Coach Mac I love your self reflection. Some things that I have found beneficial are position specific tackling drills (e.g. one-arm tackles for d-line). Some of the best stuff I’ve used are the Kirby Smart “Millennial” Oklahoma drill and Chris Ash’s Four Corner drills. Anything that simulates the game situations are great drills. All the ideas you listed are great fundamentals for Spring and Summer ball, but I would focus like you said on movement based (ball carrier and defender) tackling during Fall camp and in-season. Keep the great stuff coming coach!

I really think the key is working the 5 yard, close, coil, and tackle against perpendicular or parallel agile bags off of a key or read. We use as little jargon as possible except of course referring to leverage and inside out vs outside in fits.
For instance, we'll set up a triangle comprised a tackler (point), two blockers (part way down the slope of each side of the triangle about 2 yards from tackler, two pad holders at the other points of the triangle, and a read at the center of the base of the triangle. The blockers are positioned to force the tackler to either keep inside or outside leverage.
    B
    X X
    T R T
The Agile Bag (a rectangular bag about 1'w x 2'd x 5' h) is held parallel to the ground about waist height. The tackler must get the read (a set or two from the Read), rip past blocker, immediately take down hill steps, gather and with hips and arms under the bag and explode in an accentuated way to build muscle memory. It can also be done with a set of shoulder pads instead of an agile pad. The Agile Bag is held perpendicular to allow for a Hawk style tackle.
This is then progressed to a live ball carrier who holds a shield instead of a ball. Cones are placed at the base of the triangle in which the ball carrier must pivot around.
    B
    X X
    Δ Δ
    BC
The BC can make a cut at the cone either inside or outside at whatever angle. The Tackler's job is to get the initial read, rip past the blocker, take downhill, insideout steps tracking the BC, closing the distance as fast as possible, never losing inside leverage, and deliver a blow to the bag.
We then progress to a dual tackle drill with the same concept but focusing on outside and inside leverage. Two tacklers, one in front of the BC and one behind must force the BC to each other depending on the initial path of the BC. Two blockers both try to base block the tacklers.
I really do feel it is of great importance to be able to work in fits with eyes on read which then works right into a downhill step and finally a dynamic live (but not body on body) gather and explode.
Lastly we'll do a 3 man, Contain (usually a corner), Force, and Inside out drill with two blockers. Usually this is practiced as a bubble from a slot which each player must keep leverage and force the ball to help. There will only be two blockers who are free to choose their targets.
These three drills done every other day in camp has resulted in a vast improvement in our ability to tackle in space. We're also seeing a marked improvement in out ability to deliver shots to the ball carrier when appropriate and more effective solo tackler in space.
Most likely none of this is new to you but I figured I'd share our progression as a proof of concept.
    Always appreciate your uploads.

Great subject to speak on -- your information was well presented, fact based, and extremely relevant to issues that I need to address in order to improve our tackling on special teams. Please consider doing more videos on special teams. Thank you.

great job identifying the "tracking the hip" problem. I love how you didn't just stick with the populat belief of just working on being bigger stronger faster.

Good video thanks for sharing. Respectfully, I suspect there is too much talking/thinking/over complication and not enough pursuit, tackling and simplicity. If you had a game tomorrow or this upcoming friday, what would your players need to learn to be proficient tacklers??? I have used this concept for several years and it has helped to teach first year and poor tacklers to become competent and capable tacklers.

On point coach. Insert some practice video and drills in your videos and walk us through the concepts. Particularly that of buzzing the feet while closing space, while tracking the hips. Saw a wonderful vid of a coach using broomsticks across the back of DBs. Check it out.

The prevalence of the Hawk tackle makes me extremely surprised at the amount of kids who don't wrestle. This is a basic double leg that you do 1000+times in a wrestling season. If you are 6'2" + go play BB, otherwise if you want to be a great football player watch some Jordan Burroughs highlights and get on the mat during the winter

Allow me to offer a cognitive approach. My guess is that the kids aren't focusing on the near hip. They are not thinking anything as they tackle,. Where they should be repeating your cue word over and over, "Near hip, hear hip, hear hip... For HS kids there should only be 1 thing for them to think about. You could have them say, Near hip." in the drills.

Hey coach. Great video. Just that I know we all need to make a buck but the "shout out commercials" were a little frustrating to listen to. A bit of nonsense from a no-nonsense channel. Wish those could be a link on the video instead of time talking. Imho. Thanks coach!!

I disagree. I had no problem listening to a word from a sponsor. It ain't about making a buck. It's about basic economics. Keep it up Coach Mac!
