      Tom Quinn There has been a lot of talk about the greatness of one's thinking mind lately, with the advent and subsequent rise of the controversial psychologist Jordan B Peterson. In light of all this, I think it's also worth to put forth Allan Holdsworth as perhaps the greatest thinking _musical_ mind of our time. I can't for the moment recall a single non-classically educated musician at the time of his death that distinguished themselves as so creatively talented, sincere and different.
      Although Allan was a quiet man who shunned the spotlight and has not left many spoken or written accounts of his own, it is undeniable that a lot of innovative thinking went on in his musical mind. Concepts of harmony and the interaction between voices therein, the rhythm which naturally gravitates together like microorganisms by the force of nature. It is not simply the product of schools of musical compliance. It seems as if if Allan was a student of mathematics, he would not have been given his problems, but let see the answers and from them construed the problems in his own language. A language that most pleasantly bridged the borders between him and his craft.
      Enthused in linguistics and musicology, this something fascinates me greatly. We mature human language convergingly with the intent of aesthetic beauty and simplicity by relevance. Pronouns (a word of itself) such as _him_ and _he_ are shorter than today's dictionary.com highlight _omnishambles,_ because they are simply much more relevant. You can imagine a non-human language where monosyllabic sounds such as _him_ and _he_ meant things like "the process of outwardly oscillating movement" and "a colour of the wavelength median of two other colours", and no concept of pronouns. It is the same as what Americans try to do when abbreviating everything, which the logographic Chinese and Japanese can not. The only proper way to conceptualise things naturally, as is practiced to this day by (probably all of) the world's smartest people, is to unlearn the old conventions and relearn them in the form of a new (mental) language, so that the conceptual domains can be discriminated between. And in doing so isolating that state of mind from the noise of the world in the way it has been communicated, but never facilitated to us from birth.
      In the instructional video with him from '92, he talks about how he approached scales. It immediately becomes apparent that when someone has such an unusual (albeit not entirely new) perspective on how they should be playing their instrument, neither traditional notation nor such methods of thinking or technique will suffice. For all practical purposes, however, Allan's method is perhaps not the best. It happens I doubt myself in this, as one should, whether he should have taught it commercially. Intervallic permutations and resymbolisations provide a very insightful, but narrow way of looking at improvising and composing. It ought to be studied with intent and reinterpreted academically, not only bought for consumption.
      But for his musical contributions, he should be memorialised, despite his wishes of no such thing. It is simply too frightening to think what would happen if he was forgotten and his works and mind with him. Long live the otherworldly alien. As the world moves on, we will never see someone like him again. His labour is our heritage.

    One of my favorite Holdsworth tunes. Whoever thought you could say so much in one guitar solo? Conversely, the theme is so straightforward and simple but has so much melodic, harmonic and emotional weight that it is a more than fitting place to arrive at after such a blazing introduction. Just before the theme is first played, it's like Holdsworth is experiencing "glossolalia" on his guitar, stops himself in mid utterance and sets up the theme with two passionate statements. Then in comes the theme to remind you why you're here.

    Been listening to Allan for over 35 years, this is a fantastic song, I agree the first 3 minutes are of incredible and shocking beauty, thanks for posting. Also very very sad for his passing away, a true master and genius, his chords are so moving to my ears.....tears rolling down.

      BTW does anybody know why this song is entitled Tullio?

    • @ShawnSelders
      @ShawnSelders 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gentullio (Tullio) Campagnolo (26 August 1901 - 3 February 1983) was an Italian racing cyclist and inventor who patented the quick release skewer, as well as founder of the revered bicycle component company Campagnolo.Many of cycling's greatest champions have used Campagnolo components.

    • @ShawnSelders
      @ShawnSelders 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also of interest: The "Tullio" phenomenon; consists of dizziness induced by sound. For example,
      use of one's own voice or a musical instrument. It occurs mainly in four ear
      conditions: perilymph fistula, Meniere's
      syndrome, post fenestration surgery, and vestibulofibrosis. Meniere's syndrome
      is the most common because of its relatively high
      prevalence.

    Allan Holdsworth's music gives me a peace of mind in body and spirit, I feel as if I've died and gone to heaven or a place full of everlasting ecstasy and fulfillment. That's what I love so much about music is being able to develop an incredibly unique technical approach to the guitar that no other human being in mankind ever did. And that's exactly what Holdsworth's intentions came to be, he developed a linear, legato style of playing and sophisticated approach to chord progressions.

    @Brianguitarshred, it is not true that Allan never used .008 strings. He used, as one of the guitars on Hard Hat Area, a Delap Steinberger and played it with La Bella .008 - .038 strings. I bought the guitar from Allan and still own it. I lent it back to him for him to record again and when I came to pick up the guitar, it had .008-.038s on it. I don't doubt he possibly used a variety of string guages, but he definitely used .008s.

    • @ericpaulos8129
      @ericpaulos8129 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Allan also states that he uses .008s on his Steinbergers. He uses heavier string guages for other types of guitars.

      I love .008 gauges, use Thomastik Infeld .008 "power brights" on my 1986 MIJ Fender Strat (w/ Kahler Spyder trem) and it plays and sounds like nothing else. .008s are amazing, the tone, control, effortless of playing at unmatched, especially with the Thomastiks.

      Yes..absolutely true..Allan had a VERY light touch with the action set up as close to parallel to the frets as possible...and when you think of how quickly he he jumps through wildly spread out voicings ...you can realize how difficult it is to hit the chord while worrying about pressing down...!

I got it there and then, but I totally see how anyone could say that its just notes played very fast etc.
