Unfortunately, it is a common misconception that “South Of Heaven” is Hell. “South of Heaven” is the earth. They are talking about what is happening on the Earth. I love the riffs, the drums and everything else about this song.
@@michaelclements5793 Yes. Once Doug knows the song is about Earth and not Hell then the message becomes very apparent so I minimized my comment for relevance.
Jeff was one of the best songwriters in thrash metal. Nobody could write a creepy, morbid riff like that guy. A major influence for thousands and thousands of guitar players over the years. He died on my birthday, which hit extra hard 😥 Worth mentioning that Tom Araya, in spite of the band's longtime flirtation with Satanic imagery, is a practicing Christian.
They just love horror movies and novels. Thus, they write similar music. Isn't it strange how it is only music where you are considered Satanic for writing such things?
YESSS!! Becky Baldwin on bass!! I saw her this month in his LAST SHOW with Mercyful Fate here in my city: Monterrey México! (with Pantera, Behemoth, Stryper and Judas Priest)!!! :)
Man, how i love the sound of these 80s/90s recordings ....more feeling/power, less polish....love you chanel Doug! Merry Christmas to Y' all, have a peaceful time!!! :)
Not sure if anyone else picked up on this little Easter egg, but Sleigher foreshadowed this song well in advance. Last year's video (Season's Greetings from the Abyss) ends with a signpost pointing to both Lapland and South of Lapland.
I missed a bunch of your videos lately and as I come back I notice you started headbanging. It seems like Metal is waving its magic unto you. Indeed, the lyrics draw a parallel between hell and modern society. How fitting for these days of chaos and distrust.
I was 15 when South of Heaven came out, and it was then that I knew I wanted to be a drummer. I hung up my bass, and wanted to be Dave Lombardo, the most creative metal drummer ever, imho. South of Heaven is supposed to refer to either hell, or a hell on earth, which Doug was right about. With the death of Jeff Hannemen we lost one of the greatest metal writers. There's a reason Slayer has stood the test of time, and South of Heaven is one of their masterpiece albums. Merry Christmas, and a Happy Hanukah to all!!!
being a Slayer fan since the 80's a thank you Mr. doug like you say what a beautiful way to end this 2022 year. I personally wish you and your love ones a very beautiful christmas, keep posting allright Monsieur!!! i look daily for new stuff you post and i truly love and believe you make a difference for many hundreds of people everyday and I respect that :-) Merry christmas Mr.Doug!!! 🙂
Man, I remember the first time I heard "South of Heaven." I was about 9 years old (this was like, 1990), and one of my uncles had copied a whole bunch of his music onto tapes for me to listen to (most of it was originally on vinyl). Naturally, I assumed that what he'd given me was just the height of popularity at the time (uncles are, by definition, cooler than parents), so I'd be rocking out to Slayer and Metallica (he'd given me _Ride the Lightning_ too) in my room, ghettoblaster cranked to the max. Thus it was that I taught myself how to headbang before puberty (not out of any imitation of headbanging I'd seen, just...it's the natural thing to do when you're listening to metal)! It took awhile before I realized that my peers were all listening to New Kids on the Block and MC Hammer...not the latest in thrash metal (I was a bit of a loner-kid so my friends were mostly uncool people who had no idea what was popular...and as it turns out, that was fairly fortunate, otherwise I might have turned out VERY different).
There are a lot of songs about going to the army but probably not a concept album like this. South of Heaven is a story of a young man going to the army to break away from his disrupted family environmental just to find hell at the army and hung himself. It always be a masterpiece in music
Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember an old magazine interview during the nineties, where Tom explained that the song meaning was around the south central area in Los Angeles... The sinnest hell on earth.... Near Huntington Beach... Where Slayer was formed.
That was fun! Merry Christmas Doug and Megan, thank you for all your hard work inspiring us and building this community. Best wishes to all, may you have love, joy and peace.
Haha. I always love your reaction to double kickdrums. Despite you trying to hide how much you hate the sound not to offend anyone, its still written on your face 😆
I admire Slayer for getting this heavy tone without downtuning their guitars that much. Modern metal bands like Slipknot downtuned their guitars 2 whole notes or 7-, 8-String guitars and Slayer only has a half step downtuned. They achieve so brutal tones just with composition.
Before "God Rest Ye Fellow Gentlemen" was "Stop The Cavalry" a christmas song by Jona Lewie. We actually have a lot of christmas songs in the UK that just didn't make it stateside in the same way. "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" by Wizzard, "Merry Xmas Everybody" by Slade, etc.
FANTASTIC SONG OFF A FANTASTIC ALBUM. LOVE THIS JAM. GREAT GUITAR WORK. This whole album kicks ass. A solid fuckin 10. . CRANK IT UP LOUD. HORNS UP 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘 🤘
Okay, you gotta check out some Protest The Hero eventually... I suggest "Mist", the official music video version, absolutely beautiful video and story, fantastic song.
The 2 Slayer songs you have done are awesome, but you need something faster to really appreciate this band. War Ensemble, Angel of Death, Altar of Sacrifice, or the almighty Reign in Blood will give you a fuller experience.
Thanks Doug for some wonderful insights into your thoughts and expressions to the Metal genre over the year. Hope Megan gets you that Double Bass kick drumset for Christmas 🎄 🤣
It's hilarious to me how, many times, metal and that kinda hard stuff is an acquired taste. If you go to the early Doug he's pretty sober and cold about it. Look at him now lmao
The first and second songs merge into each other. The second song is about abortion. I always considered the two songs as one, in two chapters and therefore connected the lyrics. But maybe I'm wrong. Merry Christmas, cheers
OMG that parody was so hilarious, nice comparison, lol ! Merry Xmas to you Doug & to you all ! PS Brilliant idea to include at the end the Mandatory Suicide part, that's a mash up !
I guess South of Heaven was supposed to mean "Under the Heavens" meaning "here down in Earth" ... "Meanwhile here down in Earth"... Seasons in the Abyss is also kind of enigmatic album title... Maybe it could be translated as "spending some time in the abyss"... Maybe a season in a war field, a psyquiatric clinic etc...
Unfortunately, it is a common misconception that “South Of Heaven” is Hell. “South of Heaven” is the earth. They are talking about what is happening on the Earth. I love the riffs, the drums and everything else about this song.
specifically the second coming of christ
Exactly, everyone thinks Slayer is a satanist band, how mistaken they are
дык, великие философы, именно эту идею и продвигали, что жизнь на земле это и есть ад, точнее один из его кругов. 😅
A common misconception is that heaven, hell and earth are separate places.
Dave Lombardo is one of the greats behind a drum kit. His fills still blow my mind.
You should hear Ole Öhman's playing on Storm Of The Light's Bane album. It's incredibly fast, groovy and just mindblowing.
Facts Lombardo \m/
Now he's with Testament
So true!
When they're talking about South of Heaven they're not talking about Hell, they're talking about Earth.
Now that is a interesting thought! And it seems logical, Earth beeing inbetween. thx :-)
We make it the hell for many.
By Earth I assume you meant humanity?
That's what I wanted to say, and it's first here in the comments. The message is that Earth is the hell we've made it.
@@michaelclements5793 Yes. Once Doug knows the song is about Earth and not Hell then the message becomes very apparent so I minimized my comment for relevance.

@@cinejourneys It was a spider and he died because of alcoholism. RIP anyway.
It was also my birthday. Since then, I always have to think of his death on my birthdays😢

Tom is Catholic lol. LONG LIVE JEFF HANNEMAN, THE KING OF THRASH METAL!
Week by week I can't see Doug getting more and more into metal. Love it!
Really enjoy your critique on the lyrics BTW (as well as the music of course!) Keep it up Doug.
Right? Headbanging and air drumming 🤟🏻
SSSSSSLLLLLLLEEEEEIIIIIGGGGGHHHHHEEEEERRRRR!!!! This is such a fun track. Love all the Christmas references throughout.
Brilliant song to finish the year on. Merry Christmas to you Doug and Megan. And to all Daily Doug fans everywhere.

One of the best songname in history. And Lombardo a beast ever
I lived 50 years to see a classical composer headbanging on a Slayer's song.
I love your transformation from your first dabbles with Iron Maiden as a different experience for you, to headbanging to Slayer :D
Cheers!
He's got a long way to go lmao, still hasn't dabbled much into black or death metal
He still hasn't done one of best thrash bands of the 80's - Testament
Not sure if anyone else picked up on this little Easter egg, but Sleigher foreshadowed this song well in advance. Last year's video (Season's Greetings from the Abyss) ends with a signpost pointing to both Lapland and South of Lapland.
Well spotted! 🙂

JOY TO THE WORLD! Another double dosage of slaying/sleighing is upon us. Great vid and the enthusiasm is infectious!

Mary Xmas
Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember an old magazine interview during the nineties, where Tom explained that the song meaning was around the south central area in Los Angeles... The sinnest hell on earth.... Near Huntington Beach... Where Slayer was formed.
The second part isn't South of Heaven anymore btw but Mandatory Suícide, another Slayer song. Awesome reaction as usual, thank you so much!
The drumpart of the beginning of South of heaven is also used in Doom 2 for the music of the Level Dead Simple.
Merry Christmas Doug, thanks for the spirit, and happy new year!
Hej Doug!, Chris from Sweden (Gothenburg) You are a really smart guy. We love you in Sweden.Merry Christmas
That was fun! Merry Christmas Doug and Megan, thank you for all your hard work inspiring us and building this community. Best wishes to all, may you have love, joy and peace.
Thanks for this Doug, absolutely love it! Hope you and Megan have a peaceful Christmas and New Year xx
Brilliant it was! That really put a smile on my face. Thanks for that Doug.
Haha. I always love your reaction to double kickdrums. Despite you trying to hide how much you hate the sound not to offend anyone, its still written on your face 😆
Manowar:"Heart of steel" or "The crown and the ring" (with orchestra or not)
'No presents for Christmas" - king diamond, awesome Christmas song haha
Watching your gradual transformation into a metalhead is the gift that keeps on giving.
Thanks for the wonderful sounds. Have a merry and joyful Christmas Doug.
Perfect drums!!! Nice and loud in the mix too.
Your air drums are awesome Doug! Probably my favorite Slayer album.
@DougHelvering.. BOTS need to FO&D.
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was so demonic it scared me. It was haunting.
Manowar - Crown and the Ring , Heart of Steel , Black wind fire and steel !!!
I love your videos dude! Sometimes you don't like the songs I like but I still love your musical input! 🥰
Jeff Hanneman and Dimebag Darrell RIP, pure legends of the metal world
WAAAAAAARRRRRRR ENSEMBLE!!!!!!!! SSSSLLLLLAAAAAYYYYYEEEEERRRRR!!!!!!!!!
I admire Slayer for getting this heavy tone without downtuning their guitars that much. Modern metal bands like Slipknot downtuned their guitars 2 whole notes or 7-, 8-String guitars and Slayer only has a half step downtuned. They achieve so brutal tones just with composition.
The coolest album due to Tom saving the day and writing most of the material. Love it.
"Hardening arteries" is probably an intentional reference to the last song on the Hell Awaits album.
🤘Happy Holidays to y'all ... Doug and Megan and John!🤘
Merry Christmas and a Happy Hogmanay!!! Hope you, Megan and family have a brill time!!! 😀
Sleigher.... epic!!

Doug is the most classical heavy metal dude of all time.
Yngwie Malmsteen exists...
Okay, you gotta check out some Protest The Hero eventually... I suggest "Mist", the official music video version, absolutely beautiful video and story, fantastic song.
Grandma got run over by a reindeer. Grandpa bought a semi and patiently waited until Santa least expected it.
Love this guy! Doug you are Awsome!!! your real! Ur breakdowns of songs and instruments are on point.

Valhalleluja, by Nanowar Of Steel next!!! Another christmasy metal song, where laughing is guaranteed
It's Earth that is South of Heaven!
SOH was my first love 🥰
See.. headbang comes naturally :))
The fills in this and Seasons of the Abyss. Enough said.
The song is about "Hell on Earth". Quoted directly from Tom Araya
Thanks Doug for some wonderful insights into your thoughts and expressions to the Metal genre over the year. Hope Megan gets you that Double Bass kick drumset for Christmas 🎄 🤣
Happy Christmas Doug to you and Megan hope you have a wonderful time
I love the intro to South of Heaven. Slayer!!!!
Just wow.
Great video. Sorry it took me a month to see it. I have to say, it's been a long time since anyone playing a Rickenbacker bass.
"Wow, Heavy!" indeed....
I didn´t know Sleigher jajajaja thanx!
Hell on earth. As below, so above...here.
Lots of Fun going on here Loved it Doug🧑🎄Happy Christmas
It's hilarious to me how, many times, metal and that kinda hard stuff is an acquired taste. If you go to the early Doug he's pretty sober and cold about it. Look at him now lmao
"Jesus day of womb ejection is nigh...." I bet the real Slayer wish they had written this.
I don't. It really doesn't sound like a Slayer lyric, at all.
There is a reference to Walking in the Air, which is from a Christmas movie but has been covered by Nightwish.
It’s a song about the apocalypse. South of heaven is “earth” .
The first and second songs merge into each other. The second song is about abortion. I always considered the two songs as one, in two chapters and therefore connected the lyrics. But maybe I'm wrong. Merry Christmas, cheers
Looks like Doug didn't get the Snowman reference. It's a classic 80s British Christmas animation featuring the song Walking in the Air. A must see.
OMG that parody was so hilarious, nice comparison, lol ! Merry Xmas to you Doug & to you all ! PS Brilliant idea to include at the end the Mandatory Suicide part, that's a mash up !
Merry Christmas , Happy new year .
Slayer, the best band for beginners to start studying intervals (without being monotonous and boring)
Fkn SLAYER! 🤘
🤟✊🤟✊🤟✊🤟
That’s my bass teacher with the Rickenbacker :)
South of heaven is actually about earth I think
Nice T-Shirt!
Noice. You should react to Mandatory Suicide by Slayer also
React to Possessed - The heretic, I believe that the first riff is 4/3 which makes it sound either good or weird.
Heaven Is up south of heaven is earth
I've always saw South of Heaven as Earth.
Gah! I love Rody Walker's humour. Feel like listening to Protest the Hero just for the fun lyrics!
Earth is what they're singing about in south of heaven...
Its literally "in the hall of the mountain king" by Grieg
You had to be expecting a tritone in a song called "South of Heaven."
Hell...or Florida!
Earth is south of heaven, too. Could be hell on earth, as well?
you should have listened to "Mandatory Suicide" to understand the second part of the song after the tuba....
Slayer rules!!!!!!!!
South of Heaven and Silent Scream is the best 1-2 punch on any of their albums.
Fantastic!!!!
Even the Doug has to head bang to Slayer!!!!!!!!!!! Always miss the continuation to Silent Scream in these reactions :(
