Saw The Manfreds last night in London. An utterly brilliant concert featuring Paul Jones, Mike d'Abo and Tom McGuiness. They played all of the 60s hits, plus some famous d'Abo compositions plus the McGuiness Flint hits. They've still got it!! The music just flows out of them.
In 1978, they released "Watch". Side one is the best collection of songs recorded on one side of an album in RnR history IMO. Amazing melodies, lyrics and vocals (Chris Thompson) , incredible musicianship, the guitar (Dave Flett),and synth solos are out of this world. There! I said it!
Wrong Manfred Mann. You're talking about Manfred Mann's Eath Band. Manfred Mann were a 60's group, originally with Paul Jones singing and was replaced by Mike D'Abo in '66. Mike is the Father of Olivia D'Abo and cousin of Maryam D'Abo. They now perform as The Manfreds and they put on one of the best shows I have seen with Paul and Mike singing. The lineup included Mike McGuiness, Hughie Flint and Benny Gallagher and Mike Hugg. Mike, Hughie and Benny were in McGuiness Flint with Graham Gallagher. We got to hear all the great songs From MM mark1 and mark 2 along with songs from McGuiness Flint.
I love Manfred Mann and every version of his bands from the early day's until now, but I'm kind of confused by the narrator in this video referring to them as a trio when almost every line-up was a 5 piece band! I still enjoyed seeing this and I'm happy to hear Manfred Mann is still playing.
Manfred Mann was great and Manfred Manns Earth Band are still great. One of my favourite groups. Very overlooked. Mick Rogers is an excellent guitarist
I remember hearing Mighty Quinn when I went to my first parties when i was 12 years old back in 1968 in Argentina. Now I'm Denmark in 2022 I'm going to their concert tomorrow in my hometown Esbjerg. Looking forward to that!
Well being a Springsteen fan back in 70's, I'd say blinded by the light my favorite. Their version with all the instrumentals far outweighed Springsteen's original version too! Still enjoy listening often to Manfred's Blinded By The Light in 2022.
I agree completely. Another Springsteen song where they did the same thing was For You. Springsteen 1970’s “fantasy” lyrics with a great singer and musical arrangement blows away Bruce’s own rather lacklustre performances.

Oh I loved them! In 1975 or 76 I saw them live while living in Los Angeles at a small intimate club. Robert Fripp sat in on guitar. He insisted in playing in the dark. The band did not disappoint.
They were progressive sounding in the late 70s. Nightingale and Bombers. And also Solar Fire. When Roaring Silence came out Manfred Mann gained new audience. They had tried doing a Bruce Springsteen song before Blinded by the Light. But it still gets heavy Radio play.
No piece on The Earth Band is complete without mentioning their best rocking album by far….Nightingales and Bombers! Just a kickass album! Someone mentioned The Roaring Silence as one of the most underrated album of the seventies? I loved that album and rated it one of the seventies best but the real underrated one was Nightingales and Bombers!
Most 1960s pop fans didn't realize that the name was actually the band leader. It just sounded right as the Beatles sounded right. It wasn't until the 70s that I realised his Earth Band that it was a person's name. Duh! I saw the band in the 90s without Mr Mann as the Manfreds, it had both Paul Jones & Mike D'abo & guests Chris Farlowe, Colin Bluestone & Alan Price. Best value & amazing 60s concert ever & all for a tenner.
I love the album SOLAR FIRE. Manfred Mann and the Earth band.really stepped up in the jams on this tape. Kind of psychedelic and rock blended together.
I saw them in '64 at the Chelmsford Odeon on a Joe Brown tour. They backed The Crystals as well as playing their own set (which included 5-4-3-2-1). Heady days...
I was being wheeled down to theatre to have my tonsils out in 1970 when the hospital radio started playing " When I'm dead and gone" by McGuinness-Flint. I've seen them a few times at Gawsworth Hall, Cheshire just before the lockdowns with Paul Jones, Mike D'Abo Tom McGuiness and Hughie Flint. Sensational.

A friend had a demo single side LP of Roaring Silence. Listening to it still brings back so many memories of the 70s. There were so many fantastic groups at that time.

The Manfred's, fronted by Paul Jones, Mike d'abo and Tom Mc Guinness played to a packed out audience at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall last week, their vocals were superb. They were given a standing ovation, and for me, great memories of the magical 1960s
I saw them play as The Manfreds about 10 years ago with both Paul Jones and Mike D’Abo. They were really good and sounded just like they did in the old days.
I also saw them when they toured the club circuit in Australia, probably early 2000's. Great show, the crowd loved them and the band was having a great time also. Did their hits and also songs from their individual projects. Worth the admission to listen to Paul Jones play harmonica. I have great memories of the group when my older cousins would buy the singles and play them all day when I was at their house for holidays. One song was Do Wah Diddy Diddy, which I still know all the words to.
I’m 57 now, but saw Manfred Mann for the first time last Friday. What a fantastic performance, the cat is 82 now! Great band and Robert Hart does a very good job on lead vocals. Still my all time favourite is Ha Ha Said The Clown! And still intrigued by the engine sound right before the chorus. Does anyone know exactly what this sound is? Is it a motor cycle or is it from a sound effects album? Anyone?
For those who love Manfred Mann locate their As Is album. It never came out in the USA, but is the best album they released. It has the hooky material of their early days with some progressive work that was part of their later material. Klaus Voorman had just joined them and the were milking the Revolver angle in the liner notes. "Box Office Draw" and "Love Can Be A Now and Then Thing" are great originals plus it has "Just Like A Woman" (a European hit) and "Autumn Leaves).
You really blew over the Earthband albums which were all brilliant. Example Glorified Magnified, Solar Fire and Nightingales and Bombers…. Please can you do a background on those?
Manfred used to have a place in Fort Garland CO and had a recording studio in his basement. Used to see him around at the local coffee shop and antique store. A local Hal had a recording of Manfred playing blues on the electric guitar in his studio and was some amazing stuff.
I was early intrigued by Manfred's jazz-influenced side. "Bare Hugg" from the 2nd album impressed me a lot, especially the mono mixing (that differs from the stereo version).
Manfred Mann were one of my favourite bands growing up in the 1960s and on into the 70s as Earth Band . I’ve a stunning live version of Blinded By The Light with great participation of the Audience. I’m not sure if you mentioned another hit, Davy’s On the Road Again.
Nary a mention of Watch or Chance, 2 superb albums from later on. 'Lies (Through The 80s)' & 'Martha's Madman' are particular favorites of mine. The Roaring Silence is however, one of the best albums I have ever heard.

I had the 45 of Blinded by the Light. The b-side was this prog thing based on The Firebird Suite called Starbird. A capella opening with dueling guitar/guitar synth (I think) solos, an operatic synthy ending, all done in kickass 5/4. As we used to say back when it came out, wicked
You might also mention that. Paul Jones and McGuinness fronted a band....... simply titled Official Blues Band Bootleg Album. They were Jones/McGuinness/Dave Kelly & Gary Fletcher + Hughie Flint from John Mayall's original Blues breaker's.The band issued only 2 or 3 album's. The one l mentioned is an album worth checking out if you have a liking for '80's blues with up tempo feel with a Brit. touch. Cheers!

A tribute to Chris Thompson, I think, who fronted the band for, in my opinion, their best music. Had no idea that Jack Bruce was in the band. I’d consider this era of Earth Band prog. No mention of Manns use and innovation of the synthesizer, which took their sound in a whole new direction.

Why no mention of Mike d’Abo who formed Mike d’Abo and his Mighty Quintet. Still performing today. Oh, and with Paul Jones , Mike Hugg etc. with The Manfreds. Paul Jones is also a member of The Blues Band together with Tom McGuinnes and Dave Kelly.

Watch is one of my 10 top lps. Its pure classic rock. Alot of gre a's t jams on it too.

Manfred Mann Chapter Three albums are incredible. Somewhat leftfield but very creative and I still play them to this day.

Not sure why their 1980 album Chance is completely ignored here. Their Springstein cover "For You" rocked the charts pretty hard.

My favorite was a Springsteen cover of For You. Not exactly sure why but it was a very emotional song for me.

Manfred's real name is Mike Lubowitz. There were already 2 Mikes in the band.
They started as a Quintet then became a Quartet then a Trio and then a Duo and then Manfred went solo.............5,4,3,2,1..

Strange....Chance is my favorite album as I was a teen when it came out. Yet it is not mentioned here. Still have it to this day and know every song.
From the Roaring Silence to Chance there were just amazing albums. Its like the narrator got a stroke and forgot the latter half...

I just love their Chapter 3 era. Only discovered those lps a few ysars ago. Had solar fire sonce i was a teenager but thought their early stuff was all pip so never explored them at the time.
The only top-line sixties group all of whose members are still alive (I don't regard Jack Bruce as more than a temporary fill-in).
My favourite Manfred Mann record was "Davey's on the Road Again.
