My brother shared this video with me! As a disabled 60y/o f, we feel this would be a great first project for me! Thank you so much!!!! I'm excited to start!
I really like this unfortunately for the size of bookshelf I was planning, it was going to be really expensive, 6 - 1x12, 1 - 1x4, and 2 - 1x2. For an almost 8ft tall 7tier shelf, only about 15" wide, (a tall skinny shelf like the IKEA billy). This would be MUCH sturdier, but right now we are on a budget, and might just go with the IKEA shelves, as we would need 2. (Total for 1 shelf was just over $100 in wood alone vs 65 for the IKEA shelf). But I'm saving this video for a future potential build!
@ahsatansrela1633 I think you can make it work either way. However, if you mounted hinges directly to the trim, they will impart a lot of torque on the trim. So, I'd lean towards no trim.
Okay, this got out of hand. My infographic idea turned into full instructions. Then I tried to make it free on Etsy, but the best I could do was $0.01. Anyhow my draft can be found here: www.theolsonoutfit.com/s/Book-Shelf-Guide.pdf Incidentally code BOOKSHELFDRAFT is working on Etsy for a while.
Yes, the spacers do eat up the board feet, but iit's sturdy. You could use a 1x2 cleat, nailed and glued as a support. Then use a single board as a re-usable template to accurately measure the spacing for the cleats.
I know this video was posted quite awhile ago, but I am super Interested in an info graphic. I would love to build a shelf for my boyfriend, but I am like a beginner beginner. It’s been a running joke-whenever I ask him what he wants from me-that he wants me to build him a shelf. He could probably explain all of this to me in a way that my ADHD brain could understand, but I really want to surprise him for our upcoming 4 year anniversary. *I accidentally sent this as a reply to anther comment. ** if it helps he did give me carte blanche of his saw, saw, and saw.

@@TheOlsonOutfit Thank you for this! I need to make some shelving with very specific dimensions and these instructions (and the video) will help a lot.

@@Amberhoneydreamsz that warms my heart to hear this.
Love the simplicity of this! I had been thinking of doing the same thing, but hadn't considered your method for doing the back.
This is amazing, thank you so much. I need to fill a wall with bookshelves, but I have no experience with woodworking.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I am not a woodwork and barely knew how to use a circular saw 5 years go. I made this and it looks great.
Thank you for the kind words. Glad to hear I could help you!
Simple. Thats just what i needed
I made this!! Thank you!!
So glad to hear that! 😀

I love that you threw out the measuring tape❤
So helpful! Anyone know- if adding doors would it still be good to cover the shelf support with trim or just get in the way?

Typos included at no extra charge ;-)
Did you ever make that printable instructions? It would be awesome .
@@zugalo333 I have a rough draft. I'll see if I can get it polished up soon.

I tried using the link and it doesn't work. Thanks for trying anyway.
darn, it seems to not work with TH-cam mobile. Have you tried typing the address into your browser?
Yeah I tried using it on chrome
I didn’t realise that I’d been using CAD for years!
Screws and nails are tools too.
with the cost of wood being what it is, I think I will skip the pieces of wood for spacers.

That's a great. Sadly, I don't know if I have the time to make an infographic right now :-(

Goddamn expensive and material-heavy project.
@rasklaat2 yep. Fast, good, or cheap. You can only have two.
