In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Thai Ridgeback that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Hound Dogs
    Weight: 35-75 pounds
    Height: 20-24 inches
Life Expectancy: 12 to 13 years
As the Thai Ridgeback existed in a relatively isolated part of Thailand, it is thought that there was little cross-breeding through the years and many people describe them as a truly ‘pure’ breed. Considering the Thai Ridgeback is a breed that developed long before written records were kept, it is likely we will never know for sure exactly how they came to be.
A multi-purpose dog, the Thai Ridgeback has filled many roles in its time, including that of vermin exterminator, cart puller, boar hunter, and watchdog. Interestingly, it is also claimed that they will detect and fight off cobras and other snakes, protecting their owners from potentially dangerous bites.
A medium-sized, muscular dog, the handsome Thai Ridgeback is a real head-turner. They are devoted to their owner and will be fiercely protective of their family and territory. Intensive training is required to avoid unwanted aggression and to ensure this breed does not develop hostile behaviors when older.
Most Thai Ridgebacks are now companion dogs rather than hunters or guardians. However, they still maintain many of the same instincts for the jobs that they were bred. They are independent, self-sufficient, and fully capable of hunting for their own food. The prey drive is high and they have the intelligence to use it.

I have a 6 month old Thai Ridgeback and he is the most amazing pup!! He is cautious of strangers but once they give him some good pets he loves them. He is very dominant, intelligent, always alert, with sudden bursts of crazy goofy puppy energy

What color is he? I have a 10yo red/brown female shes super intelligent and extremely protective. I was told her parents and all of her siblings were put down due to aggression and that shes the only survivor of her bloodline, but being that there are less than 50 in the US and only 1,000 in Thailand, makes me wonder if theyre related.

Origin of the Thai ridgeback dog in Trat Province, Thailand
The Rhodesian ridgeback originated from the Thai ridgeback. In 1870, Cornelis Van Rooyen, a famous hunter at the time, crossbreed the Thai ridgeback with the Mastiff and Greyhound, after which the breed has evolved over time. eventually became a Rhodesian ridgeback.

It is thought that the RR and the Thai Ridgeback are both related through an ancestor from the island of Phu Quoc, as both breeds share two genetic traits - ridges and the dermoid sinus.

Where did the ridge originate? No one knows for sure, but a plausible theory is that tribes living along the west coast had a lively trade with Asian sea-faring people

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large dog breed bred in the Southern Africa region. Its forebears can be traced to the semi-domesticated ridged hunting and guardian dogs of the Khoikhoi. These were interbred with European dogs by the early colonists of the Cape Colony for assisting in the hunting of lions. Wikipedia

Are the pups full bred? I have a pure bred 10yo red/brown female that I rescued at 1yo from an abusive owner. Theres now less than 50 in the US. I was told that her heirs and all of her siblings were put down due to aggression and Ive been told shes the only survivor, but it would be cool to know if she had any siblings I didnt know about. It’s possible that our Ridgebacks are related

Sight. The nose isn't as good as a lot of dogs. But anything small that moves, they attack.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is partly descended from the southern African indigenous Hottentot Khoi dog, a known ridge-bearing dog. The gene that causes the ridge has been inherited from a common ancestor: "The geographical origin of the ridge present in Ridgeback dogs is still a mystery, thus solid proof has now been provided that the ridge mutation in Ridgeback dogs is identical by descent and the likelihood of parallel mutations occurring in Asia and Africa (Epstein, 1937) can therefore be rejected."[2]
