That backhand was incredible. And fast. I remember Matt said in one episode 'let me know when he wakes up so I can knock him out again'
I love his backhand. I get tickled every damn time. If he gives you a warning it will only be one time before you get the backhand.
me and my mama, she's 92, watch Gunsmoke EVERY day!! and I LOVE to make her laugh, so when Matt backhands somebody, I always holler "BOOM!" or "POW YAYUH!" and she'll just laugh and clap, and I'll say, "WHEN are they EVER gonna realize? YOU DON'T BEAT MATT DILLON!!!!" oh we have so much fun......it's such an ESCAPE........thank you for posting these videos.......I LOVE THIS ONE! Gonna put it on m'Facebook page! lol

Matt Dillon defined the meaning of the word bitchslap.
Those backhands were so unexpected by the men who received them. Also, James Arness was so tall that he didn’t even have to be standing real close to reach other men.

Nope, he wasn't talking about Kitty. He was talking about Leona, in Time of the Jackals. Obviously, Kitty was his woman, but Matt would react the same with any man for talking that way about any woman.

Makes sense since James Arness fought in World War 2, still made this show despite a permanent war injury in his leg and fought through illnesses while still playing Matt Dillon.
James sure had a signature move using the backhand. It was a genius move to include this as so many fist fights was forward fists and kicking a mans belly when down. A great first strike move that is seldom ever anticipated as one is talking trash it arrives unexpectedly in todays times too.
Always enjoyed Matt's backhand more than when he shot people. The best one for me when shown in context is administered to Richard X. Slattery seen here at 1:13.
Someone above mentioned that clip, too. I agree with you both. In the quick clip, it's the way he goes flailing, but in context, you're right, he really asked for it...he just kept pushing.

I could be wrong, but my money's on the backhand due to his height. Easier to swing up on someone than down as far as he'd have to without broadcasting it. It gives him a bigger windup, smoother (and harder) follow through and just looks better, imo.

At 1:32 ...the worst punch I have ever seen an actor throw ...His name is Neville Brand ...he played Al "Scarface Al " Capone in The Untouchables TV show. Never knew him to do anything else until I started watching the GUNSMOKE re-runs 7 or 8 years ago. But now I know he showed up in a lot of westerns.
