    DO NOT tell me how you would unhook or yank the power cables off I needed a 13mm to disconnect them, that wasn't a option. I was trying to tap on the solenoid to get it to stop.
    THIS TRUCK FAILED TO START BECAUSE OF WEAK BATTERIES, the starter solenoid had stuck causing the starter to keep running, not the relay under the hood, but the SOLENOID MOUNTED DIRECTLY on the starter that draws unfused power from both batteries (there is no fuse that can stop this)! Sure it's not a true runaway, but the engine was spinning without me being able to stop it, be careful if this happens to you it can cause a fire.
    If you want to see a good -6F cold start check out www.youtube.co.... to see a well maintained powerstroke.
    After letting my 97 F350 7.3 PowerStroke Diesel sit for a week I go out to start it up after it being 15 degrees the night before. Block heater wasn't plugged in.
    I have done a complete tear down of this engine, check it out at
    www.youtube.co....
    In April 2013 I just put a new starter solenoid on it, and I will be taking it back to Advanced Auto Parts to get a new one as it is CLEARLY defective, it's done this several other times but never for more than 1-3 seconds and it usually only did it when I would shut the truck off. Crazy.
    This same week I was blessed enough to have found 96 F350 7.3 from the original owner that is was in much better shape just in need of a efuel system.

      Edwardo Snowdeno happened to me about 2 years ago. Pretty alarming! The only way to stop it was disconnecting the battery, which is scary enough on its own; with the starter chugging away, it's drawing a LOT of amps, so there's a nice arc when you pull the terminal!

    I had a 2002 F450 with the 7.3 PowerStroke. She was a wonderful truck and that engine ran 330,000 miles before the company I worked for traded it in. It got hard to start on cold weather, and I found a solenoid bad for the glowplugs. In all that milage the only significant repairs were one lube oil pump, injectors, and oil cooler gaskets. Never once let me down. Any small problems I made it home with the truck and was able to fix in my garage.

    My dad worked at Yingling Chevrolet in Wichita, KS back in 1968 when it burned down. The fire chief and a few of his men died in that fire, in fact, there were several new fire regulations and training courses that came from that disaster that are still taught around the country to this day. My dad told me that somebody had been working on a truck during the day and it was a manual and in gear, somewhere along the line there was a small wrench that was teetering on the edge of the motor and somehow during the night, it fell off and landed in between the starter and the block and it caused the starter to engage. The truck rolled across the shop floor and crashed into the wall and then proceeded to keep cranking while the tires were spinning until it finally caught fire. Crazy freak accident and ended up taking some lives. I want to say it was on Christmas Eve as well. I'll have to look it up again and refresh my memory. Thanks for posting.

    Love the stuck solenoid problem. I work at a jeep CJ restoration shop and have to occasionally do the "solenoid shuffle" when the fender solenoid sticks from cranking with a low battery. Running to open the hood and hit the thing with any hard object readily available or take the battery cable loose. We took in a Scrambler that burned up from it. Guy didn't know what to do and watched it go up in flames. Good times.

    Low voltage across the start solenoid contacts will generate an arc that starts melting the contact face.over time they get worse just like ign points.the end result is stuck or melted together copper contacts,especially on diesel motors.500 to 600 cca? On a cold start.plus there is the glow plugs pulling batt voltage down.alternator faults can be a big problem.sulfated batts.parasitic current draw with key off.

    this thing reminds me of the 8V-92 2 stroke detroit in my RV hauler truck ,,,no such thing as a quick start in cold weather ,,if it isn't plugged in likely as not it won't start at -6F without a LOT of cranking ,,it's a case of crank it till it starts cause it will eventually start
    you won't burn up the starter ,,likely you'll melt a cable ,, and in my truck you'll never run the batteries down cause i have an APU/generator capable of supplying 600+amps continuous to the batteries ,,and also supplies power to the engine heater , as well as warms the coolant directly

I've seen his happen and sewn what happens when a heavily drained battery has a spark nearby and it ignites the hydrogen gas being emitted from the battery. He would have had 2 batteries to disconnect and risked possibly being burned by a hot terminal. A group size 65 battery has an average of 1000 cranking amps at 32 degrees and 800 cold cranking amps at 0 degrees. When the magnetic field colapses, there would be a brief recoil of power that could pop the ECM and or body control module.

    Some ignition switch systems aren't one piece wired to the ignition like the good old days. A previously failed Lincoln (related to Ford) switch had a plunger driven by the tumbler assembly that ran some of the contacts for starting. If the casing the plunger rides in cracked from cold or cold causes a plunger to stick the same symptoms might show up. Symptom for the messed up plunger assembly is the turning of the key is a little off and seems a little loose. Like you know parts stores are happy to throw parts at us. Anyway, good luck trouble shooting in the future.

      Like a Duramax is any better than another POS! Why do you think most diesel mechanics call them and dirty max. Junk! If this door knob had a better injector pump and the glow plugs were actually working it would've started! Cummins uses the grid heater which heats the air not the cylinder individually it's a fail from the beginning!

    The key twister is where the defect is. Flicking that ignition rapidly creates big arcs...you welded the contacts closed. And please, if the truck doesn't start up in a few seconds, wait a minute or two before trying again. Keep in mind that if the voltage drops too low that the injectors WILL NOT FIRE! Best to cycle the key on, wait for the glow plug light to go out, wait...wait...wait, then fire it up.

      At higher altitude the air is not as dense, any NON-turbo charged engine (gas or diesel) will not.

    I had this happen in my old Ford ranger. It was the starter relay. Not the solenoid. It ran so long before I could disconnect the battery it fried the starter. Lucky for me the starter was under warranty and the relay was not too hard to diagnose. I would check it out before getting too wild with a new starter and possibly frying it as well.

    I went to turn my '94 Chevy k1500 over after I had just driven it. I heard a "click", but the starter didn't start. I checked the voltage at battery, had 12.4 volts. I checked the starter and it was covered in oil and grease (probably 10 years worth of it), so I figured the problem was the starter since the battery voltage was good.
    I put a new starter in, fired the truck up and it still just clicked. Turned out the voltage on the battery was fine, but the amps were extremely low. At least now my entire electrical system is brand new (Alternator, starter, and battery).

    the 7.3 L V8 (Navistar T444E) is made by Navistar International. ford put that engine in their super duty trucks from 1999-2003. with a cylinder bore of 4.11 in and a piston stroke of 4.18 in, gave the engine roughly between 210-275 Hp and 425-525 lb-ft of Torque to the wheels. in simple terms, a dependable engine that had little to no issues with proper care and maintenance. although its common to see them leak oil, im not too concerned. my families 7.3L V8 diesel was built in 2000, and still going strong today with well over 300,000 miles.

  • @Squall762
    @Squall762 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand that your batteries and starter were on their way out, but the starter stuck on because you were cranking it for too long, causing the solenoid (Which is usually external to the starter motor) to jam/weld in the on position, and thus why it kept attempting to start. If a vehicle doesn't start with in 10 cranks max, you really should stop, double check connections, wait then try again. There's usually a reason behind a car taking a long time to start.
    Those are some good photos at the end of the video by the way, Very clear and display that oil leak rather well.

    • @PatrickBaptist
      @PatrickBaptist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Squall762 Thanks, oh the problem was low volts, the solenoid had been acting up for a while it would even start cranking when I would shut the truck off after driving, new solenoid, no more problem.
      I bought this truck with dusted piston rings so it hated cold starts.
      I know all about motors in general and I just abuse them for the fun of it and it's funny to me and it was mine to do that to. WHen I first bought the truck GPs didn't work so I would just crank on it 3-5mins straight till one day the starter was glowing red and smoking like crazy and I got some glow plugs, that starter was a champ, I also rode it up and down the back yard as needed because i parted out this truck in favor of a 96 I had just bought and was going to tow back to the house when this 97 failed on me.
      I drug this other truck home with a Explorer LOL check it out -6F cold start and this was no fail --th-cam.com/video/dS1VvZ7gnto-/w-d-xo.html- This truck had new batteries and starter 6 months prior so the starter had a lifetime warranty so do keep that in mind ;-)
      This truck was well taken care of but the idiots at the local ford stealership couldn't get her started, after loads of money thrown at it, shuck I took it home to find clogged fuel strainer in front tank and busted pickup tube in the rear tank which killed the fuel pump too, didn't take me long at all to have a real super nice well taken care of truck from the original owner. I hated to had to have sold it in June but life happens.

    When that happens on a Ford, hit the fender mounted solenoid not the starter. This is a very common issue and usually happens when the batts are low. This happens on gas and Diesel engines.

    • @PatrickBaptist
      @PatrickBaptist  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bud stick with the legos, they are quite fun and all but yeah auto mechanics is another matter. Might want to educate yourself a bit better. I've had lots of Fords, the RELAY on the fender isn't a solenoid, the starter solenoid is mounted on the starter, I've got starter replacement videos on another F350 and a Taurus, both have solenoids on the starter, read the description. I chopped up the truck, I know exactly what was wrong with it. First time I've seen this, I agree bad batt are a stupid idea, burns out starters, done that many a times, to throw a new batt in and the starter take a dump within a week.

    • @dominicsbricks2403
      @dominicsbricks2403 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Been a mechanic for 20 years, and while you are correct about the starter mounted solenoid, there in a lot of F series trucks that also use the fender mounted one as well together with the starter mounted one. And also I know that the glow plug relay looks almost identical on the outside, it’s quite different inside. Without seeing your engine bay and seeing your trucks configuration I was giving a polite guess as to what causes that issue. I have experienced that exact issue many times on Fords of all types with fender mounted solenoids. I have never ran into one doing that with the starter only mounted one.

    • @PatrickBaptist
      @PatrickBaptist  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      " there in a lot of F series trucks that also use the fender mounted one" Didn't say there wasn't a RELAY mounted on the fender, I was stating the SOLENOID is on the starter.
      "Without seeing your engine bay and seeing your trucks configuration I was giving a polite guess as to what causes that issue" Didn't really seem like that, not to be rude, but I haven't been a mechanic for any 20 years but I don't assume stuff I don't know and that's why there is so much bad info on the internet about stuff, just guess without the research, and not just cars.
      "I have never ran into one doing that with the starter only mounted one." 1st one for me as well and I hope never to see it again, atleast this one made me more off this retarded video than I ever paid for the truck. I don't mean to sound rude, I'm just a blunt feller. I do like legos BTW, technic mainly, a man can even build a standard H pattern manual 5 speed with reverse with em, doesn't do much for any practical use, but it will shift correctly.
      Take care

    Guess it wanted to do some work! Oh I understand you cycling to turn your meter on, but the glowplugs will run for 90 seconds (I think) so cycling for the plugs wouldn't do much help, what I do is I let it do the full cycle and right as the battery gauge goes back up (not as much of a load since the relay shut off) I crank and I have more power to the starter because the plugs will stay on for I beleive 30 seconds after it started to help it run smooth. Not 100% sure about this though.

    • @PatrickBaptist
      @PatrickBaptist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WHat I did to my later trucks was put in a switch to control the GPR, but any of the trucks I had after this one were in much better shape.
      This was my first 7.3PSD also. I've since rebuilt them and are far better the wiser than back then.
      The GPs stay on from 30-90 sec depending on the outside temp, the PCM determines the time they are on (this is why people report different amounts of times they believe the GPs are on). One can wire a light into the dash and connect it to the GPR to see when the plugs actually are on. The PCM will even command them on for short durations while the engine is running. Like you said when the volt meter goes up some you have good reason to believe the GPs are off as well.
      I found when I took this engine apart the GPs for 7 and 8 were unhooked so I didn't get them connected all the way so it was only using 6 of the plugs anyways. but had there been 8 I prob would have had to bought batteries sooner. When it started I knew it wasn't firing on a cylinder or 2 until I tapped the go pedal a little. Now I know why. Thanks though.

      By hitting the throttle and any motor when it's too cold to start will cause excessive. Firing pressure when the motor actually ignites, if your motor is cold in either gas or diesel, hitting the throttle before the engine is at a good firing temperature will cause a failed gasket or some cooling issues.and by the way, diesel vehicles don't have spark plugs, depending on glow plugs dude...Idk how you would need to replace spark plugs in a diesel. Don't throw a fit because I was offering out friendly advise to someone weep owns a diesel like mine...

      The compression ratio is either 18:1 or 14:1 on your 7.3 until it reaches an optimum of of 15 degrees Celsius can the compression reach greater than 14:1... buy hiring the throttle you could jump that ratio to 25:1 easily...tell me more on how I don't know what I'm talking about

      Elijah Ford How would his engine have a compression ratio of either 14:1 or 18:1, they're all 17.5:1.
      Secondly, how does one change the compression ratio with the throttle? And actually in the (6.0L) powerstroke owners manual it'll tell you to depress the throttle halfway if it doesn't start.

    They should be changed as regular maintenance.
    The problem with this motor is that it won't hardly crank unless it
    is plugged in. It usually takes about an hour to get it to where it will
    start without a hassle in 40 degree weather. It needs between 1 1/2 hours
    to 2 hours in the 10's to 30's. I hated the 7.3 before I found this out.
