All I can say Quadcopter 101 is thankyou.
I do agree with some peoples posts that knowing a bit more about the Drone you are reviewing would be helpful, BUT the reason I subscribe to your channel is because you are an "every day regular guy" like me.
There are plenty of "techno dudes" out there to show the ins and outs of , in this case, the Dji Pahantom. But I tune in because I appreciate someone who makes errors like I do. It makes me feel like I could fly this thing , instead of feeling like something is way beyond me.
If one wants to learn (in detail)how to fly it, they can find numerous tutorials out there. I like to see how it would be if I were flying it. That's what you bring to the table! It's why I , and many others , tune in.
You are refreshingly normal, relatable and unique because of it.
Keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep watching.
    Big thanks!!

Despite what your critics say I like the refreshing way you go about reviewing the P4. You showed you are human and that you want to get the video up for everyone instead of taking forever to learn every nuance. You are basically learning as you go which is what I myself do. thanks.

If you're looking for a good Android Tablet to use with it which doesn't cost "an arm & a leg", look into the NVIdia Shield K1, going for about $200. I use one and MANY guys who fly DJI and use Android do as well. Your review would have been much better had you taken the time to familiarize yourself with the many features prior, via the manual and the numerous online instructional videos which DJI has to teach new users how to use the various options. You can also start/stop video via the left shoulder button on the TX, instead of having to tap on the tablet screen. There were times when it would have been advantageous to adjust the cameras settings in order to give you a better picture while you were flying. That is done with the wheel on the top right of the TX. Though you fly in a relatively flat area, I suggest you set your RTH altitude to about 125-150 feet .. to be sure you don't run into anything. With its obstacle avoidance, if it finds something in the way on RTH, it will fly around or above the obstacle. As Yoda was fond of saying, "You have much to learn, young Jedi" ... so watch some online instructional vids and look over the manual. Yes, there are a lot of buttons and things to look at on the screen, but with a little investment in study and practice, they are all very intuitive. In the options which you can bring up on the laptop (with both craft and TX on), you can turn OFF those warning about flying in temporary restricted areas (but NFZs - no fly zones) will still come up, like if you're within 5 miles of a major airport. I generally record in 1080P60. You need a VERY powerful computer to edit 4K video, and then uploading it takes FOREVER, unless you have a very fast internet connection. You can practice a lot of the camera adjustment things right in your back yard, until you get more familiar with the TX and/or the DJI GO 4 app. Good luck! Cheers! (shoveled about 5 inches of "global warming" out of my 90 foot driveway this morning, so not much going on outside here for the next few days).

I did order the Shield K1. Should be here tomorrow. It seems to be the most economical that will work with this drone. But I also thought it was important to alert people that they will likely need to invest in additional hardware (i.e. a higher end tablet), as only a select few actually work properly with this quadcopter.

I'm a Phantom 4 owner and on the Apple side the iPad Mini 2 was the best low cost option for the Phantom 4. I don't know if the that still holds true for the PH4 Pro. Your going to love the camera on this thing, and the range. Once you get your FPV working correctly. And as Bill said, 1080p at 60FPS is the best setting for most computers and TH-cam uploading. Some advanced Final Cut editors go with 2.7k so that they can crop and edit, and than save it down to 1080p and not loose any quality.

Well, when you get your NVidia, be prepared for some updating. There are several NVidia updates to get, and then there are the Android updates. Mine came with Android 5.1 Lollipop on it, but since then, its updated to "Marshmallow 6.0" and most recently to "7.0 Nougat". So, wait until you get all updates done, THEN download the DJI GO 4 app. Since android optimizes all apps after an android update, if you get all the updates done 1st, with as few apps on the tablet as possible, things will go faster. I also recommend going into SETTINGS, APPS, and turn OFF all irrelevant apps (they come pre-loaded and most aren't necessary). The NVidia Shield K1 also has its own "screen recorder", so you don't have to install a separate app like Mobizen or AZ Screen Recorder. When you fly, put it in "airport mode". You can pre-cache maps of the area you are going to fly in while you are at home, so that they are available out at the field. Store them, then put the tablet in sleep mode until you get to the field .. the maps will still be in cache. Zoom in as much as you can so you have adequate detail. As far as orientation goes, in the corner there is an option to bring up the map of where you are flying, and on it there will be an icon of your UAV, which looks like an arrow. This arrow will leave a trail behind it as you fly. If you get way out there (I generally stay within 1500 feet, but have gone out as far as 3 miles), all you have to do is yaw until the arrow is pointing back at the home point, and follow the trail back ... easy-peasy. I know it seems a bit overwhelming at first, but I'm sure you'll catch on fast. There are a zillion reviews of the Phantom online, which show its operation, and special functions. However, DJI also has instructional videos to show you how to do all those "special functions". One last thing about 4K video. You can shoot in 4K video, to capture the most info, then, use a video converter to convert it to 1080P60 or 1080P30 to work with. You can save the raw file in case you want to do something with it later. Many programs will not even allow you to view 4K video without a lot of jumping/skipping. I've found that if you open the video file with Google Chrome, you will be able to view it fine, even on a mediocre computer. Cheers.

Quadcopter 101 Would be cool if you can shoot us a review on that Nvidia K1 with the Phantom. I've been thinking about it also. I use my phone and a cheap $50 tablet that work okay but... they leave a lot to be desired. I realized you haven't had that quadcopter long, so most of us know you're not that familiar with it. Those of us that have watched and learned from you for a long time, know who you are. We know that you're a good guy, keep up the great work.

I did break down and buy the Phantom 3 Std during Walmart"s Black Friday sale online. I am glad that I listened to you and bought a Syma X5C-1 and practiced on that first. I still haven't mastered the Syma but plan to get back out there this spring on quiet days and learn how to fly it so I am comfortable flying the P3S. Thanks for you videos!

Looking forward to your follow-up flights; way too much to cover in one video for this level of drone. You always do a great job on showing quads of all varieties. One of the main reasons I got hooked on this hobby was watching your enthusiastic and informative vids. You also always stress safe and responsible flying no matter what it is. Great teachers are great learners and great learners are always learning. 100K and counting...

If you use Adobe Premiere (and other packages, but I have found Premiere to be best), you can use "proxies" which are lower resolution versions of the version you use for editing, and then the full resolution version is used on export. You can just leave the proxy creation going overnight, and in the morning you would have no problem editing even 4K video. You can choose whatever proxy format your laptop can handle.

  • @alexrothbard4324

you can use proxies to edit 4k video without slowing your computer. I'm not exactly sure how to use them but I know that basically proxies allow you to convert 4k into a lower resolution like 1080p using a different codec in order to to edit then convert back to 4k after editing; I recommend you look more into it.

Completely understand ! I haven't needed to know much about the Limitations, my x5c is not Required to be registered. But i Did register my x8c, it was free bak then. We had Police and Fire at our house a few days ago for a Gas leak. I asked the Officer (talking in our Kitchen) if there were any Limitations on flying my x5c around our neighborhood. He said No ur fine. Can't Count how many times they would drive by while i was Night flying, One shined his light up on it, then moved on. That was about a Year ago. The next day, another squad car sat at a Stop sign while i was bringing my quad back from about 3 houses down ! He gave me a Smile and a Wave, then continued on. The Officer said one of the Other cops that he works with, was intrested in them. The one that I was talking with said he was going to buy one for his Son. About a Year ago ? I watched a Video on TH-cam where a guy sat by the ocean, and flew out about a Mile or so and circled around a Freighter ! Of course there were no laws in place yet. It may have been 2 yrs ago, don't remember ! There's a guy from Denver, that owns a Mavic pro. He recently made it to the 1,000 subscribers mark. He gave away a Dji prize ( similar to a Selfi stick) On one of his videos, he flew in some park out there, (Nothing posted on the rule board at the Entrance, banning Drones) the Next day a Park Ranger found a way to trace this guy to where he Lived) apparently sat in his driveway then left, came back the Next day, (a considerable distance) and knocked on his door, and gave him a $250.00 ticket ! It was kind of "Bizzare" the guy's name is Nathan Porter ! He shows some Cool videos out there of the Mountains etc., on his Channel ! Which is what got me excited about the Mavic pro. One comment of Several below, stated that a Guy went to some State Park recently, and asked if he could Fly there, and he was told No ! So he went to a Different entrance at the Same Park? And was told it was ok, as Long as he didn't fly over People ! Obviously there are Still Alot of Grey area's abouy flying ! But here in Clinton twp Mi ? No worries ... "So far"

Hi 101 may I ask is this your first Phantom 4 or a Phantom? I think you did rather well.Dont worry about trolls they are everywhere on you tube. Is your tablet 6.0 and above processor. It wont work very well with 4.4 it lags and jitters. I think every review you do is a bang up job. When I first started drones it was you who introduced me to my first syma x5c-1 and it went from there. In fact the video you did and was called even your mother can fly it was my first. Thanks very much for the teaching and how to fly video's it helped a lot with me getting into drone's. If this is your first Phantom tell ya right now you are hooked. lol thanks again 101 for all your help.

If you use a video editor like Power Director 14, and you enable "shadow files", all you have to do is load in your 4K videos and let it sit until each video shows "shadow file created", and you can edit your 4K videos even if your laptop is not powerful. It allows you to edit them and even export them in 4K and badabing, perfection.
Now you throw your 4K video on a jump drive and pop it into a 65" 4K tv and get the popcorn!!!!

  • @locouk

It's a great Prosumer drone, you'll really enjoy it. It'll take a while to learn the status LED codes and really get on top of it, I found that with the Mavic. IMO Dji aren't for the first time flyer, crashes are inevitable and extremely expensive. lol
A good video on your first look and thoughts on it, I look forward to seeing more in future.

I have to agree a better tablet helps, but then so does a sunshade. Had a LG Android tablet which would constantly crash or lose video. Upgraded to IPad Air 2. Also I would suggest a short 12" USB or Lightning available at Amazon. Side obstacle avoidance works in two modes only. Beginner and tripod.

Interesting review. The stability is expected as is the quality of the video DJIs are good at that. They have to be at that price. I'm still not sure I'd want that much of my money to be supported by only 4 motors ;)
Don't worry about the peanut gallery. I'm sure they made a few mistakes when they flew the Phantoms first time up.
Just one question - there appeared to be a high-pitched squeal/whistle from the quad as it flew past on every occasion. Was this audible at the time or is it an artifact from the camera or internet sound recording?

You can use FPV-Video when you have a Virtual Reality Glasses and another app, called Litchi App. There is a FPV mode and you can use it with the googles and a smart phone it. If you are flying this, please let me see the video. Greetings from munich, Matthias

QC 101 Will you be testing the Limits on distance soon ? Saw a Review on the Mavic pro. Apparently is has a distance of something like 4.7 miles with 27 minutes of flight time ! The P 4 pro has been my dream of a Lifetime ! After seeing the Mavic pro in Action? In think it would be the one i would buy ! Although this will Never happen in my Lifetime, I'm happy to At Least be able to fly. I'm Very Curious as to how high the P4pro will go ! Do you favor One over the Other ( P4pro vs Mavic pro) just Curious thx ...

Not in the USA I won't. We're restricted here to line of sight flying by the FAA (got to keep the aircraft within sight so that the pilot can take over control of the quadcopter if needed). That's well beyond line of sight distance. I know that this quad is easily capable of doing such. But really, there are some obvious safety issues when flown in such a way.

My question for you isnt about a dji so i hope this is ok...the camera on my promark gps drone broke so my question is, will it still fly without the camera but still use the gps?

Yes it will. But you will not be able to use the camera, or see/record FPV video.

I watch a lot of your videos which I have enjoyed. I'm new to the hobby and have learned a lot about the hobby from you. I initially started watching you because I bought a DJI Phantom 3 pro and I felt that it would be smart to first learn to fly quads without altitude hold, GPS, and all the other auto features that come with these high end Camera drones. But with all due respect you did this extremely high end camera drone absolutely no justice by doing a review before first understanding even the basic functionality and capabilities that it has. If you are going to review products in this price range as a viewer of yours I expect you to put more effort into understanding them (since if we buy them we will be shelling out a lot of money) This is not a $13.00 - $50.00 disposable quad like many of the other ones you review. I truly don't mean any disrespect but this was horrible.
I will be looking to see if you redo this review when you can do the product some justice. This was not fair to DJI.
    Still a subscriber,
    Mike B

Hey, nothing wrong with your tablet. Change the frequency to Auto detect mode.
If I am not wrong , your Frequency is only at the same Frequency. So the further you go
    The weaker the signals

I use a non linear video editor that allows layered video tracks (one on top the other). It's a free video editor by the way www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor
There's a learning curve, but search TH-cam for tutorials on it.

Reminds me of the good ole days with Mary Jane and dancing and running around half naked hahahahaha Wear it with pride as those days everyone wasn't trying to kill each other and people had respect not like it is today with the world. man I dig those good ole days

There are several military bases and quite a few restricted areas out here in the Mojave that fliers need to be aware and careful of. Although the DJI app does alert you to these locations, it doesn't provide the full details of these restrictions. There are other online apps that will alert you to these areas, but few provide the details needed for flight planning. Some areas are restricted 24/7 (which most apps give you the impression that all are), but others are not. For example, the area I was flying in at this location is only restricted on weekdays. Other areas are only restricted at certain altitudes, well above what I would fly at with my drone (again most apps don't include this information, and give a false indication of restriction). A good source to check for flying within the USA are the sectional aeronautical charts published by the FAA www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/productcatalog/vfrcharts/sectional/ Unfortunately, reading and understanding these charts can be confusing for most people. I'm waiting for the day that someone produces a good reliable app with this information fully incorporated and updated.
