- Potatoes....the world's number one root crop! A backyard favorite and dietary staple in almost every culture. Nothing beats a fresh potato out of your own garden however.
Today, we'll look at everything it takes to grow the humble potato in your very own garden from chitting (sprouting) the potato eyes, planting, watering, hilling, fertilizing, and of course the harvest! This one's a biggie so sit back, relax, and let's talk potatoes!
2022 is the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track!

Why does garlic grow soo quick
Had my first garden Potatoes this year. Baby red, they were something special. It's now mandatory in my garden. For your potato bed, you should find a way to slide your boards in securely and out instead of having to drill and undrill. them. You can also bury a whole stalk and get many more plants.

I seriously love your definitive guides, they answer so many questions! I've got a container of potatoes that I THINK are ready to harvest, but the foliage isn't as "dead" as I think it needs to be, and I'm afraid to pour the pot out!

Thank you so much. I DID plant potatoes this year - but was flying blind. I did hill them though, and so far everything seems to be going well. I was not sure when to harvest - so now I know to let the plants die back first. Also, I remember hearing about NEW POTATOES in my childhood - but really did not know what that term meant. Thanks so much for ALL your videos. SO HELPFUL!!!
That was exactly the same for me! Before I started growing seriously I would always hear about new and "baby" potatoes and I had no idea what they were or when to get them. My grandma used to always have bucket loads of them just before summer. When I really got into growing and figured out the life cycle, that's when the new potatoes vs the storage potatoes timelines started to make more sense! Cheers, thanks for watching! 🙂
My mum grew all our new baby potatoes and parsley. The memory lives on though I'm on the wrong side of 40. I'm hoping SO MUCH that you succeed and make memories to last a lifetime. There is nothing comparable to eating new potatoes from the garden with lashings of butter (vegan for me) and parsley and a cup or 2 of salt. Keep trying even if you fail! There is no failing, only learning! Good luck! 💖

After watching you for the first time, months ago, I now harvested my potatoes. Too early, because of too much rain, preventing them to start rotting. And yes, they taste awesome. Nest batch will be planted for sure.
Last fall (2022) was my first successful potato harvest after many failed attempts throughout the years. Gotta say, when you finally do it right, its so rewarding and definitely the best tasting potatoes ever!

@@gwi8373 The first few times I think I may have picked spots in my yard with not enough sunlight and also possibly planted too deep as well. The potato plants started to grow but never produced anything. I finally found an area that gets at least 8 hours of sun and I put the sprouted side of the potatoes facing up, about 6-8 inches into the ground.
Enough sun is vital for all nightshade plants as well as plenty of food and water.

One thing I'd like to add is potatoes that turn green are still perfectly safe to use as seed potatoes
EXCELLENT point!
You can still eat them. Just cut the green part off. And you would need to eat 100 of them, before you drop dead. It's not that much poison.

Some people are highly sensitive to the toxins in potatoes. I personally break out in hives if I eat green potato.

Uncle Jeff, you should make a video showing how you can build a raised bed planter using "recycled" materials. I would love to see the scenes of how to steal pallets from the backs of grocery stores, and security chasing you out of the parking lot. Then show everyone how to pull the pallets apart, and reassemble the wood back into a planter box.

I did grow some potatoes in 4 five gallon buckets this past Spring harvested beginning of August only one bucket gave good potatoes, did the same thing to all 4. Dont know why that happened, but there were bugs eating all the foliage, the last month. But the ones I harvested were so good we only had about 20 small potatoes but through them in the oven with carrots that night roasted with chicken. I'm doing it again this spring, but now I know not to water so much, and to do extra mulch and soil. Thanks for this very informative video.
20 potatoes from a single bucket is decent though Lynn....imagine if they all produced! That would have been quite the haul!

Potatoes are one of the few crops I've had no trouble with--especially the reds. And, organic potatoes where I live are $6.99/3lb bag, so it's very worth to grow my own.

My local market sells a 10 lb bag of potatoes, for $3.99 United States Dollars. 39 cents a pound.

@@mudpiemudpie785 Just potatoes. I've gone my whole life, as with millions of other people, eating whatever we buy at the store. I am not picky about food. That is a luxury item. I just eat. It is a potato.
Grew potatoes this year in tea chests and in a raised bed made out of old pallets and carpet. Surrounding them with thick black plastic (e.g. scrap compost bags) on the south-facing side can help keep them warm in the spring and autumn, just remember to cover with something white in the summer. Diverting roof drain pipes into water storage containers (repurposed IBC containers) allowed continued watering during the summer drought. Got a fantastic harvest, well worth the effort. Hoping to renew the soil with leaf mold this winter to minimise inputs for cost and environmental reasons.
Self-tapping screws are better than pre-drilling IMHO big labor saving.
What in tar nation is a tea chest??
@@txjellybean3772 It's a large wooden box used to transport tea leaves. About 3ft high by 18in x 18in. Point being, it's a repurposed cargo container. Similar idea to re-using pallets or IBCs in the garden. Think mine originally came from the docks years ago but only recently used it for growing. Maybe things have moved on and they are no longer used.
I like the cut aways while your pulling up the stocks then wala big all same size potatoes come up lol😂

This was good. We used UK based Tony O'Neil's method for this year,s taters Its basically a 15 gallon bucket, 2 taters on the bottom level placed EAST/WEST. facing..then more soil and then another two taters placed NORTH SOTH facing..idea was to use ALL the soil...hopefully fill the space with taters. Hahaha...not happening yet.And the vines grew 4-5 ft tall...good thing we added the trellis!! so far, small yield from the two buckets we harvested at the 85 day mark here in Surrey BC.Too much nitrogen in the mixture too...our fault. The early season vines are still green too. Going to show my husband this video...maybe get him to put the tater boxes back in use. Ours are basically square so maybe cut them in half length wise, So, you said your box was only a foot wide? and you did one row, 12 inches apart, Looks good Jeff.

Tip for any potato muncher: if you can choose between non-washed and washed early crop potatoes, go for the non-washed. They'll be way less chemically prepped, since they'll be naturally less prone to sprouting. Healthier both for you and the environment! :D
Thank you so much! Wish I had seen this earlier. I tend to just do something before I actually know what I am doing. I got some nice potatoes but i look forward to getting a better harvest next year using this information. I grew mine in bags and got about 6 pounds of potatoes.
You're right. I grew up eating home grown potatoes. It's sucks having to get store bought. Same for corn
So true. Countless veggies that just taste soooo much better home grown.
Another thing to mention is to make sure that you harvest EVERY potato or you will be getting potatoes growing in the same spot next spring. I had planted bush beans this spring where I had potatoes growing last year. Must have missed a few. They took over my beans and shaded them enough to kill them.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Exactly! I will do container potatoes outside again next season. I planted corn in the early season for the first time, and it didn't pollenate and turned purple so I ripped them out and tossed them in my compost yard. Can't win them all! haha. I have a ton of seed though so I am going to try again next year, plant tighter rows and hand pollinate them. I have 24 chickens, a compost, and three gardens so why not right? Most things even if I mess them up have a purpose. Have an amazing day! :)

I saved potatoes from last year. I fought potato bugs (all stages) for most of the summer. This year, because they developed resistance, I have so far only found 2 adults and a few larvae on two or three plants. I believe these plants were a couple of store bought potatoes that had sprouted. Not doing that again.😮

Not really Nancy. Once the greenery dies, you can harvest...no need to wait 2 weeks. 🙂

I use 25 gallon grow bags. Roll them down to about 12 inches high. Roll them up as you hill,
Roll them down to gently harvest without disturbing the plants as much.
Instead of straight raised bed potting soil, I use straw multch,and mix in the soil. Think of this like growing in multch that's been enriched with soil.
Another gardener I talked to claimed to grow them on a hay bales. I could not find another reference to that. Soo take that for possible folklore. 😏

They put soil/compost on the cut side of a partially rotted hay bale. Then push in the potatoes. They actually grow quite well.

i'm confused about your tips on how to condition the spuds before storage... you mentioned 'dark and dry conditions' but then said so-and-so temps with *high* humidity' .... ? and for long term storage should you store them with like a layer of paper over the top to keep some humidity around them ? Yes, lots of water and mulch....if they have 40+ days to grow you can easily get another round of fresh fingerlings to harvest!

I grew potatoes over winter, not a great result but about half hadn't frozen to death when the rabbits arrived to eat every carrot, garlic and onion they could find. The potatoes were sampled, discarded and destroyed for no reason except they were near the carrots. Still, I love this channel and you are getting me excited for spring. Love from Australia 💖

Hi Jeff, loved your video, thank you. Can you please share some details re: fertilizer? I am new to growing potatoes and looked at buying some fertilizer...found some High Nitrogen NPK 28-7-14 but also one that is NPK 15-9-20. These numbers don't mean anything to me. Would I need to use the 28-7-14 on the first month and the other one for subsequent months? I'm confused, please shed some light:) Much appreciate it:)

Have try grow grocery bought potatoes after they have sprout. Tried 10x but always withered and die after 2 month. Their leaves are small, not as big as what every videos I saw. Do not know what's happening. 🙏. Few of the potatoes are showing shoots now, will try planting them again in pots.

Throw in some bone meal and some alfalfa meal around the potatoes when planting. Keep soil slightly moist and you'll get nice spuds

Hey jeff can you tell me the perfect temperature for growing potatoes because I think in Pakistan (where I live) potatoes are grown in winters
I believe any potato growing advice should at minimum give a nod to acknowledge methods like Ruth Strout and back to Eden which do not require hilling even if not “covered” in the video . That is what I do and will never go back to hilling. Easier all around from planting through harvest and typically equal or better results.
First time potato garden. Just a small raised bed. Plants are wilting and browning so I'm at the end of the growing season. But through my busy schedule, I realize I didn't fertilize. I'm assuming I should not expect the yield or size I could have gotten. Anything else to watch for?
My potato seed instructions say to plant in spring but spring here has been nothing but rain, rain, rain for a whole month. I dont know if l’ve done a silly thing but put them in pots outside as l got sick of waiting for this weather to clear up. Are they going to rot?
Quick question if my potato has a long stock should I still plant it. I put it in a glass of water and left it in the window and now it's about 9 inches tall.

You can add them whole , as long as they have sprouted well.
Thanks Adelheid! You can plant whole sprouted potatoes, for sure. I like to separate all the sprouts for proper spacing and more plants though.

After cutting the potatoes, should you plant them immediately or let the soft part sit and harden a little before planting?
I like to let the exposed part callous over....but its personal preference.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Ah, I wondered about that. I was taught by my dad that it was important to let them callous over so they didn’t rot. I noticed you left that part out.
Potatoes are an invasive species. You are very likely to miss a few potatoes at harvest. Any potato you leave in the dirt by accident, could sprout, and grow another crop of unwanted potatoes. I don't plant them. I don't water them. For over a decade, I have been battling them and trying to get them out of my yard - 1 meal at a time.
That's why they are perfect for raised beds or containers.....you'll never have that problem! :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Potatoes have returned. As I look around my yard, the plants are popping up everywhere. Another free crop. Unplanned. I didn't have to plant them. This is what happens when you throw a couple of old potatoes out. For over 10 years, I have been getting free potatoes.
