@dankaren95 u are correct that ma was earlier than kong by one generation. ma was later than jiang jialiang and chen longcan and was the teammate of wang tao.

Ma can be regarded as the successful European shakehand style of inverted rubber after he changed his backhand from short pips to inverted rubber. before that, Cheng Yinghua and Xu Zengcai were also the representatives.

Ma Wenge born 1968, Ma Long born 1988.
If that is 2007, Ma Wenge is 39 y.o. Ma Long is 19 y.o.
    Amazing!!!

Ma Wenge was the Chinese prototype of European shakehand style using smooth rubber on both sides of his paddle.

Ma Wenge got 2 games from the Dragon. That was impressive. I thought it would be a no-contest. Ma Wenge was from the mediocre era and Ma Long took Chinese TT to an all-conquering era. But credit Ma Wenge, at least in this match, played a competitive match against a teen Ma Long.

Ma Wenge from the medriocre era?More like the competitive era.Ma Long plays the same style as Ma Wenge with just an improved serve and pushing game.
And how Ma Long took Chinese TT to the conquering era when he brought back to relevance Samsonov and Boll, veterans that were pretty useless against Wang Hao/Ma Lin?

I apologize for not being clear with my words. Mediocre "Chinese" TT era. Because the Chinese TT athletes from the 90s were the least achieved group among the many Chinese TT national teams. Comparing the 1990s Chinese TT players to Ma Long and Fan Zhendong is not even comparable. Let's say in a game of 21 points, the 90s players were like at least 5 points below that of Ma Long and Fan Zhendong. In a set of eleven points, at least 3 points deficits.
I am not biased here. The Chinese players from the 1990s didn't even have footwork. Ma Wenge was the better one among that mediocre bunch. Liu Guoliang was the only bright star and lucky for the Chinese TT team, they had Ma Lin come up in the late 1990s. Ma Lin anchored the Chinese TT national team for the next 10 years.

@@benthekeeshond545 When did the Chinese lack footwork? The difference is that Europe and Korea had good TT players.
I highly doubt Ma Long is faster than Ma Wenge and let's not talk about Fan cause he's already fat as hell and very vulnerable to the wide forehand.

The Koreans were good and the Swedes were the best during the 90s. But that didn't imply the Chinese players couldn't be bad. For real, how can you compare Wang Tao, Teng Yi, Ma Wenge or even Kong Linghui to Ma Lin, Wang Liqin, and Wang Hao? I will tell you one thing. I heard many stories from a few Chinese provincial players who migrated to the US. In the late 1980s, corruption was across-the-board at the Chinese provincial TT levels. Players bribed their coaches or managers to move up the ranks. Those players mentioned above sure conform to the accounts.

Ma Long doesn't have footwork??? This got to be a joke!
Ma Long has everything and the perfect modern TT player in the new 40mm ball era. His record speaks loud and clear. The players outside of China are having a real hard time because of players like Ma Long, Zhang Jike, Xu Xin, and of course, Fan Zhendong. They are really, really good. However, Ma Long and Xu Xin will be gone soon and Zhang Jike is history. The future Chinese national team may not be as strong as it was in the last 20+ years. As of now, Fan Zhendong is the player who can replace Ma Long. The rest are also good players but can they achieve the same results as Zhang Jike or Xu Xin, that remains to be seen.

You can see how much Ma's power and footwork and consistency has progressed. I watch this and can see that the current Ma Long would be absolutely crushing Ma Wenge with about less than half the errors.

You may well be right, but this was a 40-year-old Ma Wenge. If you consider a 25 year old Ma Wenge, you will see that the difference wouldn't have been so much. Obviously Ma Long remains probably the GOAT, but Ma Wenge has been a really great player.
