Allan always puts a lot of questions in my head when I listen. Its execution is of a paranormal fluency. I try to imagine how he reasoned when he played. It is an absurd phrasing fluence of a unique technique. It is always surprising and challenging to listen to your work and try to capture how it renders your music. Surely his "clock" worked differently.
My all time favourite Allan Holdsworth album, it's so calming but at times, the soloing can really pack a hell of a punch and make your jaw drop all at once. Unbelievable playing from the man himself and a nice Walt Fowler trumpet solo 5:39
I was just thinking Alan's guitar work and tonality sounds like a saxophone....excellent music, beautiful pacing, all I need is a fine Scotch, a decent cigar and the rest of this album!...and damn...some drummer and trumpet musicianship....
From a friend of Allans. I got to see Gary Novak with Allan and Alan Pasqua at the Catalina the month Tony Williams passed. They were AWESOME. I don't know how in demand GN is now but it seems like he was when he was playing with Allan and Chick. .
Well, after seeing more and more videos of Allan playing with Virgil Donati on the drums, I think it's time for me to reconsider... Virgil, apart from being an amazing drummer in his own right, he is also a great match for Allan (I'm sure Allan feels the same, otherwise they would not continue to tour the world together).
I'm not an economical expert or something, but for someone like Allan it's true that he can't pay top session guys like Colaiuta constantly... only occasionally and on condition that the other guys really want to be a part of his group (that means that music comes first, and money second... and that's the case with all these musicians when they worked with Allan). Apart from that, guys like Gary and Vinnie are difficult to find, because they simply play all the time. Virgil is not that bad btw.
As for the first part, I agree... for Allan's style, Virgil does not seem like the ultimate choice. But anyway, who am I to judge? As for the second part, it's true that age has a role to play in anyone's lives, so Allan couldn't be an exception. I like the fact that he is touring the world more than he used to do in the past decade for example, but I would also like to hear a new album from him soon. "16 Men of Tain" set the bar really high, but it's been 13 years... something fresh wanted.
I'm sure they were (I had the pleasure to see them, too)... Be sure that Gary Novak remains in demand (right now plays with Mike Landau, Scott Kinsey etc. etc.).
Fair point but Vinnie isn't required anyway, he hardly needs the promotion. & I think Donati is a robot. He could have chosen infinitely more interesting drummers to play with Moving on, the music is suffering and it's stale, he's getting on in age and I think rather prone to depression. I haven’t heard anything interesting from him in years , so I'd debate the point that the music comes first. I'll treasure his output thus far but I don't foresee too much interesting transpiring in the future
I wrote an e-mail to Allan on his website and never received any replies... If I find out that this is the case, be sure I will delete every Allan Holdsworth video I have already uploaded.
What, where, how do you know this? Coz he played with Chick Corea? He's done nothing of note lately. In fact, that yellow jackets gig has him watered down. Vinnie. Of course, one world expect to pay top dollar for. But you don't have to pay a princely sum for a good drummer if your agent is working hard for you. Tasty drummers are bloody everywhere but they have to be fished out. Donati. Nah, bad judgment. Allan shouldn't touch prog metal drummers with a ten foot poll.
Adventure, freedom, mystery, beyondness, sincerity, harmony, soulfulness, unconditionalness
This is one of my absolute favourites, just incredibly brilliant. Allan is the proof that God exists...
Like Bach
Man, I've said this to myself so many times. This is the most heavenly, other-worldly music I've ever heard.
Glad I saw him 6 times

Deeply emotional and utterly brilliant. Allan you were on of a kind.
3:44 Definitely the wildest phrase I've ever heard someone play on a guitar. Unbelievable.
Just brilliant and that trumpet solo by Walter Fowler just tops it all off! Perfection for sure.
Best solo I've heard in my life!

Holdsworth is pure class!!!
This is the first of Allan's albums I bought. Awesome stuff!
Gracias Allan por tu genialidad!

5:25 - 5:36 ... Oh my fucking god that thing is so demonic and nightmarish, holy shit.
hjaltiga diminished chord structure i think...
It's also the old area code for Cleckheaton !

By the way, first time I ever listened to Holdsworth....Holy crap!...for lack of a better word....
The difference is that Allan exists not only in your imagination.
very beautiful

@InnerTranquility You're welcome... I noticed there wasn't any upload of this tune on TH-cam, so I thought it was a good idea.
It was a GREAT idea. Thank you for posting.
Ratunku porwali mnie nie jestem Wojtek jestem Grześ jestem wybitnym muzykiem i każą mi tworzyć taką muzykę A potem ją se uwłaszczają.pomo.....

Is there anything happing now that comes close to this?
There wasn’t anything before
I heard Novak was expensive. Although I loved his addition as well as Dave Carpenter(rip) on bass. So was VC on "Secrets" from what I've heard.
nods head approvingly.
Yeah I know he also has played with Robben Ford.
Novak the best fit for Holdsworth. I like Gary Husband at times too.
"...toilet area...", eh ?
Paging Dr. Freud....
Fuck Allan, why did you have to recruit Donati?
Novak where are you?!

He definitely doesn’t play simple basic melodies for kindergarten children 😅
Not Allan's style but an interesting drummer nonetheless.
