I appreciate that the Fung Bros brought up the interviews that the CRA cast has been doing recently and Ronny's answer to how we should respond. I agree that the non-Asian interviewers probably didn't have the intention to offend the cast and Asian culture because it's true that there are MANY different cultures that make up Asia and Asian-American culture is different from them too, which can be confusing for those who don't experience this cultural diversity. We should be patient and help others understand that Asian cultures are diverse, but also move on and focus the discussion back to Asian representation in the industry.
Its sort of a surprise "Hey, 4 billion people are Asian and (most) non-asian Americans have little to any idea what that means." The interviewers aren't scholars, just entertainers. They don't know what they don't know.
For all the Asians out there that are like "screw this movie it doesn't represent us" um how can one single movie portray the backgrounds and stories of every type of Asian!?
Um I think a lot of people are missing the point people are trying to make. In Singapore, multiculturalism is a core factor of the country. The national anthem of Singapore is literally written in Bahasa Melayu- the Malay language, not in Chinese. When the movie and book used Singapore as a backdrop for a story about a dysfunctional and ultra rich family (and an American-Chinese's journey in understanding South Asian values), they missed out entirely that Singaporeans are not just exclusively Chinese faces. Singaporeans are Malay, Indians, Chinese and Eurasians. We don't expect the movie to be ABOUT all South Asian races, but when they wanted to use Singapore as that backdrop for a story, they should NOT have discounted other Singaporean faces. Even having Indian and Malay wedding guests at the wedding party scene would have been good enough- because this film is showing Singapore to the world, and not correctly. Now people think that Asians=Chinese, and that Singapore=Chinese- THAT'S the issue. There is something called Chinese privilege in Singapore, and this film exemplified the height of Chinese people's privilege- to have their faces shown to the rest of the world, but not the other Singaporean races.
The problem is that it doesnt represent any actual Asians, only Asian-AMERICANs. Pundits in Singapore have written that the movie shows only the worst sides of Singapore (ethnically Chinese people tryna act white, discrimination of 'brown' minorities) and its not even clear whether this movie will be released in mainland China at all since demand is low. Lets face it, this is a movie for ABCs.
I tell people all the time: Don't wait for someone else (especially someone else who doesn't have your background, heritage, story, interests, or experiences) to come along and make something or do something you want that doesn't currently exist. You have to do it yourself. Otherwise, be prepared to wait a long time.
It's not that POC are waiting it's more that they're denied opportunities, connections, support, and resources that white men have as a given, POC are trying their hardest to make it and have their voices heard but the gate keepers are priveledged out of touch big ego white men who assume they know better than them. Ronnie making it is nothing short of a miracle because every odd was stacked against him.
I've never seen such a Chinese casual interview... food, chatter, and a nice joking attitude Asian-style. But at the same time I love the politics that you guys shouted out and what it means to have the title CRA on the silver screen. Very cool.
This movie was an excellent and great way to introduce asian culture into cinemas. The goal of the movie wasn’t to portray an authentic asian story but rather subliminally depict the expectations of asian Americans but set in a love story. Hate on it all you want, but it was a good ass movie filled with people who I look similar to and that’s all I can ask for.
I'm surprised Ronny mentioned Hmong people! Nobody really knows about us even though we've been in the states for years (since the 70's for my family)! Awesome shout out & great video btw!
twixcff Yeah it might've been hard to catch because they did the chickmunk voice lol. I wish they would've written "Hmong" on the screen like they did with all the other ethnicities too, but I guess it's all good as long as they mentioned it. Lol
bluntkrayon Yes, that movie was good! Also, one of the Hmong actors in there (the one that played the main gangster), just got casted for the new live action Mulan movie!
What I love about your guys channel is you guys are allowing people to speak and share their experience more than feeling like it's a FORCED INTERVIEW! Less than 20% talking from the Fung Bros and more than 80% listening! As for the interview on the movie, I am happy that I clicked this video because they talk a little more about life in general even where the movie does not talk about it. Of course the Asian community is too vast to hit all in ONE movie but I think this movie will do amazing wonders and open many more opportunities for other stories to be told. Kevin Kwak , the pressure is on but I still loved your books either way lol
I get that some people might be upset that this movie doesn’t portray say Vietnamese Americans or Filipino Americans but can we all just acknowledge that this is a first step. I’m chinese and I’m very proud of this movie, I’ve watched it twice already both times in theatre. This film gives great exposure to the Asian American community and that itself is a huge stepping stone for more to come in the future. Let’s all celebrate this amazing movie and uplift each other so that all stories will be told in the future.
I'm Vietnamese and I absolutely love CRA. There were a lot of commonalities between the culture of Chinese people throughout the diaspora, that I know of, and Vietnamese culture. And the movie even touched on this with the red dress detail. Not every Chinese is the same. Constance Wu's character's mother assumed her bf's parents to be traditional and hence a red dress would look good. She got it completely wrong.
Hey you guys! Let Ronny make the first sign....It's the "Shaka" sign in Hawaii, meaning....AURIGHT!, RIGHT ON!, MAHALOS! (THANKS EH!). haha. Can't wait for the Fung brothers to make it to Honolulu. Great stuff, keep up the fun videos guys!.........."SHAKA"!
Correction Ronnie,Henry is not "Orang asli" though aboriginal may directly translate to orang asli in the malay language & "Orang asli" are only found in peninsular malaysia/west malaysia, not to be confused. He is in fact from the aboriginal/native people of Sarawak which is in East Malaysia.
I went to see the film in Toronto and saw a white Canadian couple in their late 60s and 70s. They were sitting near the front and I felt so ecstatic because this film isn't only for the Asian audience, it's for everybody who loves rom-coms, cultural insights, dramedy genre, and deep, life lessons. It was brilliant in every way. Thanks to everybody who made this film possible to be seen on the big screen.
Yessss it's been crazy to watch the promo for CRA and see all this mainstream interviewers mess up and make assumptions. I appreciate you guys bringing it up!
One thing. I want to add on and kind of correct what Ronnie said. This is just good to know information :) African Americans get lumped together too. There are the Americans, Afro-latinos & English-speaking Afro-caribbean people and all their different cultures. I had an African American friend growing up and we always had debates on our differences (I'm Jamaican)--down to which vegetable is better (she says either mustard or collard greens and i say callalloo and i recommend everyone try both!). Great movie movie btw!!!!!
For me in the movie it didn’t fully represent me but it had pieces of me. The part of the movie I still can’t get over was the scene of mah jong where I knew it was a nugget meant for me meant for people who knew the game! I love that scene more than any other scene but I did love the whole movie.
I'm Filipino, and while CRA is about Chinese/Singaporeans, there's definitely things I can relate to. The Henry-Eleanor dynamic reminds me of my mom and I, and while my parents are pretty chill, I went to one of my auntie's houses and I got put through the wringer. "Why aren't you married yet?" and "When are you going to have kids?", etc. And how parents never necessarily say "I love you", but they show it in different ways. BTW just saw the movie a couple of days ago, and it is DOPE.
Forget watching late night shows, CNN, Good morning America, Ellen, or Today show interviews. The FUNG Bros interview is where you can get the REAL insider look at CRA (Crazy Rich Asians Movie). AWESOME interview. My favorite!!!!!
Dunno if anyone will read this, but to Ronny or anyone who wonders if stories exist with more diversity in ppl, with rich and poor alike and showcasing effects of colonialism in south east asia (specifically Malaysia) all in a modern context that Is Not Americanized, try Yasmin Ahmad’s work. Visionary Malaysian director who made films grown from our culture, with far more representation and realism without being boring. She passed away and it’s sad bc she was a true talent. Wow I didn't know there was a live action version of MULAN being made? My wife always cracks up when the old lady at the end of the movie says.....you can stay forever!
I would love to hear more about Scissor Seven dub work from Ronnie. It’s one of my faves, his voice acting is crazy good! Plus, the mix of mandarin and Cantonese in the original is crazy helpful in my language learning!
Yo this was a dope episode! Digging the fudz, the azn fam gang, the narrative, and the overall interview/talkshow. Looking forward to more as always. Btw Henry has some strong malay features that he actually looks like many Filipinos I've known over the years
The Crazy Rich Asians movie is about yellow and Asiatic looking people like myself. Yes, I am Chinese and Filipino. It makes me fully Asian blooded. Well, East and SouthEast Asians are both the same race because we look similar and have similar cultures. Actually, in western world Asian means poeple who have Asiatic features or look Asian like myself. But, this movie is universal when it comes to life experiences and emotions or feelings. This movie is for everyone not only for East and SouthEast Asian people. You got to remember this movie was filmed in Malaysia and Singapore which are located in SouthEast Asia. Actually, Singapore is predominantly Chinese ethnic and the main language there is Mandarin/Cantonese and Singaporean English. The history of Singapore is a rich Chinese family build the whole country and it used to be part of the British colony. Well, not only Singapore but the whole SouthEast Asia have a strong Chinese culture. The whole cast of the movie consists of Chinese, half Chinese and half Korean, Filipino, half Japanese and half British, half Malaysian and half British and Tiawanese. So, not all actors or actresses in this film are Chinese citizen because it was not filmed in China it was filmed in Singapore. For the people who do not know China is in East Asia. That is a little history and geography for you. Cheers!
@Kleco102 Well, Singapore is in SouthEast Asia where Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia as well as near South China Sea. Also, close to East Asia which consists countries like China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. I know because I am Asian genetically. By the way, I grew up in the western world too. But, I always identify myself as being Asian ethnic or genetically. You have a lot to learn about us Asian people because Chinese is not the only Asian people in this world. I do not want to spoil the movie Crazy Rich Asians, but the gay cousin of the main lead actor in that movie was a gay Filipino. The movie is about Crazy rich Chinese Asians in Singapore. But, since all the cast look Asian they did not have to hire all Chinese actors or actresses as long they look Asian. The whole cast was acting in that movie were either half Japanese and half British or half Malaysian and half British or half Chinese and half Korean or Taiwanese or Filipino since they all look Asian anyways. Also, every SouthEast Asian countries have a strong Chinese cultures and knows Majhong which is Chinese checkboard or the Chinese poker version. I know because my Filipino relatives plays it. FYI SouthEast Asians do not look Indians nor speak Indian language and are mostly Chinese Buddhist or Christians. We are close related to East Asians and look similar and have commonality in cultures.
If we are to do another Asian movie, I would want to do it on the ABC vs FOB dynamic, best if you can introduce people who have gone through a second stop (such as the VBC in the Chinese community)
ABCantonese But Asian people already are doing that in their dramas. :/ This film is more about globalization and commoners entering the international scene in masses.
Tiffany Epiphany You mean in Chinese or Korean or Japanese drama? I don't watch drama so I can't say, but I'm referring to a third movie after Joy Luck Club and CRA. Hollywood stuff that everyone would watch, not just country specific drama in Asia.
I laughed out loud when their characters were introduced, just the way he posed so stiffly and over the top. I guess no one else in the theatre thought it was funny...
Oh yeah, definitely, I'm cambodian and I felt like it covered the countries that are more balanced. Here in Cambodia, theres no in between area in the social pyramid, theres people that are in poverty and then theres people that are wayy too rich. You'd find a big ass mansion right next to a slum
Damn...Ronny has only been in America for 3 years and already has an acting career and stand up projects....his hustle game is LIT!
mixflip He is already famous in Australia.
If they had to repopulate the earth, they got the major professions covered.
His chapstick game with knee pads game is strong
Exactly, "it might not be the progress you want, but it is absolutely progress."

I love it when they show footage of the kitchen and what they're preparing for the meal
you should try some!
OPTIMAL ANGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!! For anyone who has watched the movie...
Damn the audience cracked up when he'd say that
Didn't make it into american vogue
Something about Ronny’s blatant realness that I fell I love with. He didn’t apologize for believing what he believes to be Asian Rich and crazy!
I've never seen such a Chinese casual interview... food, chatter, and a nice joking attitude Asian-style. But at the same time I love the politics that you guys shouted out and what it means to have the title CRA on the silver screen. Very cool.

Wow. Victoria Loke. I could listen to her all day talk about decolonisation. she is smart and stunning.
Ronny is way more WOKE than Andrew and David.
Combined.
Ronny is definitely way more woke, super cool and funny. The other two are still asleep.
This, yes! Ronny don’t need gang signs. (LOL)
And 1 million times more woke than Victoria
I love and 100% resonate with Ronny's mindset of if u don't like sth, do it better rather than complain, be the change u want to see in this world
Im South Asian-American and the release of Crazy Rich Asians still gave me excitement and a fervent sense of pride and belonging
I'm surprised Ronny mentioned Hmong people! Nobody really knows about us even though we've been in the states for years (since the 70's for my family)! Awesome shout out & great video btw!
LKLO 90
Nyob zoo!
I had the same thoughts and reaction. I like him even more now.
I actually had to rewind and watch Ronny mention Hmong again, was surprise he included us lol. Love Ronny! 😄
twixcff Yeah it might've been hard to catch because they did the chickmunk voice lol. I wish they would've written "Hmong" on the screen like they did with all the other ethnicities too, but I guess it's all good as long as they mentioned it. Lol
Gran Torino was about the Hmong. First I have ever heard of them. Great movie too.
bluntkrayon Yes, that movie was good! Also, one of the Hmong actors in there (the one that played the main gangster), just got casted for the new live action Mulan movie!

Asians all over the place in August 2018!!!
it was hella good!
In my family....our story would just be called "crazy Filipinos (not rich)"
Glad that Ronny mention the Hmong people!
YO RONNY GOT HIS WISH WITH THAT SHANG CHI MOVIE IN THE WORKS
This couple had some of my favorite parts. It's great to know that a lot of it was improved.

Some Malaysian guy beat me to it. :-P
Henry's mother is from Sarawak, East of Malaysia. The biggest tribe in Sarawak is the Iban people. Not Orang Asli.
matthew chua thanks Matthew for the correction; Henry is part Iban, an indigenous tribe from Sarawak, Borneo 😀 (East Malaysia)
shout out to my people, the Hmongs. look it up
alexhoncho123 whoa that’s different
Egg+noodles=amazing
Eew, raw eggs? Disgusting!
Ronny Chieng is the first Asian-American in media I relate to almost 100%
I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video. I grew up with several Japanese and Chinese friends back in the 70’s and love Asian culture
Kudos to Ronny on the hmong shout out
i laughed! Love it!
Wow! Ronny is lightin' up the scene with only 3 years in America! His career has jumped off well!
Ronnie and Victoria's backstories were awesome and the subtlety in their couple dynamic stood out! Esp the interrupting-each-other part
Thanks for mentioning the hmong people! :)
I heard that. Almost missed it because it had to be fast-forwarded.
yes the hmong people, ronny thanks for the shout out.

Homies said the Hmong people!! Thanks bro!! We hear tho!!!
That resturant actually looks dope and fresssh. I would love to dine there next time Im in NY
Ronny is great!!! The food looks amazing. Also Victoria Loke wow. Loved the movie
Looking at these fine young Asians in America, the future of Asian Americans are bright.
Absolutely LOVE the movie.... from a Korean American !!!
Content that I subscribed for. Thanks Fung Bros!
No hate to CRA, everything is contextual, and AsAms have a really different relationship to race and representation compared to local Asians, and maybe CRA appeals and is more relatable to AsAms.
Yeah it's hard to try to cover everything in one film. Instead, try to have more films about all the aspects of Asia.
Wow I didn't know there was a live action version of MULAN being made? My wife always cracks up when the old lady at the end of the movie says.....you can stay forever!
Luv this interview. These conversations are long over due I’m glad watching and wishing I could eat some crab 🦀 noodle 🍲😊
It like “Yes, I’ll totally go pirate Ronny’s TV show!”
Yo... she's smart, driven, talented, and beautiful... You do you!
This is so cool to see some of the back story with CRA. "Fiona" doesn't have any speaking lines in the movie! They're so down to earth!!
6:41 Ronny: "the Hmong people"
Frs??? Lit.
3-4 Chinese people discussing wide asian representation in film is super helpful thanks
I would love to hear more about Scissor Seven dub work from Ronnie. It’s one of my faves, his voice acting is crazy good! Plus, the mix of mandarin and Cantonese in the original is crazy helpful in my language learning!
This is definitely the hangover menu, I would never contemplate eating all that together in one sitting🤣🤣🤣
Chu are you?
I loved Crazy Rich Asians! i suggest everyone watch it especially if you liked "Coming to America"
Hope the sequels have more ronny and Victoria. In the books, the former later serves as an antagonist of sorts
As a Cambodian, I was grateful for the small shout out in the movie CRA. :)
Ronny needs to be on 24/7
Yo this was a dope episode! Digging the fudz, the azn fam gang, the narrative, and the overall interview/talkshow. Looking forward to more as always. Btw Henry has some strong malay features that he actually looks like many Filipinos I've known over the years

Shout out to Victoria Loke and Ronny for speaking OUT!

Love it! Candid and real conversations
Don't forget to also watch "to all the boys I've loved before" on Netflix! Asian American lead!
Good video, and Pinch, all of that food looked good. I wish I was in NY.
