A lot of heavier metal relies on diminished and octotonic scales, as well as rapid modal interchange between modes with opposite degrees (like the Major 2nd and Minor 3rd in Natural Minor and the Minor 2nd and Major 3rd in Phrygian Dominant). Likewise if you ever look up "The Metallica scale" people will talk about a 10 note scale which is really more like a combination of Aeolian and Locrian. Most metal writers with just a little bit of theory knowledge will just call this stuff "Chromatic," but that's a little misleading if you look at it from a classical perspective because we are often talking about rather large leaps. I find it's very similar to Bartok's concept of "polymodal chromaticism." I like how you are less fixated on chord progressions, because a lot (not all) of metal is focused on playing melodies anywhere in the mode, using pedal point on the root to ground it, like raga or modal jazz. I think your ear is improving for that kind of thing. I recommend War Ensemble from Slayer on this same album. It's significantly faster, but I you really focus on the intervals and their place in the rhythm, you'll see something powerfully expressive, and what it's expressing is very dark.

I remember running to the lounge and telling my dad he has to see this and then telling him I want a guitar and he bought me my first guitar, fast forward to 2008 and my dad bought me a Jeff Hanneman signature. Jeff was the coolest player ever and I still regret selling that guitar.
Slayer are one of my favourite bands of all time so I'm delighted you chose to review that song and that you enjoyed it. It was my first time seeing and hearing the Sleigher version and yes it was fun. I'm going to experiment with that octatonic scale (which I never heard of until now despite listening to that song for decades) on my guitar later.
Back in the day metal musicians and metalheads were considered misfits and pariahs. Crazy how now their music is being studied and recognized as having great creativity and artistic value. To see Doug headbanging to the tune of Seasons: Priceless!!!
First time I heard this song was in 1992 and I was 11 years old, 30 years later this still my #1 Slayer song, and this whole album is a masterpiece from start to finish. I remember listening to this album all day, every day back in the day, great memories.
I started around’90-91 as a teenager. I bought this on a whim, having heard of them after getting into Metallica and Megadeth. It’s still my favorite slayer album.

"Check out the drums y'all! How do you hit 'em like that without falling into 'em?" LOL. Great statement! Because it's Dave Lombardo. He's unique in comparison to other metal drummers. He plays with a groove, plays fast, but with a burst of power that is unlike any other metal drummer.
I've been a subscriber for quite a while now, and I'm always impressed by your perfect pitch. I wish I could hear music that way. I've played guitar for over 35 years and I can tell if a guitar is not 100% in tune, but I don't have your level hearing to pick out intervals like you do. It's a joy to watch. 😊
That was fun! Love seeing you give love to Slayer! And the epic headbanging! You mentioned the tubular bells in the Sleigher song, I hear a whole orchestra/symphony! That was a cool composition🎅 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼!
Alright, that Jordan appearance in Sleigher's version was TOTALLY unexpected 🤣🤣🤣🤣 One of Slayer's more melodic offerings and a great rendition with a bit of light-heartedness; loved it!
i love the way they play around with the intervals in the diads they play in the chorus. Sometimes it's a minor third, sometimes a major third, sometimes it moves in parallel, sometimes it stays put when the bass note moves. It's so wriggly and heavy and disconcerting.
@@Keith_from_LBC no I fully understand great metal bands and what separates bands like megadeth Metallica and even anthrax for that matter is some sort of musical knowledge and theory in their lead playing wich slayer has zerooooooo they hit harmonics and do bar dives and have barely hit a note in key, so I take it your not a musician or you would clearly know this,it fits what their doing and it’s a good thing because if they tried to jam with any other band or different type of musicians they would fail miserably, after 40 years you would think they would try to learn one proper scale lol
@@Hell-Awaits awwww muffin the old your spelling sucks routine when you got butthurt cause your band has no musical knowledge whatsoever, actually I did learn to spell a bit in 40 years unlike slayers inability to learn any music theory or a scale in 40 years lol
Happy to see Slayer making an appearance. Not the most technical of the metals, but I'd say they set an early standard for brutality that still keeps them relevant for me after 35 years of listening. Happier even that you appreciated the listen, and we may get some more in the future. I'd recommend "Disciple" from the album "God Hates Us All" for the Slayer list. Not a classic per se, but it really captures that brutal energy that I go for from them.
Doug, those insane fills that Dave was playing are called quadruplets, two on the hands followed by two on the feet, RH, LH, R-KICK, L-KICK, now rinse and repeat as fast as you possibly can. On a few of those fills Dave starts the fill with the left hand on the snare. KILLER!!!!!!
@@Keith_from_LBC Gene was Slayers Roadie in their early years, then tried out for them when Dave left. John Dette got the gig. Love Genes work with Dark Angel. Got a bit convoluted with Death IMO.

Pretty cool Doug is wearing a Heineken shirt, I wonder if he knows that Jeff Hanemen used the emblem with his last name. Also as far as Dave Lombardo goes, this is his best work with slayer, his best work overall is the first two Grip inc. albums in my opinion. The drums are next level in Grip Inc.
Have only heard a couple songs from Grip Inc, so now I'm curious! Would you rate his drumming with them above his drumming on Testament's The Gathering album?
@ 15:00, "They made it major" because they're taking the main melody of "Troika" from Prokeviev's Lt. Kije Suite and interpolating it (a long with Ukrainian Bell Carol) It's not originally a Christmas song, but Greg Lake borrowed it for his own "I Believe in Father Christmas" single from 1975. Surprised you didn't catch that.
Just when you didn't think Jordan could get any cooler! Awesome song, and like you said instant holiday classic! Will have to pick it up for next holiday season! Obviously, awesome introduction to Slayer, I hope you hear and enjoy many more of their songs!
SitA is so nostalgic for me. Takes me back to the early 90s when the summer evenings never ended and were fragrant, full of mystery and the future held such promise. Love it.
Dave is actually holding back on the drums lol This song was a bit of a departure for slayer, stylistically. The first several albums were very fast, but this album and the one before were slower and less aggressive, but still having the lyrical and musical heaviness of before.
Hey Doug! I've been a big fan for a long time. I appreciate your open minded passion and insight for music, please keep it up! I think you would find something interesting about the band YOB. They're a great doom metal band with uniquely epic songs that can range from super heavy to emotionally touching. I would suggest Beauty in Falling Leaves or Adrift in the Ocean.
I was a punk rock girl in MS and HS, and started getting in to metal around my sophomore year…this was the first metal song I learned on guitar. Guys were impressed that I could bend that low E string at the first fret during the intro 🤣

Dave Lombardo man, such a beast! Also this is definitely one of my top 5 Slayer songs.
Back in the day metal musicians and metalheads were considered misfits and pariahs. Crazy how now their music is being studied and recognized as having great creativity and artistic value. To see Doug headbanging to the tune of Seasons: Priceless!!!
Maybe a mosh pit, and crowd surfing is next 😂
Probably my favorite drummer of any band.
the intro of this masterpiece Is insane...
well Doug, now you're ready for Dead Skin Mask 🤘🏼
First time I heard this song was in 1992 and I was 11 years old, 30 years later this still my #1 Slayer song, and this whole album is a masterpiece from start to finish. I remember listening to this album all day, every day back in the day, great memories.
I started around’90-91 as a teenager. I bought this on a whim, having heard of them after getting into Metallica and Megadeth. It’s still my favorite slayer album.
Doug headbanging in an alternate camera angle, instant like.
DOUG! I love that shirt man!
Doug: does 4 minute explanation of the song's meaning, "this goes deep"
Tom Araya: AS YOU GO INSAAANE GO INSAAAAAAAANE at top of his voice
Just discovered your content, really enjoying it, thank you for taking it “seriously”, keep up the good work!
This is my favourite Slayer song. Love playing this one
When you took your glasses off, I just knew you were about to tear it up lol!!!
I love your videos watching you headbang was a real treat!!!
Try Slayer: Angel of death
That’s there ultimate song!!!
Rock on and cheers 🥂
One of the best metal channel on TH-cam, even if isn't metal at all.
Always a pleasure to watch.
Your videos get me through everything sir! I love watching them all! And always a special treat when it’s a band I love so much! Great response! Amazing as always! I’m just always in a trance when you speak!
Greetings from Portugal!
Stop everything!!! Doug take off the glasses to headbanging to Slayer!!
Hell yeah!!! :D
SLAYEEEEER \m/
"Really tasteful solos"... this is a sentence that you'd NEVER expect to hear about a Slayer song. Awesome review, though!!! Bravo!!!
"How do you hit'em like that without falling into them"! Love that comment 😀 You should do Slayer's 213 next! Thank you Doug! You are the best!
I come here for all reactions! He just knows and loves his music so much!! 🙌🏼
Dave Lobardo es una bestia amigo y lo tenemos entre nosotros !!!!QEPD descanse nuestro querido Jeff !!!!
That was fun! Love seeing you give love to Slayer! And the epic headbanging!
You mentioned the tubular bells in the Sleigher song, I hear a whole orchestra/symphony! That was a cool composition🎅
🤘🏼😎🤘🏼!
the drumming is out of this world. Dave is from another level......
Now Dave's back with Testament
Alright, that Jordan appearance in Sleigher's version was TOTALLY unexpected 🤣🤣🤣🤣 One of Slayer's more melodic offerings and a great rendition with a bit of light-heartedness; loved it!
i love the way they play around with the intervals in the diads they play in the chorus. Sometimes it's a minor third, sometimes a major third, sometimes it moves in parallel, sometimes it stays put when the bass note moves. It's so wriggly and heavy and disconcerting.
I love all eras of Slayer. This is one of the few songs with solos that are almost, dare I say it, melodic.
There solos are horrible they have no clue wat key there in lol
@@billhinsperger8120 What key they’re in? Is this your first time listening to thrash metal or Slayer? You have zero idea what you’re regurgitating.
@@billhinsperger8120 Your spelling is far worse than Slayer solo's.
Dave Lombardo is a monster. No doubt one of the great drummers of all time. This is my favourite Slayer track.
Quite simply one of the finest metal songs of all time.
Lombardo on this song is an absolute beast....... The God of Double Bass🤘🤘
YES YES YES
DOUG IS FINALLY GETTING INTO SLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!
.....
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was fun! I'm looking forward to see more Slayer in here! Greetings from Argentina!😁
Dave Lombardo is the best Thrash Metal drummer ever.
Now he's with Testament.
Close second to Gene Hoglan. The Atomic Clock rules all.
Dale Crover
@@Keith_from_LBC Gene Hoglan is a great drummer but i prefer Dave Lombardos style.
@@Keith_from_LBC Gene was Slayers Roadie in their early years, then tried out for them when Dave left. John Dette got the gig. Love Genes work with Dark Angel. Got a bit convoluted with Death IMO.
Great song off a great album. Love this jam. Cool video too 😎. Oldie but goodie here. This whole album kicks ass. Not one bad song off this great album. A solid fuckin 10. . I saw this album tour twice. Kick ass concert both times. Testament opened up for them. Both bands killed it. . Good memories. Good times. . 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
It's actually a Haken shirt, but the multiple reasons for Doug to wear it in the reaction was the extra cherry on top.
Have only heard a couple songs from Grip Inc, so now I'm curious! Would you rate his drumming with them above his drumming on Testament's The Gathering album?
@ 15:00, "They made it major" because they're taking the main melody of "Troika" from Prokeviev's Lt. Kije Suite and interpolating it (a long with Ukrainian Bell Carol)
It's not originally a Christmas song, but Greg Lake borrowed it for his own "I Believe in Father Christmas" single from 1975.
Love it.
Lombardo's fills are ridiculous. Insane.
This was my first Slayer album and concert. Little did I know I entered at a sweet spot.
What an incredible version of this fu...in amazing classic!
Unlike other 'Classical musician reaction/analysis' videos on You Tube, I get the impression that Doug's a rock fan.
15:49 And the glasses come off-LET'S MOSH 🤘! Woo, *Doug* 😀!
Dave is actually holding back on the drums lol
This song was a bit of a departure for slayer, stylistically.
Glad Doug finally got around to Slayer. I knew Dave's drumming would give him all kinds of feels.
I was a punk rock girl in MS and HS, and started getting in to metal around my sophomore year…this was the first metal song I learned on guitar. Guys were impressed that I could bend that low E string at the first fret during the intro 🤣
Today I relearned about Seasons in Abyss in a completely new light, thank you!
Back in the days, this was my first Slayer Listen, and then the natural path to a Lombardo Admirer
It's impossible not to play air drums to this song. It's actually my favorite drum song of all time
Ahhhhhh a taste of SLAYER 🤘
Death - Without Judgement. for those one who don't listen to metal music it might sounds too heavy and evil but if you look deeper you will see that it's so beautiful and genius, hope you will make a video of this band, thanks!
I love "Postmortem", "Chemical Warfare," "Die By the Sword", "Angel of Death" type tunes best, but this will always be my all-time favorite Slayer song. The drums, dynamics, songwriting, all of it is a perfect song, it covers all the bases.
Dave Lombardo, one of my favorite drummers, ever. Love his playing.
Love the air drumming! It took me back to my teenage years listening to Slayer!
