Just made a paddle for an AuSable River Boat and was looking at videos on glassing. Your video was extremely helpful !!! Thank You
Never seen a how to apply fiberglass tutorial before! Pretty awesome technique! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Excellent tutorial on glassing a wooden paddle. Thanks for taking to time to video, edit and produce this video.
Nice series of videos on the SUP paddle. I enjoyed watching them all this evening here in my woodshop while working on a few paddles myself. finishing off some traditional Greenland style kayak paddles this weekend. Next week, will be finshing up a few bent shaft canoe paddles and 2, maybe 3 SUP paddles as well.
Wow very cool, you make it look so easy!! Makes me think it's something I could try myself - these are the best videos on TH-cam
+Kim Stuart-Gregory thank you!
Cool video. I have only used fiberglass once (many, many years ago) and it was some very smelly stuff. The paddle is looking great.
Looks great, I love your new workshop. If I sold my home and put the wife and kids into a rental I too could have a shop like yours. That's fair I reckon.
+One Man Band Woodworking Haha, I don't think that's a good idea! :D
Excellent video, thank you!
Nice tutorial on glassing.
that was very interesting! I enjoyed the video very much, great work!
Thanks mate!
The fiberglass looked like it disappeared, you had said that it leaves a bit of texture. With the epoxy, does it end up smooth, or can one get it to that point?
the first coat will always have the texture, the second and third coats of resin only fill the low spots and you're left with a perfectly smooth product. I will be doing an actual episode on fiberglassing when I build my next wooden surfboard where i will go into all the details like this.
I'll be watching, rock on!
once you have the cloth cut , I suggest with a brush pre wet blade then lay cloth the with brush finish wet out will use less resin or epoxy
thanks for sharing your techniques. :)
Looks great.
+ITS A WOOD THING Thanks!
What a thick arm of the paddle?
Hi. Thanks for this.
I'm thinking of buying some fiberglass whitewater kayak blades, getting them delivered to me in Medellin, Colombia, and then finding some who can create a wooden shaft. Do you see any problems that I might have joining it all together? Basically the shipping on a full kayak paddle is crazy and I don't think I'll be ae to find anyone here that could make a full paddle.
Thanks
ever seen the paddels of hilman sup paddles on youtube ?
an other project maybe
I've been researching fiberglassing the paddle I just built. Most videos say you need to apply the 2nd coat of epoxy when the first coat is still kind of tacky to get good adherence. When you do one side at a time it's not possible to apply the 2nd coat in time. What are your thoughts? Thank you for the great video!!
How heavy is the fibreglass that you are using and what weaving is it?
Cheers
Holger
Nice paddle. You said that it was ready to use but will you apply a UV-resistant varnish first?
+dbmakingstuff I took it out for a spin today and it went great but ill be cleaning it off and applying varnish once it arrives.
estou fazendo uma pá de bamboo? posso usar a msm laminação?
this nice paddle
would you like to use varnish two-component polyurethane or polyurethane automotive
+Guillermo de la pena any marine varnish really, two part is generally more durable.
where do you get your fiberglass from?
What epoxy do you use?
Hey y'all my new website is now live for wooden surfboard and SUP kits, Check it out: www.DIYsurfboardkits.com.au
You should be very careful about sanding epoxy before it has completely cured as the dust will contain highly toxic particles. I never sand epoxy until it has cured for at least a week. Sanding after 24 hours is NOT a good idea.
I bought instruction from WoodPrix and I build it very very cheap.
