Again! Your timing is perfect! I bought a 2lb bag of organic potatoes at the store about 2 weeks ago & they have chits well on the way to full fledged sprouts. Thanks again Jeff! I wasn't sure how far down to plant them.🙂
A Huge Thumbs Up Jeff! We planted for the first time last season in a large potato grow bag. I found that easier than in the ground. It was also easier to find the potatoes and to reuse the soil. The rest we planted in one of the raised beds. We have never pre-sprouted for the eyes. We just cut a chunk off with an eye like you did and planted directly into the garden. It works both ways. Explain the difference between determinate and indeterminate potatoes. Maybe some viewers don't know. Makes for a good "Quickie". Take care!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms That would be great because I have no idea what my potatoes are. I bought seed potatoes this year and it doesn't say anywhere if they are determinate or indeterminate. So I imagine that if they are determinate you don't have to keep mounding them.
Perfect timing, I have potatoes from the garden that are now begging to be grown, yet our freezing temperatures here in northern Michigan are laughing at them. So now they can be planted and added to my herbs that I am starting indoors. 😃
Somehow no one has made a potato vid where they don't plant it right in a pot or the ground as opposed to potting it temporarily until frost has cleared THANK YOU FOR THIS - EXACTLY WHAT I WAS SEARCHING FOR LAST WEEK - Bag of potatoes in a rack chitted on their own and I didn't want them to go to waste. Cut eyes off and planted several days ago in huge tub w/organic mix and lit them up and they are growing beautifully - TOO WELL - not leggy but thick stems full of leaves, I imagine with the above ground growth I must wait til the frost date in April - If you could make a vid about care until frost danger clears - growing quickly, flowering early, potential issues; there isn't anything out there about transplanting a start - just direct planting & leaving it alone - Just found your vids - EXTREMELY HELPFUL - THANK YOU! - oh & fyi - these weren't just starts, when I found them they had quite a bit of long growth (another vid issue as everyone plants when chits are tiny & wasn't sure if planting deep would damage them) - I planted them covering most of the growth & they have come through & are filling in, in just these few days - concerned about flowering & attempted underground growth in the tub without enough room as I can't safely plant them out for another 8 weeks.
For sure Colleen. They are basically just tomato plants... Almost identical. I love making starter plants for them because I can get a huge head start on them, or I can delay planting them outside, they plant sugar snap peas for a quick crop, then finally get the potatoes in. It just buys you do much more time!
I tried to chit and plant the other day, but it seems as if I gave her too much love. The tree started out robust, then started curling and limping 😢. Now I feel more confident to try again after your video. Thank you 🙇♀️

I agree with Patricia. I just bought my seed potatoes the other day. I cut them into pieces and I'm waiting for them to dry out some. Then in the soil they go. I can hardly wait🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Agreed. I play with the timing but theres always that dicey period at the end. My greatest hope is they start to yellow by November. Trouble is, the tuber formation period must occur when it is still hot as bejeebus here in SC...and they don't want to make spuds when its hot. Regardless, I LOVE potatoes as plants and do it anyway
Daamn dude I literally just planted potatoes in my garden 2 days ago LOL! I know it's early but I was super eager to get them started! If frost occurs I'm thinking of covering them with something and hopefully they wont die. :D
Jeff … your general videos are greatly enhanced by your garden quickies. I am going through several daily to collect new, as well as confirm existing knowledge. Question please … potato chitting … my “understanding” is that during the life span of the growing season, the bulk of the potato gives food/energy/support to the tubers in creating the newly growing potatoes. However in this video, you slice off only the chitted section and plant it. 1. Is “my understanding”, my “misunderstanding”? 2. Do you dispose the remains of the potato to compost?? 3. What were the results (yield) of this method? Thanks
Yeah, once the shoots on the chitted potatoes grow roots and become actual established plants, they don't need the rotting part of the potato anymore. Sure it'll release SOME nutrients back into the soil, but it's not necessary to get massive potato plants or harvests. T hey don't rely on it past the initial sprouting.
Great timing as someone else already said. I'm planting sprouted Yukon Gold potatoes today as the signs are right. Just curious, do you go by the signs?
Its more about the spacing Michelle....most seed potatoes have multiple sprouts, and each one is a complete plant. Potatoes need at least 2 feet apart, so I'd rather plant them at those intervals to begin with. :-)
