  • Rocky the opossum returns after going missing 5 months ago! I decided to give her a big welcome home dinner.
Do not try to raise a possum, they have very complicated needs and are not easy to take care of.

I live in the Pacific Northwest. Way North. I began feeding one little possum who accidentally found herself inside of my living room. I knew nothing then.....4 hours later...after trying to gently remove her...i attempted to sit garlic near her. Oh .. Please 😢
Never do this. I cried when she started to cry. I felt horrible. It never got closer than 2 feet....but i was ignorant about these sweet babies. She eventually left. But looked so sad. Since that horrible life lesson that evening... almost 3 years ago ....I have a back porch full of possums. Some ive seen for years...i can tell my elderly ones....and I've been blessed to see, video babies riding up upon Mama's back. It's the most beautiful thing to see ❤
My little one...she had a tail that was almost half black....she was young at the time of the incident...a few months later i spotted her about 4 feet from the back deck....eating away on a piece of watermelon 🍉. My heart soared. I've seen her many times since. Be gentle to them. They are wonderful gardeners companions, eating slugs, ticks, grubs.....they mean no harm to anyone. If one should wander in your house...my slider door goes directly to my back porch, they wander in from time to time...i just softly say...no baby...and they turn around. Just don't scare them. Enjoy them! They are so cute! 🤗🍉🍓

I'm just going to say (and prepare for a novel comment) -- While I appreciate the effort you're putting in, as others have suggested -- Please, consult (and keep consultation) with a rehab-specialist who works with opossums.
They need special care and a special diet that's beneficial to their health and well being. Small treats are okay here and there, and I hope that as you said, this kind of meal is only a once and a great while thing.
Non-fat yogurt, kale, cabbage, collard greens, bok choy and other calcium rich foods are best as they will help keep calcium levels well.
If you feed her any bugs or worms (crickets, mealworms, super worms, hornworms, or even earth worms *they like these a lot), dust them with a calcium powder every other feeding (you can find this at a pet store as it's usually used to on reptiles for their insect diets).
Opossums also need vitamin D -- while they are nocturnal, they still need it to keep up their metabolism. Most reptile calcium include vitamin D in the mix.
While meat is okay for them, I'd suggest feeding whole prey items. Frozen rats or mice (which are easily accessible online or at a pet store) which are bred for consumption by animals (such as snakes and meat eating lizards) are a good option since they'll contain the bones and vital organs which have nutrients in them as well.
Cooked meat is something I wouldn't advise since the cooking process removes a lot of the vital components that are necessary to an animal that primarily feeds on a raw meat diet.
However, do not feel them raw red meat like beef or pork.
You can also feed them dubia roaches which are good protein and can be bought online (and if you set up a colony of them they breed easily under the right circumstances).
I'd mention slugs and snails, but given those slimy crawlers could have been dining on plants polluted with pesticides, it wouldn't be advisable to simply pluck some from the garden or hiking trail and give them to your opossum. They may eat them in the wild, but they learn what's edible by smell and what isn't.
They have a very adapt sense of smell.
As for releasing her: Don't. Even if it's just to think she'll return for good food once and a while. She's not habituated well to living outside in the wild. She never learned how to hunt and will likely sniff out human food (as that's all she's really known since early on). She'll seek out garbage, which is not good at all.
If anything, if you feel her life would be better in a more suited environment, there are orphaned opossum rescues out there that will take her in and either try to properly rehabilitate her or keep her and give her the best like possible in captivity.
While having an opossum friend can be fun and amusing, they do stress easily and that can lead to a host of issues as well. The drool and stench you smelled when you first got her back was a natural stress reaction. They drool when stressed and release a smell from their butt that amplifies the "I'm dead" reaction we're most used to. However, it's also released when stressed. Opossums are naturally a bit smelly as a result. It's not them being dirty or something wrong, it's just a reaction to stress and their natural odor. They're actually really clean animals and clean themselves almost constantly when at ease.
My best advice would be to either keep in close contact with a wildlife rehabilitation specialist or find her a new home with one. They'll know what to feed her, how much, their life cycles, and they'll also have other opossums (they're somewhat of a social species; within reason).
    Do not release her, please?
She will not survive, even if you feed her. They don't live long at all in the wild due to a multitude of reasons and if your home is anywhere near a road, she might very well get hurt or die trying to get back to it to eat.
That said, I appreciate the concept, but it's best to leave it to the professionals if you're unsure. If you are, do research and make sure you're giving her the best life possible in captivity, not in a half-wild kind of situation. That usually doesn't work so well for the animal.
    Just my long-winded 2 cents.

It broke my heart and was a good reminder that yes they’re cute cuddly little critters but they’re wild and that’s why I did as little handling as possible. Rescues are not only time consuming but it does take a person with a huge heart and and compassion to do what’s right for them in order to keep them alive and safe.

I found one joey in a thunderstorm and it had a lidless bin at first, but it would trash its habitat and call out at times. So i overturned the bin and on top of it i put a twinkie box with a washrag inside for its new bed, put its food bowl and water thimble on the opposite side of its bathroom spot and it was happy. It rode on my shoulders most of the time and liked sleeping in the upturned bottom of my shirt when i was sitting (like a pouch). I washed it once a week and dried it by 'blow dry- petting' it and it had a magnificent mane, plus it was eating cat food and doubled in size in the 2 weeks we co-habitated. That animal took more craps than anything i have ever seen, i had to be vigilant with cleaning up after it. All in all it was a pretty cool animal to have known.

There actually aren’t many wildlife rehabbers who’ll take opossums, since they’re seen as nuisances. So unfortunately, in a lot of areas, your choices are very limited: let the animal die or try your best to give it a good life. I do agree that he’s over socialized her and thinks of her as more of a pet than what she is - a wild animal. There’s sadly not much humans can do to teach a wild animal how to be wild again after socializing it so animals raised by humans will have a hard time adjusting to the wild no matter what. But he didn’t do as much to prepare her as he could have, and put his wants to keep her over her needs. Speaking from experience as someone who’s had to raise an opossum without professional help, it can definitely be difficult emotionally to make the decision to de-socialize them for release, but it’s what’s best for them. Healthy animals can - and should - be released.

She may walk into someone yard expecting food only to be offered lead. If you intend to keep her then possum proof your house, and her enclosure.

It escaped and ate his mice, it was fine. He’s assuming it can’t survive because it’s skinny but I doubt he knows what a healthy wild opossum feels like. It scavenges for survival in the wild, it’s not suppose to be fat like he wants it to be.
If he wanted it to be free, he should have let it go. Him recapturing it and treating it like a pet isn’t going to help it’s survival rate in the wild. If you’re gonna do that, than just keep it as a pet but stop traumatizing it. He’s completely sabotaging the animal by forcing it to be comfortable around humans for food.

This is the sweetest thing I've seen on here. And for her to sit on ur shoulder like that after being in the wild, says she does remember sum :D I've rescued a couple opposums and one we named Damion. He remembered us a few months later. But I did just the same as you. My thing was I just wanted him to have a lil bit better life and their full lifespan is not guaranteed.. so I washed him and fed him and kept him warm for about a week then let him go. The thing is, my dog got his mom. I ran and grabbed her and kept her over night to let her recoup. But, I could tell she had recently had babies, but they were not in her pouch. Which made me think she left them at a nest area and went scavenging for food. I watched where she went and it was under a barn. Well only a month later and here comes Damion and he kept coming up in my dogs area which scared me. So I got him and took care of him, then set him up to an area where he could always find food. Anyway, good job ❤

As someone who has worked with wildlife, this guy has no clue what he's doing and no business handling these animals. Also hate to break it to you, but that is absolutely not the same opossum. You snatched a random young, newly-on-its-own opossum from the wild and stressed the hell out of it for days for no reason. Or for the views, I guess. You can have all the good intentions in the world, but that does not preclude you from doing harm.
If you really care, find a licensed rehabber with the proper experience to take care of a truly orphaned baby. Or in this case, call a rehabber who would have told you this particular opossum was fine and should have been left alone. I can't tell you how many baby animals I've seen that have been snatched from the wild, often not even true orphans or in need of help to begin with, by people who think a little Google search can teach them enough to take care of them. Many of these people end up doing severe and even fatal damage to them. I've struggled to save deer fawns that were on death's door after a family tried to take care of them for a week before bringing it in. One fawn was already in critical condition, and the family was gloating about how well he was eating when they dropped him off. While he was in actuality dying before their eyes. Based on their story of finding him, he almost certainly wasn't even abandoned to begin with. But their good intentions kidnapped and killed that fawn. If you don't know what you're doing, LEAVE THEM ALONE.

    • @christinalove6344
      @christinalove6344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@Indigo Rebel there are certain states you can own a possum without a permit..in these places the people who get them dont then set them out to wander around neighborhoods where cars or people will likely kill them..they are wild animals most who have one its because they have an injury that prevents them from having a normal life..I think selling possums as pets is just as bad as buying a puppy from a puppy mill just because you wanted that one type of dog and didnt care about the history of the parents.

I noticed that ticks from all over part of the house/yard were kind of attracted and crawl toward the dog (probably because the warmth), then they suck the blood and die.

These videos are interesting. And it’s good to help animals, but i think it’s also very important to do a lot of research on how best to handle and hold each different kind of creature one would attempt to hold. In trying to capture the possum, should have just used a small cage, or if not that, a pillow case would even be feasible. The yellow gloves and catching her every time she jumps away and all that falling, tumbling, and catching stuff, doesn’t help her to be calm, just as it wouldn’t help a human be calm if a human was being caught and tumbling and being caught again and falling etcetera. Think about the condition of how animals may feel physically and mentally, and respect that in nature and than one would be able to handle various kinds of animals better. Also it’s not a good idea to handle a animal of any kind with bare hands until building and establishing trust first. If you want or need to capture them, first capturing them gently in a cage and than offering food and other forms of comfort like a something soft to lay on etcetera would help build trust. Building trust before handling is a good idea so as to not get various animal bites. And the part where getting bitten, that isn’t good handling, and she is trying to find stable ground and doesn’t want to be held. It’s good to pay attention to the animal (not the camera) when talking and narrating and respect how the animal “feels” or each and every animal you handle in all kind of manner will bite you. We can see and hear you, so you don’t need to constantly be looking at the camera. Look at the animal and think of how it feels in the current situation. For example, we all know birds like to perch. But also it’s good to know what textures are most comfortable to animals on their feet. Not every animal may like the feel of our skin, hands, or our body temperature which they feel when we touch them depending on the kind of little hands, feet’s and claws they have. Overall this channel is great. And i think Josh is an awesome human with a lot of ambition and heart. And i believe he will only get better over the years with what he does in life. God Bless. ✨🙏✨💜💕
