  • Penguin editors attest that they can tell from the very first page whether a manuscript has potential, or whether it's dead in the water. How? And what are they looking for?
Bestselling business author and international speaker Douglas Kruger, who has published seven books with Penguin Random House SA, lets you in on their secrets. Make sure that your manuscript submission gets the fighting chance it deserves.
Meet Douglas Kruger at www.douglaskruger.com. Book him as the keynote speaker for your next conference or event.

I'm currently trying to write a Sci-Fi novel ... and this advice still seems to apply very well to fiction writing. At least hope so ...!

I made the mistake of sending the entire book to publishers ... This helps with the second book that I am writing ...

Thanks Douglas. I just embarked on writing my first book. It concerns innovation and the patent system. Using your advice about stories and metaphor have made my writing buzz.

@@sparkles999rose2 yes. Been back and forth to my publishers. Tweaking mostly. A big problem with my earlier drafts. Too much dense info. I needed to parse it down. Covid didn’t help.

@@philipswain4122 that’s great, how did you get a publisher?

@@sparkles999rose2 I shopped a summary to a number of legal publishers. Two expressed an interest and contacted me pretty quickly as they were looking for someone at the time. Just good luck and timing I suppose.

Book suggestions were great - how about suggestions on writing articles?

Beware of the publisher's or agent's requirements on their website. They'll tell you your query wasn't what they wanted to see even if you did it down to the letter the way they wanted. In other words, they are full of shit just like everyone else so don't let it bug you too much.

I agree, they are effectively censoring and dumbing down creativity. They may well know their business models but they don't want you to be "Too original" Effectively killing off artists & dreamers, what a dull world they are creating!
