    Neutral definitely DOES let you gain speed when going downhill. It removes the speed limitation of the gearing so its much more noticeable if you're using an off road gearbox. You can get going at some ridiculous speeds in neutral if the hill is steep enough and the truck is heavy enough.

    • @argxz4200
      @argxz4200 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah you lose traction way before you hit any feasible top speed.

    • @ATribeCalledCars
      @ATribeCalledCars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I just find the acceleration is similar or the same. You seem to free-wheel but not necessarily gain speed. Seems inconsistent to me. You can do some crazy speeds on that tarmac slope near the garage in Michigan, but when gunning it. I guess there's some overlap with transmission and torque instead of gears holding back the top speed. Although it gets pretty complicated to separate lol.

      I'm not sure now, but the map with a runway by the garage, if you use a truck with motorway gears and you "drift" the lorry, you can get a lorry to do some stupid speeds. I have some saved footage on my Xboxone but I am unsure as to how to share it.

    One of the most common myths I see again and again is that "putting weight over the rear axle increases traction" , this may be true irl, but it's not the case in Snowrunner. In fact truck weight has nothing to do with traction. There is a stat for "tire weight" and this is the stat besides the known traction rating for mud, dirt & asphalt that is responsible for how much traction your truck gets.
    This is why UOD 2 tires are MUCH worse when it comes to traction than OHD 1, because OHD 1 has a tire weight of 200 while UOD 2 has a tire weight of 100. It's also why Scouts are so horribly slow in mud, because their tire weight is VERY low (50) compared to trucks. It's also the reason why trucks like the CAT 745c or the Azov 42-20 do so well in mud, because they have a whopping 600 tire weight.
    The only thing truck weight and cargo weight does, is digging you deeper into mud, but it does not actually increase traction. This is some backwards ass bullshit, but if you're on PC you can test this yourself, as you can alter all the values necessary to do so in the game files. (which is what I did to find this out)

    • @yoshi5080
      @yoshi5080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This sounds like it makes sense, but I think I have experienced that trucks actually do have better traction sometimes when loaded vs unloaded, especially short trucks that can gain a lot by being pressed into the ground by a semitrailer. Do you know if and how that fits into this tire weight picture?

    • @martinprachar5864

      I have about a dozen video that would prove that yes weight does help with grip..a lot. In fact, after testing them for almost a year now, I plan to make sure I never drive my trucks with an empty flatbed if I dont have to.

    • @SchokoIadenonkel
      @SchokoIadenonkel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Feel free to post one and comment the link here, I doubt that you actually tested traction correctly, because I tested this alot by altering the responding values in the game files and increasing weight never increased traction, altering "tire weight" on the other hand always drastically improved traction.

    • @mindfield8572
      @mindfield8572 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im really confused about this.
      Im exclusively useing UOD2 over OHD1. On trucks you can have 10 UOD2 tyres vs. 6 OHD1 tyres. (4/6x6)
      From my gameplay experience I can handle mud much better with the UOD2 setting vs the OHD1 setting.
      I made no explicit tests, just overall gameplay experience.
      And eg. without a flatbed, the trucks handly much worse than with a flatbed installed. So for me, weight seems to matter.

    That whole neutral gear trick does actually work.
    When I'm about to go down a hill, I switch into neutral and shut the engine off, and then I turn it back on and switch back into the usual gears.
    It allows me to save a bit of fuel without pressing the accelerator.

    I don’t know if I’m just lucky or what, but shortcuts work for me 95% of the time. They are harder, and I’m not sure if they actually save time (I haven’t timed the routes) but they seem to work fine if I don’t have a trailer. Sometimes I push my luck and get stuck between some rocks on a trail that was obviously meant for a scout, but most of the time I can winch left and right and “wiggle” myself free. I’m still relatively new, so I have made some dumb mistakes like trying to take extremely heavy trailers on a short cut because I’m convinced that my truck is an unstoppable beast, and that works out about as good as you can imagine.

  • @MarkNiceyard

    These are great questions that are put to the test. I was hoping you could make a best tips video for more advanced players. There are a ton of tricks that I have learned, only from playing hours and hours of this game. Every, Tips and Tricks, video I have watched seem to focus on basic game mechanics. For example, I use the winch to pull trailers close to a hitch, rather than trying to position the truck close to the trailer. I'm not sure if that's a basic tip or not, but it took me a while before I figured that out. Another tip is when moving large cargo on a flat bed, like the air plane body, if you un-pack the cargo as you move through dense trees it wont' get caught on them.

  • @focussport
    @focussport 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I REALLY wish they would get their physics and realism figured out.
    Sliding out of control at 35mph on dry pavement is just ridiculous. Top speed of 35mph is stupid. Shallow mud slowing you down like it tar is nonsense. Not being able to keep wheel speed up and your engine bogging in mud is polar opposite of what happens in real life. Being able to increase wheel speed and power through mud is impossible, and wheelspeed somehow makes traction disappear?!
    They should be able to develop a model that is stable across multiple traction models.
    As it is, it is super hard for me to get back into it, because most of the missions are such a boring slog its not very rewarding to accomplish them, and the insane on road physics just make me wonder who the hell thinks that trucks act that way at all. Highway maps are completely useless and as far from realistic you can get. These trucks, especially OTR style semis, should be able to go 90mph rock solid stable, and also realistically drive slowly.
    I had a lot more fun with mudrunner and the use of logging equipment, while snowrunner is just a LOT of boring driving through unrealistically muddy environments in trucks that don't deal with it like they should.
    Can't wait until they, or someone else, figures it all out.

    4:08 In Snowrunner one Word comes to mind regarding the Map Designer: Malicious Intent! There are so many places on the map where careless driving will WASTE YOUR TIME!. And many (obvious) Shortcuts are frigging traps... The Map is filled with Tree's or stones (hate the black ones) placed with malicious intent with precision on that spot, to wreck the truck coming by. Snowrunner for me is the 1st Metroidvania Driving Game. Get Stuck? Come back with a new Key Item found in another Map (aka Upgrade or unlocked Truck) with this in mind i began to enjoy SR. I have went down a hill in neutral and it has only used as much fuel as in idle. When in gear you still have to accelerate just to keep moving or else it will gear down and stop. I feel like that is a true statement. Now being in high gear while going down a hill will use less fuel than being in auto and still keep you going at the same speed as its designed for without losing control bc... you know... snowrunne's poor tarmac physics.

    Something I would be interested in seeing is related to trucks towing other trucks via winch. It seems that when you do this your speed is capped at a certain point even if the truck doing the pulling is more than powerful enough to go faster. Is this speed consistent? Does it change when the truck being towed has the engine on or has it off and is sitting in neutral?

    • @ATribeCalledCars
      @ATribeCalledCars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting questions. The engine on/off option is quite new, used to be that you lugged a truck round at one speed only. I did notice engine on sped things up, presumably at the expense of fuel being used by the towed truck. It does feel as if there is a speed cap but I've never really tested it!

    There is only 1 exception I can think of to the "II = best in mud" rule, and that is with the OHD set of offroad tires. The UOD Offroads follow the rule, UOD II is easily the best UOD tire. But OHD don't.
    While I'm sure the OHD II has the mud grip bonus, the OHD I has a default mud value of 1.9 compared to OHD II 1.5. I just can't see the OHD II's mud bonus being enough to overcome the OHD I base values seeing the OHD I has a .4 advantage over the OHD II.
    Other then OHD you are right though, with every other tire the ones marked with II should be the best on mud. The OHD are just the outlier.

    The neutral idea is absolute bullshit,about the tires i don't know because it depends on the truck you use.
    The last one is simple,if you take a shortcut make sure it has no rivers,deep mud,deep snow,deep swamps or terrain that might flip your truck,use the road instead and avoid irregular terrain as much as you can because AWD and diff lock makes the truck spend more fuel and can get it stuck or flip even if you have Tayga or Azov.
