Not necessarily. It gave me a bit more confidence to drive some roads, and to know the Jeep already had a few dings and scrapes, but overall 2WD should suffice. Having good clearance is probably the main recommendation I'd have for a (rental) car.

Some beaches aren't as pretty anymore, too. However, we loved having the book guide us to locations we would never have been brave enough to try without it. Rent an old 4x4 and get exploring. Best fun ever, and you never know what gems you'll come across. Eleuthera is simply paradise and the people there are lovely.
