"Wakacia", lol. Well, your not the only one to butcher Waukesha, lol. Who would have thought that after all these years I would end up in Waukesha. Originally from upstate NY, work would bring me to Waukesha. But that's a whole other story. I've always been a Cheap Trick fan but what really got ne hooked on Cheap Trick was his connections to Hamer Guitars and Paul Hamer.
Yeah, jack douglas, the man who discovered them butchered it as well.. thats where i heard it pronounced. In his interviews. I also realize people that do no traveling have no idea what people that do travel encounter from city to ciry that pronounce their names differently than others. I always challenge the people that mock me, go to paris or budapest and pronounce their city and street names, and watch people look strangely at you. Such a sill thing to get upset about when ive beem to three different cities in the u.s.a. called Piqua that all pronounce their town name a different way
I live in Rockford, IL. Born and raised here. We run into Rick all the time. Once when my (then) 3 y/o son and I were walking through a coffee house, he noticed Rick (who was sitting there drinking coffee - he was wearing zebra print skin tight pants). My son shouted “Look mommy! A zebra!” And that just tickled Rick. He stood up and high fived him and said that’s right little dude! And he gave him an autographed guitar pick. He carries those around with him and gives the, out a lot. He’s a wonderful man, and gives back so much to the Rockford Community.
Steve Miller was born in Milwaukee. Steve Miller’s godfather was Les Paul who was born in Waukesha. Both Cheap Trick & Steve Miller were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
Great tribute to the leader of perhaps the greatest American Rock and Roll band and their roots. Midwestern values, and hard work, pays off in the end. Drummer Bun E Carlos recently uploaded a rehearsal the band played in the Nelsen Music store on his basement Bootlegs Page.
This was another great episode. Thank you so much Katie and Jordan, not only for all the work that went into this tremendous production - but for all the driving you did to capture that final location.
Too cool. Back to back Cheap Trick videos. I've seen Cheap Trick in Springfield, Champaign and my hometown Decatur, Illinois. Thanks again for sharing.
I saw Cheap Trick play many times at Country Music Inn in Mundelein Illinois in the early 70s. This was before they became well known and successful. The guy with the baseball cap and all the extra spare picks on his guitar is an image that has stuck with me all these years. Im 71 now.
I worked as a pin chaser at Sunset Bowl in 1985. What is now the game room was a big hall with a 2nd bar and dedicated stage on one end. Bands were there almost every weekend. They have added on since then, the ProShop that is out front was not there in the 80's.
I used to skate board with his son miles who also is a really great Musician like father like son,, He has a band called the Rusted. Hearts , awesome band to see and hear,,Thanks so much for coming to Rockford Illinois Jordan the Lion❤
I lived in Rockford from '88 to '91 (9th - 11th grade) and remember seeing Rick when I was at the Beef-A-Roo skipping school lunch with my friends and he shook all of our hands and said "ooh, you guys being bad skipping school? I won't tell").
Thanks Jordan. All your streams include so much history. Appreciate your diligence in gathering info on people of interest. Awesome when you include beautiful Katie.🩵🩵🩵
Awesome video! I ran into him last year and mentioned that my dad would talk about how Rick parked in his yard for a 5k race during a small town festival. He joked that he won because everyone ran the wrong way besides him. Few minutes later he came back over to our table and shows us a photo of him at the race.😊 Also... it's wah, kah, shaw, wi
True story,it's 1973 and I'm 18. My buds and I got to Wisconsin drinking every weekend. There was a bar on every corner in Kenosha then. American motors was there. So we go to this bar and bouncer said $1.00 cover charge so we gripped for what? He says dome band from Rockford was playing there that night. We said ok and it was Cheap Trick! They were great
Saw Cheap Trick for the first time as a 15-year-old in 1977 and I'll be seeing them next month in Indiana. That's about 100-something times as a now 62-year-old.
I graduated from Waukesha South in 76 about a mile away from Sunset Bowl. They often booked great bands. Between the bowling and music, we spent a lot of time there.
I have lived in Waukesha all my life. I never saw them play at the sunset bowl but heard my story’s of people that saw them. They did play in the game room that at the time was a hall that you could rent for weddings. But some weekends they did have live music and charged a cover. Lots of the Midwest groups of the 70’s played there like cheap trick, REO Speedwagon, Sticks. The story I heard about CT is that Rick threw his guitar through the ceiling.
Most likely the bar that you had seen them in located in Kenosha was Sammy G’s Circus. They frequently played there a lot in the 1973 - 1975 era. Sometimes played there 4 nights in a row. American screenwriter, film producer Christopher Crowe used to watch the band perform there. He later created their world famous band logo. They also played at the Brat Stop located by I-94 Kenosha many, many times also.
Love seeing the buildings from their history! Huge fan since 77 and currently playing in a CT tribute band 😁 Hoping to get out to Rockford some day for a visit and maybe even playing in the casino!
My band played several times at Snoopys Supper Club in Rockford on Main St. back in 73-74. Who knew Rick was playing right down the street. We were out of Cleveland, OH. and toured all around WI., IL, MI., IN., Iowa. How cool. Nice memories.
Absolutely LOVE Cheap Trick! Enjoy ALL your videos, Jordan. Had the pleasure to see Cheap Trick open for Def Leppard Irvine Meadows,Cali. Been a fan longtime! Take care & Enjoy! 👍💓🙏✌️
I grew up in Rockford. I came back here, for now. Rick Nielsen and I, shop at the same grocery store. We were both checking-out, at the same checkout, at the same time. Funny Stuff
I grew up in Rochelle Illinois, South of Rockford 30 miles. I saw Cheap Trick in 72 in a small bar downtown Rockford, there were maybe 40 people there. On a side note, my Mom owned a duplex right behind a apartment building the members owned in Rochelle. Mom met them several times! True story brother.
Saw these guys with Eddie Money back in '89....was my first show. I remember the guitar that looked like Rick. He was basically playing himself.......too cool.
22:15 Sunset bowl bar used to be called Sporties and was our 1st night out when my wife and I met!!! Cool to see you two record from there. Best, David
Wow Jordan you really amaze me. You find locations & details I've not seen/heard before. It's funny, what Rick describes as weird I think of as wonderfully unique. As my Dad used to say, "who wants to be like everyone else?!" I thoroughly enjoyed this video, thank you SO MUCH!!
Another fun stroll down Rockford memory Lane. I know seventh Street well. there was a great comic book store. I grew up visiting called Clyde’s comics. It was close to the Cheap Trick music store. Here’s a funny cheap trick related story. They played my stepmom’s prom. She remembered that when they were famous. I think Rick Nielsen lives off the rock river right now.
Dream concert 1979 Wisconsin style...Bad Boy opening, then Yipes! and last Cheap Trick as the headliner. A little Off Broadway mixed in there would be good too.
Huge CT fan here😊seen em 5 times. Just wish Bun E. was still there😒I even seen em at the Coca Cola Roxy on the last show of their Silver tour😊was Robin's birthday that day will never forget and was a great concert.. ps. Their debut album is one of rocks best debut albums ever in my book
You were 5 minutes from my house in "WAU-KAH-SHA" :) We've crossed paths in Orlando at the Hogan Beach Shop signing. Would have been rad to pump into you again. Cheers! DK
@@DazewithJordantheLion I've heard many people get that pronunciation wrong. You have to live in Wisconsin or Northern Illinois for a while to pronounce a few of the names in the area.
@@bilburns1313 Agreed...Wahh---kuh--shaw.....as a local it burns my ears to hear it mispronounced. I actually went to HS with the daughter of CT's first manager who was in Madison.
I have been a die fan of Cheap Trick for a long time since I started listening to them for fun and all these years later I'm 46 years old since last month and I grew up with them when they were popular in the 1980's when they played the songs in the 70's and the 80's and now
I grew up in Waukesha in the 70s and 80s. I remember when Sunset Bowl had a fire and all of the bowling pin machines were outside in the parking lot, all charred. I would think if there was any memorabilia it probably burned up. And it's pronounced walk eh shaw or waa-kuh-shaa
One of my first concerts was KISS with CHEAP TRICK as the opening act in 1977 and they were so good they ALMOST upstaged KISS!! By 1979 they were one of the biggest rock groups in the world. Thanks Jordan for covering the spots in Rockford that were associated with this often misunderstood and underrated band
Since many have already corrected you on Waukesha (Walk ish auw) I’ll fill you in on the show/dance hall. They have long since remodeled but I played that room multiple times back in the mid 80s. It was much darker and more plain than than now. They had a very wide stage with even higher shelves on the side. It used to pack people in. There are videos out there telling the story of how they were discovered.
I’ve seen them twice in concert in recent years and being a drummer myself, Bun E Carlos needs to come back! Nothing against Rick’s son but come on guys!
Oh, And by the way, great flag.I love it and I didn't know that cheap trick was around that area at any time and I do Love. Cheap trick and rick nielsen Story is a very interesting one. Good to see katie.😊
You totally missed it. Their manager Ken Adamany brought them out to Los Angeles to play the Starwood. It was a showcase for the industry. I was hired to do pre promotion before the gig. I handed out the original t-shirts and put up posters announcing their arrival. I worked at Peaches and Licorice Pizza at the time. I actually got Tower Records on Sunset to put “welcome to LA Cheap Trick” on the marquee in the parking lot. There is a very early photo of Tom Petty and the heart breakers where Benmont Tench is wearing a Cheap Trick shirt. I worked with Stan Lynch (Petty’s original drummer) at Peaches , I gave Stan some shirts and this is how Benmont got his. I went to the show at the Starwood and of course was blown away. A bit of history from someone who was there.
Hey jordan, I enjoyed this video as well. It's interesting that the old building where Rick's parents own the antique music gift shop building is still there. It's sad that it's no longer open I am so grateful that my cousin and I went up there to visit that store back around 1995 before they closed it very unique indeed I remember it well because it was on mother's Day weekend and my cousin wished all of the ladies in the store a happy mother's day. It was bittersweet though because Rick's dad passed away shortly before we visited there was all kinds of musical instruments, some of the cheap tricks gold records on the wall add all kinds of knickknacks I believe Rick's mother and possibly one of his aunts were running the store he definitely looked like them I asked if they sold any cheap trick guitar picks and some guy opened up a desk drawer and pulled out some and just gave them to me a very memorable trip indeed:-)
I saw CT early in their career at a bar called Sargent Peppers. Way before they became world famous. The bar was located north of Rockford near the Illinois/Wisconsin Stateline. I believe it was in South Beloit.
Cinnamon Cinder is the name of the venue you are showing that is now Rockford Billiards. Never was the name of the group. That building was also known as The Stardust, and later Great Illinois Purchase and The Mating Place.

Where was Rick Nelsen; you said that you were going to talk to him towards the end of the video.
Not True
No i didnt. I said we were meeting him next month. Clean your ears
Where? are you from? Say Waukesha three times..... 😂😂
