 letters starting with T and the dinosaur crap 😉) but yours is real and technical just keep the good work.
Do we expect Seiko to make a non-limited version of this watch with a steel bracelet? I really like the case dimensions, bezel, dial, hands, movements. I would buy a non-limited version for $3K.
@@EscapementWatch I love my SPB187, which I'm wearing as I type this...but the hands, the indices, the movement, and the bezel of the SLA055 are substantially nicer. The Zaratsu hand polished case of the SLA055 is also noticeably better than the machine polished case of the SPB187...although I don't say that to take anything away from the very good case and overall finishing of the SPB187. All that being said, the SPB187 is about as nice of a watch as you can buy for around $1,000 and mine spends more time on my wrist than any of my other watches. I consider it a good value...if only for the beautiful casework and dial, and its perfect size. But it isn't a replacement for a watch like the SLA055, and it shouldn't be thought of as so. As you pointed out, it costs 1/4 the price of the SLA055...and if you focus on the details, it's not hard to see why Seiko believes that they're justified in asking so much more for the SLA.
Isn´t this like our prayers have been heard? A smaller marinemaster with the 8L35 movement! It lacks the magic of the sbdx001, but I think they will come with more non limited editions of this one with that superb movement in different colours and themes - for a much lower price. Don´t you think?
Limited edition adds about 150-500 extra in Seiko's so the price wont be much lower "if" they do make a non-limited. Which I doubt it. And more colors? maybe next year or the year after, wont be often.
@@EscapementWatch We’ll see! I think think mm300 is marvellous. however, it gets to thick and big after a while. So this merge would be perfect, but not at that price.
This feels more solid. The crystal I did not take out of the case so I could not measure just the glass. But I image it will be at least 3.5mm thick crystal.
@@EscapementWatch Yeah that probably is their reasoning but with seiko now moving more up market on models like this they really need to start making these cosc or their version of cosc. I’m a full seiko fan (love them) but with much cheaper Swiss options all running within cosc certification it really is a joke that seiko thinks it’s ok to send these out plus 15secs a day.
I can’t imagine you would find one at +15 seconds a day. But i do agree that some third party should come up with a rating system similar to Cosc since non swiss watches can not be cosc certified. It would be cool if there was some kind of lettering on the dial to let you know that the watch was a regulated version of the 8L35. I really can’t think of a swiss watch that compares to this watch in quality for the price. Almost every Swiss watch that is chronometer grade is made of a lesser material with finishing that is not comparable and a movement that is more cheaply made. Seiko’s marketing team should do something to make sure people understand that this movement is far nicer than a regulated ETA or sellita.
@@malkinmalone I own a SLA047 and it runs within their spec which sucks considering the movement in the watch. All the things you have mentioned I agree with and I wish they would be implemented.
This looks beautiful. I'm so torn between a number of the marine master models such as the 047J but I read that the strap on it its not great for the price.
Thanks for the video. Was looking at the SNR045J1 and mm300 at a local AD, but they were too large for my wrist. Does the SLA wear smaller than the SNR? Also might end up getting a black bay 58 instead because the high end Seiko wear so large.
@@EscapementWatch Thanks a lot! So SLA057J1 & SLA057 are all made in Japan, SLA057 is only for US and international market (manual in English) is that correct? 600 peices combined with both model references? Appreciate your response.
Another great review! Although I love the looks of this watch, I’m one of those who can’t stand the date on 4:30 😂 I’m sorry… but other then that, it looks great!
Very nice watch in the middle ground between the MM300 and LX model. I like everything the "stole" from the LX, but what I don't like is that awful 4:30 date window. No matter the manufacturer or watch, it always appears so out of place on the dial in that location. Also, for the retail price, (yes, I understand it's a vintage call back/limited model) it should include a steel bracelet. As you mentioned, probably a better idea to buy on the second hand market. The watches take a beating on resale, I purchased my LX SNR029 for $3300, almost 1/2 retail.
Yea like most watches. Used is always wise. Not many companies can hold value like say Rolex or Patek. Manly powered by the drive of non-watch enthusiasts that lust after them for investments and status on instagram.
@@EscapementWatch no worries, we're good. And it's not the name, that price is out of reach whatever the brand. Love the watch and the review, though 👍👍👍
Yes watch prices keep going up. But to get a skilled GS watchmaker to hand assemble your movement and finish the case probably costs seiko a pretty penny!

Great video! As a Tudor fanboy I have been triggered at various points in this video lol. Personally I think it would help to brand these as Grand Seikos at this price point & fit them with the regulated GS version of this movement. A bracelet option wouldn't go a miss either!
hahah I love my Tudor bb58 the style is so me. So although the bezel doesn't quite line up. Its dusty and has the worst hand finishing I've seen in 2 years on any watch, I still love it!
@@EscapementWatch I've got the blue dial version & the hand finishing is really good under a loop & I can't find any dust either, I wonder if there is any difference in the finishing process between the silver & gilt hands?
nah its probably just luck. But to find the dust you have to hit the light on the side of the crystal and look with the loop on the sides. If you look head on like normal you WONT SEE THEM. Its hard to find them. But the way I shoot. I can see all dust on all the watches. Every watch is going to be luck. I just reviewed a rolex air king had soooo sooo much dust. 5x my tudor. never seen a rolex like that before! Most are very little to non like this seiko. The rolex 36mm explorer I just reviewed had a chip in the dial. A defect I showed in the macros. So just random luck with the finishing.
A gorgeous diver. I hope seiko start selling movement parts (and crown tubes), otherwise service is going to be Seiko Japan only and extremely expensive.
What is your wrist size? I think for the steel alone the SLA055 should win! The dial on the 055 is also nicer indices finish. But 051 is 1. cheaper and 2. has the Uemura history and 3. has bracelet. Tough choice! hahah
@@EscapementWatch Almost 7” (princess size). I can get 051 for $2450 usd and 055 for $5000 usd. I need to justify paying double for case, exotic dial, and limited pieces (1300). Both are 200m right? and iconic pieces… 🤔 Dunno what to do! Oh God!
I like the brushed surface of the SLA 043 better, but this one sits nicer on the wrist with more of a cushion case and balanced feel then the SLA043. It is thicker at 14.1 with the box sapphire and felt like it sat higher than this.

hahahh I forgot to put in a warning. Once you experience a high end seiko its like a drug and you want them all. Similar to the lower end and mid-tier.
Rewatching your SLA055 video again. Your review and macro shots are excellent! Best Seiko I’ve seen on your wrist so far!
Wow, thanks!
Love it! Seiko's spring drive is the most accurate time watch beating out Rolex, omega, patek, etc...
Indeed it is!
Honestly, consumers buying at those price points arent doing so looking for the most accurate. If thats the argument, Casio battery over Seiko all day right?
first detailed review and you knocked it out of the park!
Much appreciated!
The nato it comes with is top notch! The best in the business comfort/quality wise.
I would argue the ever brilliant steel is above Rolex
@@Killua_Overwatch elaborate pls !
Awesome watch and an awesome review! 👏 It is a bit pricy, but I really don't see a problem or the need for being a snob. If I'd buy a watch in that price category, this one would definitely be one of the top picks.
Well said!
$4,600 USD rubber strap I won't do it. I'll stick with buying SLA021 this upcoming January.
Do it , you get more for less money. Also fyi I hate the clasp on the mm300 but it's easy to replace.
Speechless and counting my dimes! Very nice watch but for the close price to LX looks like pricey to me. Great video as usual Bro 👌🏻
Thanks for watching!
I am still deciding whether to pull the trigger on this one. If they don’t print that Prospex ‘X’ logo, it would have been in my watch box by now. 😂Good review as usual man. Because of your review, I bought my first 8L (sla043j1)
Good choice! Well if you want this one that I reviewed is still up for grabs. Running pretty good. Email me for details if your ready.
The presage lineup needs that movement considering it’s a baby Grand Seiko!
I’m excited for this watch. Just wish it came with a bracelet.
No worries! Seiko Divers should always be on straps!
The raised, glittered lettering on my bb58 pissed me off so I sold it.. About to receive my sla057 soon
Thanks to Kavar Jewellers for letting us CHECK THIS ONE OUT! FOR SALE: email me if you are interested. Check the description: www.kavarjewellers.ca/
Best channel for watches no doubt beats boring TGV
Indeed a great, beautiful watch! Agree that it isn’t overpriced
Just picked up that strap on eBay for my sla021! Only one I could find anywhere 👍🏻 great job on the review as always !
Awesome! Thank you!
You did a good job with this
Great video. Love the capped seconds hand. Really shows the care for this LE. If I had the extra $$$ I'd buy it, but alas I can't bring myself to sell my MM300 and 60th anniversary urushi chrono to fund it.
Well said!
Great review, glad I found this channel. Very informative and positive attitude! Subscribed! 👍🏻
My man used the Ed, Edd, Eddy sumo sound effect. You got yourself a sub.
Hi what's the lift value for this movement when putting it on the time grapher? Thanks
Mm300 has a stronger 12 o’clock indice sheild, this is a bit more tapered like the mm200
WHAT A GREAT REVIEW, INFORMATIVE, INTERESTING, STATUS QUO CHALLENGING AND HONEST. KUDOS
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful watch! While I’m a Seiko fan (9 in the collection), there’s just no way I could spend this kind of money on one.
variety is the spice of life eh!
Oh boy, I was waiting to see this one!!!!!! Simply stunning.
Gorgeous man, thanks and congrats for the video !
Thanks for watching!
Now that is an impressive movement.
Agree with you about the crown. Don't need it signed but if they do it's better with the word Seiko as opposed to the S
Yeah once I got the king seiko I really started to like the word SEIKO on the crown, clean and simple over the stylized "S"
Hey FT, late to the party on this one but looks stunning. Did you do the secret measurement (bezel)?
Yeah it got lost in the edit. But it is 41.6mm
Thanks! Awesome review as always.
Please make a video about the SARB013! I would love to see your take on it.
Please please tell me from where can I have a hat like that. Or just the Seiko tag? Thank you
Yes it is a Seiko tag stitched onto a high quality trucker hat!
Thanks so much for another great video! E&W 😀
Do we expect Seiko to make a non-limited version of this watch with a steel bracelet? I really like the case dimensions, bezel, dial, hands, movements. I would buy a non-limited version for $3K.
They ALREADY DO!!!! Check out the mm200 SPB187 I reviewed! 1/4 the price! Similar dimensions with bracelet!
@@EscapementWatch oh wow! I will definitely check it out! Thanks 👍😊
Which is more solid and sturdy
This seiko vs the marimaster 300?
Also what is the thickness of the crystal for this seiko ?
This feels more solid. The crystal I did not take out of the case so I could not measure just the glass. But I image it will be at least 3.5mm thick crystal.
Nice video delivered clearly and professionally.
Thank you kindly!
Dang, that's a hottt watch. 🔥🔥This is where Seiko are at their absolute best.
Yep! House Seiko FLEXING
Please do a review on the SLA057 (Black & Gold) of this
Because there are only 600 units, We might not get one allocation. But we are trying. Stay tuned.
Not my favorite aesthetic but cool you like it. Other Seiko divers I prefer.
The one thing seiko is missing which would make a watch like this demolish the completion. Is if they regulated the movement and make it cosc
Yes they should regulate these! But I'm told it is on purpose to give people a reason to buy Grand Seikos.
Do the lugs appear a bit long? Comparing it to the SPB153 or the SPB239, the SLA055 looks a tad long in the tooth. Comments?
For sure against the Willard and 63mas it has a longer lug to lug distance. But it does curve down better then those two and nicely hugs the wrist.
This looks beautiful. I'm so torn between a number of the marine master models such as the 047J but I read that the strap on it its not great for the price.
yeah the mm300 bracelets aren't great. If you can swing it get this one. The steel is worth it.
Beautiful. I do love my sla021 but that might be the ticket if it came with a bracelet for that amount of cash 💰
Love Seiko, I have a SPB143 on a rubber dive strap, took the bracelet off and it's in the box. Seiko divers are meant to be on rubber.
Yep strongly agree! And I'm a bracelet guy!
Thanks for the video.
Was looking at the SNR045J1 and mm300 at a local AD, but they were too large for my wrist.
Does the SLA wear smaller than the SNR? Also might end up getting a black bay 58 instead because the high end Seiko wear so large.
Yes it wears smaller then the SNR! Check out the SLA065 newest release as well. Video on the channel
@@EscapementWatch Thanks! Will check it out.
There’s a lot to like on this new Seiko but it needs a stainless steel bracelet, made of the same metal as the case.
Beautiful watch and excellent video! Thank you very much!
Many thanks!
This is such a wonderful one! Thank you ft!
I'm simple man, when i see Seiko SLA i click watch and like
Nice watch, but for me it would need a day and date at 3:00, especially for a Seiko over $1000.00.
Hello,
Can please help here, what is the real difference between SLA057J1 and SLA057 ??
Some has the J1 on the tag and other don't.
Thanks a lot
Nothing. All SLA057 are made in the same grand seiko watchmaking studio in Japan.
@@EscapementWatch Thanks a lot! So SLA057J1 & SLA057 are all made in Japan, SLA057 is only for US and international market (manual in English) is that correct?
600 peices combined with both model references?
Appreciate your response.
The date placement is a good choice though I have a watch with same date placement and i only notice it when I’m looking for my date
yes I found that to be true with this. Only notice it when looking.
Another great review! Although I love the looks of this watch, I’m one of those who can’t stand the date on 4:30 😂 I’m sorry… but other then that, it looks great!
Fair enough! Thanks for watching bro!
That case is gorgeous
They need to make a 40mm grand seiko diver
Hand filled brushed finishing WOW!
The dial looks amazing, would've loved this if it was a no date.
same!
The mm200 metal band would fit to SLA055?
Does anyone know the answer?
I believe it does not fit.
@@EscapementWatch oh..no... i hope fit... T..T
The steel is different as well. Ever-brilliant steel is very BRIGHT! mm200 steel has diashield and very dark. It will look off.
@@EscapementWatch i think so. thanks for answer!
Really nice! Thanks for the video! Looks great
Thank you! Cheers!
wonderful watch, right up to the moment you mentioned the price...broke my heart🙂 😞
Sorry!
Gorgeous watch
Hallo Sir,
can you help me?
I am looking for Seiko SARG009 or for Update SARG009 !
Du you now, where can I find this watch?
Greetings from Germany 🙋♂️
Sorry that watch is old now and we do not carry it anymore. It's going to be hard to find your best bet would be maybe eBay?
@@EscapementWatch
Ok Sir,
But do you happen to know whether SEIKO SARG009 will soon find its successor?
I mean, do you know from a trusted source whether a successor to SARG009 will be built soon?
I think very much of your knowledge and your very well-made videos ✌
Chapeau
This is a beautiful watch indeed. Just got the SNR029 last month. I wonder if i have room for this in the collection or they look too similar? 🤔
Very nice! Maybe too similar! But if money no object both! This one I filmed is for sale :P
I like your cap man!
Thanks :Seiko:
Is that a black Sunray dial?
Dark blue fades darker near the edge of the dial
The minute and second hands as well as shield seem longer on this mm200 compared to mm300
@@EscapementWatch Very interesting, thanks for the info, I'll take another look at mine!
A gorgeous diver. I hope seiko start selling movement parts (and crown tubes), otherwise service is going to be Seiko Japan only and extremely expensive.
That would be cool! But if I bought this watch I'd want the GS studio to do the service in about 10 years.
Supposedly rock by 8L55 at this price
How much does it cost?.
Bro! Can you compare SLA051 vs SLA055? I cannot decide which one to go for !! 🙏🏻
Oh God!
What's a good site/place to sell mid tier seikos GTA?
Reddit and Kijiji classifieds
Impressive piece!
Which one do you think is better, this or SLA043?
I like the brushed surface of the SLA 043 better, but this one sits nicer on the wrist with more of a cushion case and balanced feel then the SLA043. It is thicker at 14.1 with the box sapphire and felt like it sat higher than this.
