Why Duncan guides looks SO GOOD in terms of visuals, sound, teach-ability, personality and speech? They looks like 2 million dollars budget series. Always pleasure to watch!
I used to hate painting bases because I didn't have the know-how or the tools to make them interesting. Then came the DRPA. Now I love doing different bases.
I am branching out from GW , and my eyes are opening. There can be no question of GW superiority in model quality. But there are so many good alternatives out there , especially with GW prices. Duncan has proved this with his new paint range which I am know trying out and am quite happy. Do not limit yourself to GW only ! I’m a gamer of 30 years I’m 41 ! I can’t believe I’m only branching out know ! Mix up you hobby and products ! Good work Duncan you bring your GE knowledge and your own individual skill ! And initiative ! The hobby world 🌎 needs more people like you !
Basing can add so much "story" to the miniature. Kinda reminds me of Magic The Gathering cards in a way. The art, the title, and flavour text all shown a tiny fraction of a greater story, but even if one knew no context, it made one's mind wander.
Hi Duncan. Great informative tutorial. Loved the techniques and ideas. I have been watching your tutorials since lock down as I started painting then. My friend Rob introduced me to the hobby and told me to watch your videos. You met him on Saturday at Griffcon 2022. I am so grateful to you and Rob, as I really love the hobby. Thank you so much for inspiration and great work you do. Kindest regards Ian
I don't happen to play any tabletop games, but I love to paint minis! I have watched EVERY youtube video you have made thus far, and I just think you are amazing and just tooo darling. I am now a student of your academy, as of today! You have captivated me with your teaching style and techniques. I cant wait to watch and follow along with your mini/army tutorials.
tip: If you find that you are pushing the AK stuff around like a snow plow (or bulldozer for those of you from warmer areas) or you're lifting up the AK stuff because it sticks to the wheel/tank treads, wait for the AK stuff to harden just a touch.
Awesome results. If I may add some info of my own, Vallejo makes coloured textured paints too at very affordable prices. If I remember correctly they sell a black, darker brown, lighter brown and sand colours.
The Ash waste environment basing has the Dune vibe, only with motorbikes when it comes to Mad Max. The colour for the half-submerged rocks over the surface of the ash-sand is a good texture.
For the bark, I you can find them in smaller bags in arts and crafts shops like Michale's here in the US. They are used for flower arrangements. Hope it helps.
For folks in the States and Canada another alternative is Huge Minis texture gels, they might be a little easier to get a hold of on this side of the pond.
Love a good basing video, really good results - regarding the rust, have you ever experimented with the GSW liquid pigments? I have the rust set and they're great :)
perfect for my Night Eaters war band (a hybrid of the Night Lords and the World Eaters) their home world Blutmeer (Blood sea in german) is an ash waste but instead of the ash being from fire, the ash comes from dried up blood that has formed into particles from dying the ashes of burnt buildings and the sand from not just war on the surface but from the natives of the planet who are literally feral minded cannibals. Palanite Enforcers, the children, the doctors and even the postman and his cat are feral
for sockets from injection molding process, I just put tiny bits of sprue in there and melt them with plastic glue to level with the base. personally, this gives more predictable result than multiple layers of technical paint :)
Love the video but I am new to the hobby and wondered about the process of actually sticking the model to a base like this? What if it doesn't sit right? What's the best course of action? Also, how difficult is it to base with a model already glued to it? Thank you.
A few months late the party, but just wondering. I love using Weathering Powder to tie models into dusty setting bases like this. What shade/Colour would you go with, any particular brand? Would love a tutorial on use of Weathering Powder in general, there's not a tonne of good ones out there.
Damn that is a dope base, I wish this came out a few weeks ago before I decided on doing a Ruined Desert City (flag stones) for my Imperial Crusade army! These bases kind of demand some Steel Legion models love!
What would you recommend using on the miniature on this base to tie it in? What products could be spattered on the feet and legs of the mini to make it look as though it has been campaigning in this environment? Would agrellan earth work?
Would you say this would also work for bases based on the environment the Black Templars are fighting on in the John Blanche Black Templar art piece? :)
Hey Duncan love your videos and have signed up for you academy! Painting used to be my least favorite part of the hobby but now it’s easily my favorite! I wanted you opinion because I’m struggling to base my Black Legion, I want an urban theme where their pillage imperial cities but all of the ones I see look too dark and don’t contrast well. Do you have any recommendations to make urban or grey bases work with black miniatures?
Video request/suggestion: You use a wide variety of paint colors in your videos, how about a video on paint mixing (combined with thinning!) that shows newer painters what can be accomplished with just an Army Painter (etc.) starter kit?
I will second Duncan's suggestion of using AK Interactive's Ultra Matte Varnish in your washes. That stuff is incredible, and not just as a way to finish your model. It will kill the shine of the glossiest of inks, as well as thinning them down. My most recent army project, I came across a similar process you used here for cobblestone bases, where I painted the stone in overly saturated colors, roughly highlight the stone, then do a variety of thinned down mottled washes, dry brush, paint any detail, wash again and dry brush again. I've gotten so many complements on those bases, it's a little disheartening when people focus on that, and not the minis on the bases.
I feel like this is a silly question, but how would you stick the model onto the base? with the paint and uneven ground it doesn't seem like a strong hold.
My advice: cook it in the oven at 200°C or more for 15-20 min. It will kill anything. You can also soak it in glycerin, it will seal the pores and help with the painting.
I've seen a lot of people talking about the Dirty Down effect paints, like Dirty Down Rust and Dirty Down Verdigris. Have you tried them out and what are your thoughts?
Apply the miniature first, then build the base around it after you've painted the miniature, that way it looks in-bedded. We do the same on all our minis 😊 Check out the mini's on our Community page : th-cam.com/channels/uRNH2cb6VwsZbzILptDVIA.htmlcommunity
I actually put some color in the texture paste cause I’m a lazy **** and also this way you only need to buy some light pastes instead of the whole AK variety
Awesome base! How would you go about painting a more directional-looking chipping effect? I'd like to paint the terrain in my Ash Wastes set to look like it's getting sand-blasted from one particular direction, I think that'd make a cool video =)
Wouldn't the metal need moisture to start rusting? And since you're painting ash wastes, there'd be very little moisture. It's more likely the metal would be sanded clean and look very worn down.
Bro are you spying on me i googled this literally like 8 hours ago and bam here you make a video. PS i promise the Ms won't hear a thing about your borrowing from the garden 😉
Sir Duncan...we meet again...lol This post is irrelevant to your video...I bought the Be'lakor model just shortly after his re-release & am fed up with my beloved ULTRAMARINES being picked on so I painted the dead space marine as a Dark Angel (Muhahaha), my question is, what shade should I use? I'm thinking Athonian Camoshade but would coelia greenshade work just as well..? P.S when it comes to bases I bought the sector imperialis bases...😁👍
What's the rush? you have an appointment you gotta get to? Your breath and speech is so quick that you're gonna hyperventilate. I know you speak quickly in your other videos, but on this one you've cranked it up a couple of notches. Slow down, you have an attentive audience, we're not going anywhere. Just an opinion of concern.

That'll be because of Roger, we've been doing this together right from the start of GWTV (nearly 10 years now)😊 Also, thank you for the kind words

AK interactive makes wonderful hobby products. Thank you for all the hard work
Our pleasure!
Cluld I possibly ask for some more materials about AdMech on the Academy? I'm about to start an army and there's never too much information.
We will add it to our list 😊
I love seeing what people can do on bases, so it's really inspiring to see how it's done too

@@1234kalmar it definitely adds a lot of life to a base too

I painted up an Imperial Fist just as a side project, but couldn't decide how to base him. Now I know. Thanks!
No problem!
Gives me new ideas for my death guard. Duncan you taught me the toxic bases I use now. Thanks for all the tutorials!

WOW! At first I was unsure just how much that tiremark would show then POP, it's very recognizable! Pretty awesome stuff!
Great to see the ash waste love. They are great models and my first step into Necromunda !
They are nice aren't they? Tons of character.
The Ash waste environment basing has the Dune vibe, only with motorbikes when it comes to Mad Max. The colour for the half-submerged rocks over the surface of the ash-sand is a good texture.
Really like these basing videos, hopefully they will be more frequent!
For the bark, I you can find them in smaller bags in arts and crafts shops like Michale's here in the US. They are used for flower arrangements. Hope it helps.
I've been looking for a ash waste base like this for so long! Will be perfect for my Red Corsairs once I start them.
I absolutely love AK's stuff. I use streaking grime to weather miniatures very often.
Great guide! Going to use it for both my heresy Iron Hands, and also try to scale it down for my Draconis Combine!
I love basing! Would you ever consider a tutorial for water effects and resin?
7:10 Duncan Rhodes confirmed Blue Peter!
perfect for some raiding Dark Elf bases! thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks! I added some blue and pink and it works for Tzeentch base.
Awesome stuff Duncan
Great stuff, as per usual!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Would love to see a Trench Warfare basing tutorial on building trench bases that are a quagmire of mud and debris like in WW1
For folks in the States and Canada another alternative is Huge Minis texture gels, they might be a little easier to get a hold of on this side of the pond.
I quite like Golden's texture paste. It's white, so you have to dye it or paint it whatever color you want, but I prime after basing pastes anyway.
My favorite part of basing... painting this rock to look more like rock.
Great Tutorial!!! Thank you! How would you do a wraithbone base?
Love a good basing video, really good results - regarding the rust, have you ever experimented with the GSW liquid pigments? I have the rust set and they're great :)
Perfect for my Necromunda Nomads :D Thanks!
Cool. Think I will use this on my Iron Golem warband for Warcry. Thank you Mr. Rhodes.

could you one day do a video on how you would go about pinning the model to a base such as this where there's a lot going on?
Great tutorial!
I love the base tutorials, only bad thing about them is there isn't more
Then you need to head on over to the Academy website...prepare to be amazed 🧙♂️
Well done honey, looks good!
Any tutorials you got the the cursed city miniatures?
Not at the moment as it sold out upon release and since then have had no interest...except for now 😊

Cool bases for the Xenomorph Nids :D
not really convinced with the typhus corrosion + ryza anymore (in general), but outside that the base looks stunning!

Nice base. But would it make more sense to paint the rusty metal and the rocks before applying the texture paint?
Well done
So do you build the base with your miniature on it? Or are they built/painted seperately?
If you're using bark from outside make sure you sanitize or you'll have little guests on your bases.
I tend to seal in my painted minis with a Varnish, do you think that'll help keep the bacteria out?
