SWISS F18 HORNET DEMO - WADDINGTON AIRSHOW 2012 (airshowvision)

  • Airshowvision proudly present the one standout highlight of the 2012 UK airshow season - the Swiss F18 Demo team performance from the Waddington Airshow.
    This was no surprise as whenever the Swiss demonstrate their F18C it is always the highlight of any airshow; they are just so much better than anyone else at showing what the mighty F18 can do in the air.
    They even upstage the Super Hornet with ease - just watch how much more entertaining this demo is than the US Navy Hornet at Farnborough 2012. The Swiss win hands down for entertainment, despite the Super Hornet being newer and more powerful.
    For me the F18C is probably the best fast jet demo aircraft in the world - you just never see a dull display from this jet, and the way in launches itself into the vertical seems unmatched by any other fast jet.
    I fist saw an F18 demo at my local airfield RAF Church Fenton in 1989 (I have just researched the date) from the Canadian Air Force, and the memories of that display never fade - it was awesome.
    Please note the new Airshowvision facebook page is now up and running at: airshowvision

    In all of the Swiss demos with this aircraft, it never ceases to amaze me how close the pilots come to doing a Kulbit-like maneuver, in an aircraft without thrust vectoring. Outstanding!

      I am currently building a model of the F18C Hornet from Academy hobby kit, 1/48 Scale, and I will use decals for the Swiss Air Force. Awesome sound and demo, high performance.

      @@guskarapas5752 if it’s not too late, you should also consider the finnish decals. Those pilots are bonkers in their f-18’s

    Breathtaking! As a Swiss I am glad we have these beasts protecting us 💪👍! When you go skiing or hiking in the alps - things Swiss people regularly do 😉 - you often hear them doing there training-sessions way above you - and you can hardly see them 😳! Last time was in Arosa beginning of February 2021 when they were doing two 2-hour trainings per day high above us, it was beautiful!

    As a sidenote:
    Swiss airforce - mainly relying of german language due to history, culture and geography... tried to differentiate themselves from german luftwaffe ("airweapon") by using other specifications... like flugwaffe ("flying weapon") back in the days...
    And the units are called - as mentionned here - fliegerstaffel ("aircraft units") instead of Germany's jagdgeschwader ("hunter units").

    The Swiss version of the F/A 18 needed a redesign of certain load carrying structural elements. The reason is that the typical Swiss mission has a much severe load spectrum, which means that the Swiss pilots would have gone through the plane's service life after around 40% of its intended flying hours.
    Essentially, some of the spants that carry the lift loads from the wings to the fuselage had to be made from titanium instead of the standard alloy.
    The Swiss F/A 18 should have under US Navy mission spectrum a safe lifetime of around 20000 flying hours (US Navy version is 6000 FH)

    • @stefangensetter6961
      @stefangensetter6961 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Falsch, die Fa-18 ist auch als Jagtbomber konzipiert! In der Schweiz nur als Jäger eingesetzt trägt sie nicht mal die halbe Last an Waffen für die sie gedacht ist! Also keine 6,5 Tonnen Bomben+2t Benzin extern =(8,5-8,8t) sondern max. 8*250 Kg L-L Lenkwaffen + 3*700Kg Flugbenzin unter den Tragflächen=4,1Tonnen extern!
      Somit ergibt sich keinerlei Überlastung der Struktur!

    • @iwotpron
      @iwotpron 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stefan Gensetter Das ist schon eine richtige Überlegung, dass die Schweizer FA-18 eine geringere Last an Waffen trägt. Das heisst aber nicht, dass das Flugzeug nicht schneller kaputt gehen kann.
      Die höhere Belastung der Struktur ergibt sich daraus, dass wir in der Schweiz um und über die Berge recht "scharf" fliegen müssen; das macht die Struktur des Flugzeugs sehr schnell kaputt. Die Piloten in der US-Navy müssen lediglich vom Flugzeugträger starten, um danach vor allem übers Meer gemütlich mit Reisegeschwindigkeit weiter zu fliegen. Für solche Missionen wurde eben die FA-18 entwickelt, und so lässt es sich halt in der Schweiz nicht fliegen. Deshalb das Redesign.
      Quelle: Hab dies im Rahmen meines Maschinenbaustudiums von einem am Redesign beteiligten Mitarbeiters der RUAG gelernt.

    • @stefangensetter6961
      @stefangensetter6961 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      iwotpron Trotzdem fliegen die Piloten der Navy (Die auch immer im Kampfeinsatz stehen) genau so scharfe Manöver! Von andauernd wechselnden klimatischen Verhältnissen gar nicht zu sprechen! Und Landungen auf einem Träger sind extrem Materialverschleissend!

    • @iwotpron
      @iwotpron 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stefan Gensetter Natürlich können die Piloten der Navy solche Manöver fliegen, die kommen aber in ihrem Alltag nicht so häufig vor wie bei uns. Genau darum geht es ja ...
      Weshalb sollen wechselnde klimatische Verhältnisse die Beanspruchung der Struktur beträchtlich beeinflussen?
      Eine Trägerlandung ist übrigens beanspruchungstechnisch viel weniger problematisch als scharfe Luftmanöver.

    • @stefangensetter6961
      @stefangensetter6961 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      iwotpron Wechselnd trockene Hitze und Sand in allen Ritzen inklusive Triebwerke, Salzwasser usw. ist nicht gerade förderlich! Und in extrem Manövern wirkt das Gewicht natürlich auch-->aber es ist ein Unterschied wenn 20Tonnen in einem Bruchteil einer Sekunde auf die Struktur wirken wenn man auf's Deck knallt bei einer Landung!

    The Swiss Air Force is 'capable' in as far as they can fly what they have very well, but the aircraft themselves are woefully under equipped. Additionally when you consider this is all they do, i.e. never deploy, never have anything to do other than practice manoeuvres, you'd rather hope that they're good at them.
