      Seriously they are babes! Using their platform to talk about this. I went to a religious all girls school, and we had skirts down to the floor, they would lift our skirts up to check we weren’t wearing leggings or joggers underneath, it never occurred to me how gross that was.

      My old high school in the US pretty much had no dress code. There technically was one, but the rules were pretty liberal, and on top of that they were very loosely enforced. And for prom and homecoming the only dress code was that you couldn't wear tennis shoes, sweatpants, and other casual wear, but you could wear any kind of dress or formal wear that you wanted.

    stop using the excuse that women are a “distraction” to the men there and instead do the correct thing and raise the men to see women as more than sexual figures

    So I grew up at this school and all my friends go there. This started as a joke. It was also in adherence to the modesty beliefs within the Catholic Church. It was in no way meant to body shame or anything. No one at the school thought it was a huge deal

      Katie Wollard I don’t go there but I go to a public school near to it and I have a lot of friends going there I honestly don’t find an issue with this especially looking at how most high school girls dress and act today

      Bella I have no problems with the school’s actions but I find huge problem with this video. The way this video portrays the school is very aggressive and while I do agree that we should not penalize women for our bodies but I do think that she should have acknowledged that this is within accordance to our modesty beliefs. Also my friends at DC who have seen this honestly don’t like this video either bc no one at the school took offense to it or thought it should get all this attention

    I'm from the Detroit area and my best friend went to this high school and graduated last year. The boys don't have a dress code at all and the girls are literally dress coded for the smallest things. Like you can't have any type of v neckline and it's ridiculous. They have to send a picture of their prom dresses into a Facebook group to have it approved and disapproved and have no surprise factor for what they're wearing to prom. Can't believe this blew up so much but I'm glad it did.

    • @bigeaststarlight6915
      @bigeaststarlight6915 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      If they had to send in pictures of their dress in advance to ensure it was appropriate then I see no problem with it. The girls can be sure that they won't be given the poncho or that they wasted money on a ticket to a prom that they can't go to because they broke dress code. The school giving literal picture examples of what is & isn't appropriate along with a verification process before the last resort of a shawl - the school did a great job at covering their grounds.

    • @iluvzurara2
      @iluvzurara2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +169

      the issue isn't the poncho. the issue is the policy in the first place. the inequality is beyond ridiculous and the fact that teenage girls' bodies are considered a distraction for boys is the most twisted part of our school systems.

      CrystalDragon211 Well surprise, at a lot of schools guys can literally turn up in low-cut (aka to the point where you can see chest hair even on the guys who don’t have a lot) tank tops in winter but girls get dresscoded if their cleavage is an inch below their collar bone in 110F weather.

    • @lordsauron4292
      @lordsauron4292 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Divine Child student here. Dress code, contrary to the partial truth Kaitlyn typed above, applies to both sexes at our school. You wouldn’t believe the number of times guys (including myself) are called out for: not shaving, wearing out of uniform shoes, jackets, lacking belts, ties, even pants... etc. Also, everyone knows that mens clothing is generally less revealing than that of women’s (esp when comparing tuxedos to dresses). My sister and her friends had absolutely NO problem attending prom this year, and in some cases, wore dresses outside the parameters the school set. If you’re crying “inequality,” you are searching for injustice at the wrong place.

  • @soshiangel90
    @soshiangel90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1230

    I gotta be honest....as much as I love Ladylike Devin was not wearing what the school considered a "modesty poncho" she is literally wearing a plastic rain poncho and those poor people on the streets are getting an exaggerated view of the story. Which actually could serve to harm her point overall. She should have worn one of the "unacceptable dresses" and then asked people if they thought it would inappropriate for a high school girl going to prom. Then, if they said yes, pull out a shawl or CLOTH poncho and ask if they thought the addition was okay, did it help, etc?
    Also - given the school's religious affiliations - not all of these requests are unacceptable.I agree, many of the "unacceptable" dresses were quite nice and totally fine in my eyes. The blue with the small palm-sized cut outs at the hips does not display anything "inappropriate" or "suggestive"

    • @hiddentidesgaming

      As someone who went to a public high school until graduation, my school even had restrictions like this, and then some. We couldn't have any "nude" fabric, but darker girls were an exception to "nude" color fabrics. They wanted girls to wear formal shoes... but most shoes sold that are formal are 6-inch heels or too small or too big to fit your feet. We were critiqued at the door, and if you weren't following the dress code, you got denied access and were not given any refund at all.

    Not really impressed with this video. Might of been better if Devin actually wore a prom dress under the poncho. Also the ponchos the school demonstrates weren’t plastic, so most of the poncho comments were irrelevant. The people interviewed were coached into say yeah people should be able to wear what they want but missed the point of the video. It would of been very interesting if ladylike explored modesty for women v men.

    This is the first Ladylike video I haven’t enjoyed. There are two types of ponchos and the one Devin was wearing was the wrong one. Those are to keep you dry from rain, while the other ones are actual pieces of clothing that have been in some cultures for a long time. The shawls and wraps make more sense to wear over a formal dress, but technically it goes along with their religion and I think there are many other topics Buzzfeed could be making videos about. I’m all about expressing yourself but I don’t think this was the right way to handle this.

    • @laolaapanda3723
      @laolaapanda3723 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I disliked how she kept saying that the wraps and shawls were the same as the poncho.. they aren't... the poncho is hideous and more demeaning whereas the shawls are more suited to the event and the formal wear... that poncho.. the other poncho in the video and the actual things the students were given are all completely different.

      Emily Clancey it’s not actually a rule for Catholics, it’s only the school, the Papacy and the Roman Catholic Church don’t actually have any rules against what can and cannot be exposed so I think they were just try to show that this isn’t something from a religious standpoint, it was more of the school forcing the girls to wear what that school wanted

It would be weird for girls to wear that to prom because if their dress shows cleavage, then you'd *still* be able to see it through the poncho. No wonder why people were like "...what?..." and when people didn't necessarily agree with what she said she goes to her friends/employees

    Okay so I go to this school and my biggest issue isn’t the dress code itself, but rather the way in which the ponchos were presented to us. I have no problem with setting rules on how to dress at private school functions, but don’t draw attention to girls who have broken the dress code by forcing them to wear a poncho that is bright, flashy, and ultimately shames the girl for what she is wearing. I’ve been reading the comments and seen some mixed reactions to this, but please understand that most of the girls at my school don’t have a problem with the dress code itself, but with how it was enforced this year. If you have any questions feel free to ask :)

    • @maramau2485
      @maramau2485 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Lauren Davidson this seemed the weirdest to me, too. not the rules, but the presentation and the “we'll hand it to you with a smile“ had me shaking my head. i think the video could've been better though, as in more accurate about the poncho (why the rain coat) and going in deeper on the problem you just underlined!

      I had a very strict dress code in high school, so I completely understand this. I think this video doesn't explain well how at private schools they generally do have more strict guidelines that the women are made aware of. I know some of my friends have had dresses altered to have slits closed, added fabric, etc. I understand it comes down to sexualizing women's bodies but they're very well informed about the dress code prior to purchasing dresses. Did you have to wear uniforms to school everyday? Because I think that could also be a point of interest. I hope you had a wonderful prom!!

This is why she was not getting the reactions she wanted. And I'm sure there are very creative people out there that can make that poncho very fashionable.

    While I agree that it's a bit much for the school to do, you have to take certain things into account along with how Devin did this.
    1. Devin saying she didn't see any dress codes for the boys either is a lie or she didn't look. It was at the bottom of the regulation page.
    2. The page with all of the "prom dresses" was a pinterest board just called dance dresses. There was a different page with prom dresses that had many more options.
    3. You need to take into account this is a Catholic school. Just like how you showed women wearing hijabs, that is religion based. I personally think it is fine for a Catholic school to ask of you to dress modestly, just like Muslims are asked or become accustomed to dressing modestly.
    4. I don't really like how you said these interviews aren't going where I want them. Those were people's opinions on what you asked. You can't leave and go to work where you know they'll answer how you like. A point of this is to get people's opinion regardless of if they don't agree with yours.
    5. Maybe your interviews didn't work as well because you were using a literal, clear poncho. That's not what they would have been given, so you might have been confusing people because it really wasn't covering anything. You should have used a shawl.
    Of course you can have your own opinions, I just think she purposefully or accidentally left some things out to get her views across more.

    I disliked this video and not because I disagreed with Devin's opinion or in a way to discourage her. This was definitely something that needs to be examined. I disliked it because of Devin's method. She said it herself, she wasn't getting the responses she wanted so she tried to create situations to get those responses. I felt like that kind of approach cheapened the discussion and caused the issue to be lost. This shouldn't have been about outraging people about a school forcing students to dress to a certain standard. It should have been a discussion on why that school (and society on the whole) still has such standards enforced on women. I know buzzfeed isn't the leader in ground breaking social change news, but Devin was clearly passionate about this and is a very intelligent person. She could have done more with this.

      I agree, it’s not the best made video and it feels like they just slapped some ideas on a piece of paper and called it a day. But I can kind of get where she’s coming from. She is saying it’s crazy to wear a poncho (or literally just anything to cover you shoulders) to cover up something all humans have.. shoulders. And for girls with cleavage. You can’t exactly make them disappear out of thin air, it’s part of them. But I think the idea was made in a terrible way resembling that wearing a poncho out on a sunny day is the equivalent of wearing something to cover your shoulders or cleavage at prom, but the problem was that it was so far fetched and made pretty poorly it made it seem like it was more a joke

How would your family? These kids are just normal kids, its not like any of them would choose to go to a gala event in nipple tassels and a thong.... Like... Have some chill. No one is going to dress insane, these are kids who still have innumerable amounts of body insecurities. Literally the only dress code requirement should be "formal dress".

      Anna Schanus I agree that these rules are way too strict and women should not have to be ashamed of their body shape, but you also need to think of all the liabilities that come with school that, more often then not, are run by school boards and voted on by parents. Of course their needs to be rules in place for safety reasons and decency, but most schools right now are rather strict. The dress code that I found was the most balanced for prom is the “one piece bathing suit area must be covered by opaque material” found in Kristin’s video.

    It's a Catholic school. I'm going out on a limb here, but not everybody feels the way you do. It's the same concept of people telling Muslim women they're oppressed when many choose the hijab. If this is a rule they enforce because modesty is for religious purposes, then this is wrong. I'm not even a religious person. The bottom line is different groups of people have different ideals. And you have to respect that. Like it? No. But it's that group's prerogative.

    • @rachels4874

      I understand what you are saying however the Catholic Church doesn’t actually have any rules against what women can and cannot wear. And I live in a very catholic community and school, we all dress like normal teenagers, since we don’t have any modesty guidelines to follow. so I think it was more of a way to point out that a school was telling them what they had to wear, it wasn’t about just the religion.

      yes, but at the same time if the students are truly devout then exposing a little bit of skin (I'm not saying full on cleavage, but more relaxed guidelines) shouldn't be an issue. These kids are just about to graduate, some of them are already 18. Maybe rather than forcing someone what not to wear, maybe they should do a better explanation of why modesty is important to begin w/

      Their school. Their rules. I'm sorry ladies, but the world is a multifaceted place. The real ugly that everyone seems to avoid is that the world doesn't always work your way. Your thoughts and your ways are not the only way. Some are driven by more than the pursuit of personal happiness and pseudo-hedonism (and I do mean pseudo). Progression is not marked by wearing less. It's not about having your tits out at prom. The bigger picture is respecting the wishes and opinions of others no matter how uncomfortable it makes you because the world is not all about you.

    *As much as I love Ladylike, this video was kind of disappointing. I don't think wearing a plastic poncho really got any message across regardless, maybe if you were wearing a prom dress with a wrap that was demonstrated, and also mentioning that it was a CATHOLIC school, then it would have been more effective to get the answers you were looking for, in terms of making a conclusion. Since it is a private catholic school, they are generally a lot more strict of what kids wear. If you choose to attend a private school, then you must abide by the rules. If not, then leave. So that is TO BE expected. Also- I understand self-expression but if you're under the age of 18, you are a CHILD. You can show off whatever you want when you're an actual adult.*

      Also the school isn't handing out plastic rain ponchos. They were talking about scarves, wraps, and shawls which are much more tasteful. Its also fairly easy to have light (but non sheer) fabric sewn in to a dress to make it meet dress code. I know those aren't the most ideal options but it can be done to look natural with the dress.

    from what I understand, the school that did this is a private religious school. if you attend a private school, you need to meet the standards they lay out, for girls and boys, and not just for clothes, but for behavior, language, etc. if you don't want to follow their standards, you should go to public school, like I did. Devon says you don't have a choice, but you DO! Don't got to/support a private school you pay to go to, if don't agree with their rules!
    also, a fabric scarf is A LOT DIFFERENT than a PLASTIC RAIN PONCHO!
    this video stretches the situation so far, that you are actually misrepresenting facts. why instead wouldn't you talk about a public school that sent a girl home for "wearing too little", because that's actually happened and public schools are for everyone.

    In my personal opinion, LadyLike videos have been getting worse in the last few months. This video takes the cake.
    I will say I’m glad this video was posted though. (But probably not for the obvious reason). I’m glad it was posted because of the “I’m not getting the interviews I want” comment. To me this comment blatantly shows how the media skews the information that is shared. She didn’t like the responses she was getting so she changed how and who she was interviewing to get the outcome she desired.
    As someone who battles the public view of a “certain type of person” and this public view is based pretty heavily on information from media sources, I’m glad you left that line in there. It shows that the media is biased and reports the information it does to get views, show only their opinions, make the most money, etc.
    I also find it interesting that you can talk about these girls being unable to wear what they want to prom but I have yet to see a member of LadyLike post a comment of their own... correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that is a rule from BuzzFeed... Isn’t that the same kind of issue for you?
    ... food for thought.

      I do know, from watching past videos of people who have "left Buzzfeed" They can't post on their own videos, but still this is a little much.
      Devin, talk about what the boys have to do too, talk about how there already is a dress code. Talk about how these rules were already in place, BEFORE the prom. That's how high school works AT ANY high school, they post the rules a head of time, easily a month if not more. So the people attending can get and idea on what is expected of them.

    In reference to the short snipit about “modest fashion” in which photos of Muslim women and a video clip of a Buzzfeed video where Muslim girls shop for and alter prom dresses:
    It seems as if ladylike is projecting that it is “ok” for Muslims to have standards for modesty and have a “shared interest” in it, but when a Catholic school has modesty expectations, it is not ok.
    Including that in the video reads a little to funny to me.

    • @LEBeck-ww9yl
      @LEBeck-ww9yl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video is stupid and biased, but the point she was making about the Muslim women altering their prom dresses was that it was their choice to cover up more, or to cover up less. In the case of the Catholic school, the students do not have a choice in the matter. They MUST be covered 100% from knees to chest, with straps, and zero cleavage. However, because it is a private Catholic school all of the student's and their families literally signed up and paid for this. They chose this school, so in a sense they did have the choice to send kids to public school where the dress code might have been more permissive. It would be a different story if it were a public school.

I would personally assert that both Catholic (even broadened to Christian) and Muslim followers are encouraged to subscribe to a modest way of dressing. Whether that is enforced by parents or schools, it’s enforced. That said, it doesn’t make sense to me to project one as acceptable and one as offensive. That is, in my opinion.

      Well there's a difference between "different views" and "apathy" you took what she said completely out of context to prove a misbegotten point. She continued to say "people aren't really personalizing this issue". The people she interviewed didn't have an opposing view, they just didn't care. That's not beneficial to the premise of the video. This video is about whether it is ethically right to force young women to cover their bodies with a modesty poncho/ wrap when the same impositions are not applied to young men. Had the original interviewees held a "for poncho" stance, that would at least be beneficial, instead they didn't really seem to care one way or the other because it didn't affect them. Her issue was not a problem with different viewpoints but a problem with other peoples empathy. So she decided to make it more personal to them to break through that apathy and get an actual viewpoint.

    Ok, I agree people should have a choice and I would agree if it was a public school doing this; but it’s not, it’s a Catholic school, a religion known for enforcing modest clothes just like Islam. So, it’s not fair to support one religion over the other as Catholic schools enforce their religious beliefs into the curriculum. Again, if it was a public school where the separation of church and state exists, then it would be more of an issue.

  • @vibewithjules6118
    @vibewithjules6118 6 ปีที่แล้ว +237

    I usually am one to be mostly all for arguing about some of the ridiculous rules that dress codes sometimes have, but I’m sorry I really disagree with this video.
    I went to school that had similar regulations and had no problem with it. And I was a bit upset that you generalized all of them as “mother of the bride dresses”. I had followed similar rules and gotten a dress and really liked it.
    It’s a Catholic Private school that just wants to encourage modesty. And it’s a private school they can enforce certain dress code rules. Plus they had wraps and shawls on hand. At my previous school they would just have you leave. So I think it’s nice that they provided stuff instead of making them leave.
    Also, the girls are in high school, they mostly aren’t legal adults yet and I don’t think the dress code is that ridiculous. They aren’t asking you to hide your shoulders or legs entirely. (The whole shoulders are scandalous thing does irk me so I’m glad they didn’t do that) They mostly only don’t want girls showing any cleavage or really short dresses, which I think personally, is reasonable. I never believed they were trying to shame us for our bodies. I just thought they wanted us to be modest.
    Also, at my school, boys had regulations as well. Their hair had to be cut appropriately, they had to wear dress shoes, and they had to wear a suit or tux that had nice pants. Etc. I’m sure if a guy, for whatever reason, showed up in weird dress shorts, athletic shoes, or broke a different regulation, they would probably be asked to leave as well.
    Ok rant done. I’m sorry I’m just really irritated right now.

The dress code of a religious school is totally about the administration which absolutely can and should be challenged by the female student body if they chose to do so.

    • @kwalker2146
      @kwalker2146 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get that. People have for sure twisted what the Bible says. I will wholehearted agree with that. However, it does say in the Bible that women should dress MODESTLY. Yes, that has been twisted and used against women for a long time. I'm not saying I agree with it, but if you asked the administration, I pretty sure they would bring up something about the Bible and the beliefs behind it. It's a Catholic school so of course they're going to back their dress code with religion.

    • @titheproven954
      @titheproven954 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sure that the bible is what they would try to use. (heck I went to in summers) But the bible says to dress "modestly" without gold or jewels. Least that is the only reference I can recall. Modest is a form of perception and I do not think for example having your back exposed or cleavage isn't Modest. I just think they should be challenged on it b/c I do no think they have much a religious based leg to stand on. I don't care for dress code in the first place but I really do not care for people using the bible as a reason. It makes me think all the MORE reason to challenge it.

    • @kwalker2146
      @kwalker2146 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I just think this place shouldn't be slandered as hard bc it is a private Catholic school. They're using "religious" reasons for their dress code. It's more irritating to me when public schools do something like this. Public school truly have no reason for enforcing such a strict dress code. At least a private Catholic school has a "reason" whether you agree with their reasoning or not.

      Perhaps but unfortunately you have to press everything hard anymore to get movement. If the females at the school want change and are asking for it, and this is the way to get it done, then that is where I toss my weight.

    I think the reason why males don't have overly onerous dress code stipulations for black tie style events is because a dinner jacket (tuxedo to Americans, and even a lounge suit) covers every part of the male body. The equivalent for women is generally accepted to be a floor length gown. In the UK, for example, most women in the UK will wear a floor length gown with a shawl draped over their shoulders as is required by this particular school.
    I agree that a person should be able to wear what they are comfortable wearing but a black tie dress code, or a dress code mimicking black tie, has certain requirements. A dance will tend to have a black tie dress code so I can't help but feel that a mountain has been made out of a molehill.

    I personally believe that requesting modesty at a school prom is completely fine. I'm sure that in their school handbook they are very similar rules. I think it's completely rational and normal for a school to require modesty in a young public environment. Also this isn't just about young boys and adult teachers being comfortable. It can also make the people around them feel uncomfortable as well. I know personally at my prom there were a lot of things that made me feel very uncomfortable, even as a woman, I was uncomfortable seeing very deep neck lines on women where they were showing a lot of their cleavage, and honestly prom is a formal occasion, where people shouldn't be wearing dresses that are shorter than their knee, it's a formal occasion where you should be wearing a long dress. The mid drift thing can be a little much, depending on how much midriff is showing.

    • @kelpcookies
      @kelpcookies 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, I'm sure that with the rules of their school regarding men's modesty rules still apply as well. If a man was to wear shear clothing, or overly baggy clothing that caused everyone to see their undergarments it probably wouldn't be aloud
      With most men's suits and attire they would wear to prom there really isn't much to have to have rules around, girls outfits are however very versatile. If this was a public dance, there's no reason to have a strict dress code. However this is in a school. It makes sense to have rules. Also it's like they completely disregard the fact that they weren't actually going to put them in swimming Pancho's, they were giving them shells. Which can be very tasteful, but I do understand that that would be very annoying, but they could be just sending people home so

    It's one thing to dress sexy. It's another to dress sexy at 15, 16, 17 or 18. It's just about being modest at a school-related function where some of those dresses with plunging cleavage necklines (for example) aren't school appropriate. They're students; not celebrities. I usually agree with the Ladylike women of adult age (yes, I know 18 is a legal adult) but as a teenager, men and women both should dress like teenagers.It doesn't mean students can't be creative and express themselves but there has to be a limit.

    I just want to say that although it isn’t right to shame girls for wearing what they want, this is a Catholic school and they have the right to enforce their dress code at prom, even though I do think the restrictions are far too in-depth. I live in Michigan and I have friends who go to Divine Child, and I just want to say that the students do follow this dress code regularly. Also, I’ve been told that people are attacking the teacher who created the idea and made the Pinterest board, but she’s actually a very sweet woman and doesn’t deserve what’s coming to her. I understand the upset surrounding it and I don’t think it’s entirely right but I don’t think it should be such a public issue seeing as it is a Catholic school exercising a common dress code.
    Additionally I think it’s also a bit of an unnecessary exaggeration of the issue to wear an actual poncho when interviewing people. It should’ve been more accurate to the ones shown

    I enjoy the odd Ladylike video and love the Ladylike crew but this one really falls short of the mark and just comes across as sensationalist. If someone attends a school that subscribes to Catholic values, there is an understanding that Catholic principles and practices will prevail in teaching and conduct - including ones that pertain to modest attire. If this proves too restrictive for someone's sensibilities, they can always opt out. Having said that, the clothes selected as 'approved' were actually tasteful and age-appropriate. Denigrating the school's selections by labeling them 'Mother of the Bride' is plain rude and frankly, a little 'Mean Girls-esque'. Is that what you'd say to a teenager who actually dressed modestly by choice? Then why say it at all? While it's fine for any woman to dress as she pleases, it's also unfair to bash a school and its teachers for not fitting into a mold of your own creation.

      @@thespecialpotato2854 It's not a ridiculous guideline and even if they are not religion based schools, they still can have dresscodes. It also usually takes account of the environment around the school premises and the culture of the society.
      The school can decide the dresscode to be implemented to their students and it may also he for safety reasons. If people dislike it, they can always choose another school for their children.

      Jenny Pill yes but when you're being controlled and constantly taught as a female that your body is just a sexual object and nothing else, something needs to be said. I honestly think that it's going too far. This is the children of our future and they are constantly shamed. How well do you think that will bode for their futures? It's not about just respecting people's religion and culture - if they want to cover up then fine, but they shouldn't be forced to just because they say that men cannot stop themselves from temptation. If that was so, then why are the men not being taught to resist temptation by their own selves. this video was talking about more than that. How would you feel if people started treating you this way in your own life? How would you feel if people are telling you that you cannot express yourself in your own style and trying to make you conform just like everyone else. Will you be unique? No. No you won't be. If you want to live like that then be my guest. But the point is not to make girls feel as if their bodies are nothing more than objects.

    This is so saddening.
    The CONTEXT of the rule and this school’s reason for this rule has been ignored and this “flaming” approach to tackling the problem of freedom of expression and women feeling beautiful wearing what they want to wear is SO IMMATURE it makes me upset!
    This is a catholic school. They’re based on biblical values which honour modesty! It’s a value in the bible, and once again, just as your argument is based on choice (for women to be able to wear whatever they want) , it was the student’s choice to attend that school as well. When you enrol yourself into an institute that wants to honour certain values, you have to obey the rules that come with the institution! I’m not undermining your argument either. It’s important for women to not be ashamed of their bodies and YES! There should be freedom of choice to wear what we want. But in this context, being upset with the school and trying to advocate for these girls rights (even if they made the choice to be there) is an unfair playing field because you’re not taking the context into consideration.
    They made the choice to be in a school where these things are valued. It’s not fair to the institution at all; and I feel sorry for the school because everyone is jumping on this bandwagon which promotes hatred and lack of understanding or comprehensive thinking and jumping into conclusions. Trying to manipulate the situation to advocate for what you believe is right isn’t the way to go. I love the show, I love this positivity but I can’t stand the disregard you have for respecting the values some people/ institutions hold.

  • @alexandriatan1110

    No hate at all,
    But this is reference to a Catholic school. As a Christian myself, we are taught that our bodies are supposed to be kept holy. That means we should be wearing long pants at least and proper shoes, along with no plunging necklines or croptops. It is almost the same as Muslim women having to cover their bodies and wear a Hijab. It is a CATHOLIC school and just like attending church it is known to be slightly more conservative (no one said to dress unfashionably!! Conservatism is not always unfashionable people!) Also, parents who send their kids to school most likely already dedicated their lives to Christianity, and it IS KNOWN that conservatism (especially in church and schools) should be followed.
    Secondly, on the streets, if you specified it was a Catholic school, most people would understand, just as they understand Muslim girls wear Hijabs.
    Also,
    Christianity does not teach ANYONE that they should be ashamed of the bodies they have, because we are made in the image of God. We are taught to love our bodies and protect it, and save it for our husbands/wives.
    You may want to argue that self-expression should be allowed, be it low necklines or bare backs, and as Devin highlighted that limiting girls to certain clothes will teach girls that it means boys cant control themselves and that we should be the ones to be covering up, but really this statement is only partly justifiable, but it's really the intention behind wearing certain clothes. Do you just like wearing them? Or are you showing off skin to attract boys etc? It's hard to tell the difference, so sticking to what the Bible teaches us is the way to go, and by no means are we forcing any of this on non-believers.
    All love Ladylike! Much respect, but next time just be weary of what info you leave out, and carry out some basic research too. ♥️

      Alexandria Tan as Christian myself I agree with on somethings and not other. I grew up in Christian house hold and at least once a week I would get into a fight with my mom about what I wear most times ending in tears. And to this day I have yet to see what was wrong with my choices most of the time the argument would be about how much of my upper chest could show(not even cleavage), tank tops things lacking covering the back and mid drift. To this day I maintain my virginity keeping myself holy but wear what I want. Which I think is modest. It’s not the faith that they are talking about. It’s the forcing of that decision onto females especially when the same standards are not being put on men. God made in this body he made every characteristic of my personality along with every other human but yet the way he made me is something I need to hide and be ashamed of. I love myself and He loves me. But how for fitting an outfit is is going to put a rift between us? I know that argument defiantly put a rift between my mom and I. He made us he gave of us personal choice but yet we need to be ashamed of his creation to me that doesn’t make sense

    I love ladylike and I thoroughly believe in a woman's right to autonomy and freedom of expression, HOWEVER, I really hated the way this video was framed and presented. This is a private, catholic institution. Though I do believe that there is much that needs to be reevaluated in the Catholic church (being catholic myself), I don't believe that it is fair to talk about the topic in this way under these circumstances. I don't believe there would be this amount of upset from buzzfeed if it were an Islamic or Jewish institution. You enter the setting understanding they carry certain beliefs and that they are shared by the institution as a whole. This would be very different at a public high school. I believe the argument would be significantly better and more valid. I am also annoyed by the misleading representation of the "ponchos". This was honestly done to be more dramatic and shocking. I'm really disappointed in Devin. There are better points to be made when it comes to a woman's right to her body and autonomy.

The school wants to uphold their tradition and values and clearly prom is no different. What position do you expect a private religious school to take? "Let the children dress as sexy and revealing as they want! It's their choice." The parents didn't send their kids to a Catholic school so that they could be sexy at prom, or be in an environment which promotes looking sexy. At my public high school, Im a girl who plays lacrosse. At practice, we are required to wear at least a short sleeve shirt, no tank tops. We have to wear these thick practice jerseys that are opaque and also VERY hot. However, no matter how hot it is, we have to wear our t shirts under the jersey, all because our bra straps are not to be seen! Boys lacrosse is meanwhile wearing no shirts at all and having no problem. It’s absolutely ridiculous how sensitive they are about seeing our sports bras, I mean, I might as well just not wear a bra and then there’s no bra straps to be seen!! There, problem solved.😋
