    Nice demonstration. I purchased my memory mug in 1982, I just had a completely restored. It’s a little bit lighter now, and super reliable. There’s just nothing else on the planet that sounds like it.

    I have both of these synths, the Memory Moog is really gutsy, and not hard to find a really full sound that will shake the room, the JP6 is extremely under rated I think but its interesting niche is the quirky sounds it is capable of, that are easy to stumble into, that will have you exploring for hours, but not everyone wants a synth that has that sound palet. If you want a synth that when you push one button sounds like realistic strings, then next minute a patch that sounds like a Rhodes piano, and then next patch a distortion guitar, I do not think these are the synths you are looking for. I have read reviews where some people say the Juno 106 is great, the JP6 terrible, and for me, it just tells me that person wants a relatively simple melodic sounding sound pallet, and is not interested in exploring any of the extremes of sound designs you can get shy of having a fully modular synth.

    You really should compare these to the Rhodes Polaris, it uses the same CEM chips, but has a very different layout and feel.

    One thing that's cool about the Jupiter 6 is when in unison mode, if you suddenly feel like playing a chord, you can! It will sound thinner but still...

    This is the first time I’ve been first comment on a video and I had to overcome the instinct to type ‘first!’ Not until now did I truly understand that compulsion and why it is even more silly than I thought to say that. Love the vids, keep em coming. If only Roland would do a real reissue...

    You can mod the jup's trigger lfo to have a wider range than just simple vibrato. Being able to do a full sweep with this lfo opens some great possibilities.

    Nice video! Thanks for doing it! I bought a Jupiter 6 years ago for about $2300. I use it a lot more than my Sequential Rev2, even though the Rev2 is smoother and fuller sounding. I wish the Jupiter 6 was still so cheap, I would buy two more as spares!

    The Jupiter 6 sounds a lot more modern than the Memorymoog to me.

    Dude, keep em' coming. Who cares what Paul said? Oh Paul...
    Really fun to hear these instruments played together. I thought it was a very interesting comparison. They both sound wonderful, but I also prefer the sound of the Moog, when they stay in tune of course! If you guys are doing the big boys, how about doing the OB-8 vs OB-Xa? Not easy to find an OB-X, but it would be awesome to see all 3 compared together. Also, I know the Prophet 600 and Matrix 6 don't match up perfectly because M6 isn't knob per function (but there are lots of controllers to easily add this for today's musicians). I think they would be a good comparison due to their very similar price points today, both are CEM based + US made, and the fact that Tom & Dave are good friends & still collaborating on synths today. Plus, they both can be had for less than a Juno 60 or 106 and are superior synths (IMO).

    Jupiter-8’s solidly in the $20K+ range....crazy.

    Thanks for the video. I have a Memorymoog (LAMM) and had a Jupiter 6 with Europe kit that I sold 5 years ago. Comparing the JP6 with a Memorymoog makes no sense, they are two completely different machines. The JP6 is cleaner, more precise, more stable, more modern sounding. The Memorymoog is more raw, more modulation capabilities, more oscillators and sounds more vintage (and 100% stable with the Lintronics expansion). The Jupiter 6 lasted less than 6 months in my studio, its sound felt somewhat cold and sterile, but the Memorymoog will die with me.

    Great comparison thanks - Apart from the weird stickers the Jupiter looked absolutely mint! Love to have a classic synth in that condition one day! Memory Moog is very impressive, shame there isn’t a modern equivalent ( that normal humans can afford🤔)

      Hmmm... The knobs and sliders are pretty booger-coloured and the white is really off. There are still Jupiter 6 in their original tints (i've recently gotten one in that condition and i intend on keeping it that way ! I've got it covered when i'm not using it, that way UVs don't pass... I believe a course on retr0bright also could help although i'm concerned if the plastic won't become brittle after the treatment)

      @@Alexandre.Moonwell Not sure what you're on about, as my sliders are grey, not white. Does your filter self oscillate? Apparently some dont!

    • @Alexandre.Moonwell
      @Alexandre.Moonwell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xa1a the sliders and knobs are grey yes, and some square buttons are white. My filter does not self oscillate. I believe it is because i have the JP-6a (not an official name but there is one revision for the JP-6 line which started in like, mid 1984 if i recall) which includes a better voice assingment algorithm, midi thru and the possibimity to choose which two channels to send midi to, and i thought that was it but maybe the filter has been reworked ? My JP-6's filter sounds unlike any other, it's definitely an improvement over every synth i've heard including its older brother, it's really warm and organic and the resonance is fantastic, and that doesn't seem to correspond to most descriptions in the vintage synth forums. But i'm basing that on people who think more bass = fatter sound = better so should i really listen to them to judge a synth's sound ? (no). Ray parker jr. and daft punk have both used the JP-6 and found it warm 🤷🏻. In any case, the possibility to use band pass and high pass mode, a very rare thing in synthesizers, should be worth it alone, even if the filter was less of a masterclass

      @xa1a 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Alexandre.Moonwell Thank you for the very detailed response. I had no idea there were potentially 2 versions of the 6. This explains why mine self oscillates and others dont. Espen Craft had mentioned to me a couple of years ago that every JP6 he had or borrowed did not self oscillate. Which makes me think there are more the the JP6a versions than the JP6. I checked mine just to double check, and sure enough, no midi through, and no way to assign a split keyboard to individual midi channels. Thank you for this insight! Mind officially blown!

    The Jupiter-6 is 10 times more stable, The Memorymoog sounds 10 times better. The Juno-6/60 destroys a Jupiter-6 in pure tone. Jupiter-6 is more flexible modulation-wise. The memorymoog has the sounds AND the modulation possibilities, and 18 oscillators, jup-6 only 12.

    I worked in the studios at the time and I would not use a j6. it was in the same class as a bit 99 but x4 in price. I'm not a moog fan because I used them all the time and became boring. out of the two I would go for the moog. mainly filters and 3 ocilaters.i don't compare the j6 to a j8. not a keyboard I ever wanted. j8 I would.

    I used to have both. The MM specializes in huge sloshy detuned pads. The JP6 is really good at clear precise controlled sounds. Very animated and sparkly sounding. MM= very unreliable and poorly made. JP6= very reliable and very well made. They are like opposites. Got rid of the MM. Way overrated IMO. Still have the JP6. Love it.
