Thanks Tom. My grandfather has aged to the point where he can't take care of his rural lands as he should so I need to drive around my family's property and record video so that they can all see what is overgrown and needs to be tended to. I've learned a lot watching this particular video. Thumbs UP!!
For all of you wondering if you can just take the phone with you: Yes, that is possible (Android only) but a little complicated. What you need is a second phone with GPS. There are GPS routing apps available that you can set up. This way, you take one phone in your pocked, that phone records the GPS and sends it to the second phone. The second phone is connected to the RC and uses the GPS data from the phone in your pocked. Hope that helps... Safe flight!
Can I make the quadcopter fly in front of my position? - like when I am sailing my boat I would like footage of the boat from the front moving forwards through the water...
Good video but you didn't talk about the distance function that is available with the right stick ! With the right stick you can control the distance between you and the quadcopter
thanx for the tutorial, but what would happen if the copter is following u and u climbed a hill ? will it keep the altitude 10m from u or it will stay in the previous altitude ?
Thank you good Tom. Can you instruct the drone to follow your phone or must if film the big controller device in your hands. Or is there an optional add on so you don't have to film the actor which such a huge device?
One thing that was not covered is - does it maintain the original altitude or maintain the original distance from controller? So, if going downhill - will it stay at the original altitude?
I am looking into buying a Dji Phantom 3 and need to buy a tablet to go along with it. I would like to be able to use the Follow me mode which leads me to ask you which tablet did you use when doing the "how to use follow-me mode"
Great tutorial, thank you for posting, planning on using the follow me mode to be able to film some neighborhoods so will be experimenting with speed, height and gimbal angle to keep the vehicle out of the shot...any advise?
hello, what do you recommend in order to follow a Stand up paddle surfer in the sea... which mode i should choose...free fly , follow me or waypoints mode? the follow me mode is necessary to follow a person that keeps in his hand remote controller, is that right?
Hello , congratulations on the channel , I am unable to activate follow me function of the following error: No sensor is found on the mobile device.Cannot integrate IMU data. What is the problem ?
Tom, Can the Phantom 4 be programed to follow the ground terrain while filming? I would like it to stay the same height from the ground as the surface changes.
With the newest update to the DJI app there is now a button that appears on the left side of the screen to access the follow me feature. So, toggle F-mode, hit button on left side of screen under the auto-land & auto-takeoff, agree to terms of follow me stuff, then happy flying!
That was nice how did you record the actual DJI GO app screen ..? Thumbs up from me, I'm waiting for the w/x to improve so that I can go out and fly :)
What's the go with step 3 ? It says after take off toggle the mode switch from p to f mode......my remote controller doesn't have that, its a standard 3 phantom
hey Tom, can you tell me this. I have to get shots of a bot sailing which i'll be on, can I use follow me manually as I want frontal shots of boat, also does this mean I don't need to worry about return to home as i'll be on the sea? ta
if you are finish with follow me and set it back to p and press home what happens? Where do the drone fly to ?? back to Start position ? or to remote control?
Wonderful work Tom, as always. Very impressed with the quality of your videos and the information provided. Simple and right to the point. You are a young guy with a promising future, be sure.
Hoping you can answer. When using in follow me mode, you said you have to work the gimbal yourself. But, the camera will always stay pointed at the subject, correct?
The way I understood it the drone is supposed to stay at one altitude while following you. So if you're going up and down (like, on a motocross-track) you have to control the gimbal for that.
Great video., I really enjoy watching and learning from your videos. Question for you. I have a IPad 3 mini wifi version only. If i toggle my android phone to be a hot spot with GPS on, can I use my phone as a link to the Ipad in order for the DJI P3 to follow me?. Thanks, Rick
+Rick Kremer I thought of that question as well already, but didn't test that yet. I think because the positioning of the Phantom mainly depends on location services (as GPS and Glonass) it won't work out well, but maybe you can give it a try and report here or on Facebook (facebook.com/groups/tomstechtime)? Stay tuned and fly safe!
hello. phantom4) : when is in follow me mode with a remote or the TX, do the phantom also change the altitude if the follow people go down or climb somethinG? is the phatom follow in altitude too? thank you.
I have a DJI Phantom 3 Standard, but that does not work for the standard. If you walk ok, but don't get a tree between, you lose connection and the Follow mode will not work anymore. I tried with a new Galaxy A5 and a boat, that same day I tested walking, no problem, but with the boat the drone went crazy, it flew 50 meters back, then it came at high speed at me, then it flew to the left and right and all the time I was not moving?? The day before I tested with the boat and a iPhone 6 plus and it followed me for some seconds and lost connection. For the standard a strange function because of the standard bad connection, GPS and Radio are weak.
Hello Tom, appreciate your tutorials and great information. My suggestion which hopefully this turn out to be good comments for your viewers and for yourself. First, the sunglasses on your head have to be removed. 2nd, speak at the normal speed. You don’t want your audience to be dazzled on chasing your talk. Pause at the end of your sentences and in this way won’t appear mumbled. Hope this helps.
No, that only works with point-of-interest or pre-set routes. You could, though, have it follow you, end that mode, fly a circle around you, and re-start follow me mode.
Hey So I have a P3P and tried the follow me mode with a Samsung Tab 10.1 and it sat there for a minute and then tried to haul ass away. Checked all the IMU Compass ect... everything was calibrated & linked but for some reason the GPS signal is weak? How would I correct this? I turned off all wifi and data and the GPS still worked, so I'm assuming that I have a GPS transponder inside of the Samsung Tab 10.1, any help would be great TOM, thx
N'th DEGREE DRONE when you switch modes it is switching from P-GPS (which stands for position GPS) to F-GPS (which stands for function GPS). It still stays very stable
Hi Tom, I was wondering for example, let's say that I'm on a boat that is moving. On P-GPS mode the home position will be were I took off. But If I switch to F-Mode and activate the Follow Me function, do you think that the Home position will keep updating to were I currently be? and then when I need to land I could stop the boat and switch back to P-GPS and to get the quad closer to me press the RTH button then cancel the RTH and land it by myself? What do you think? I know is a bit risky but I think I could take wonderful and nice images of were we are sailing. BTW, your tutorials are the best! I always look at them before flying. Thanks a lot! Regards from Argentina. Martin.
+Martin Sadofschi The Home Point will simply move with you if you choose "My Position". But take care. If the connection brakes down, it might land behind you. But in most cases, if it comes close, you could take control and land it yourself. Stay tuned and fly safe!
+Tom's Tech Time ohh great! good idea! I've now found that if you press the bubble "H" on the screen controller you can change the home possition to: - Where the aircraft currently is - Where the controller is right now (GPS needed) Regards! Martin
Lets say your skiing downhill, with the controller and everything in your hand, and you set the altitude to 15m, will it allways be 15 m above the ground following you downhill?
+Brian Dodds This is because of the location update rate in combination with connection to remote. You'd think that 10x per second would be enough for a smooth pan but apparently not. I'm sure it will get better in future updates though.
+André Lundin I tested this mode on my P3A and had the same results. I also however had it fly away into a hillside. I really don't think the follow me mode is ready for prime time.
+Tom's Tech Time Hey Tom, why exactly do we need to make sure we have GPS on our device(phone, tablet), just the reason why.... the "follow me" mode uses the GPS unit in the RC of the P3 to follow...? And of course : fly safe!
+nikanim Because the Phantom 3 follows the GPS co-ordinates of your phone and tries to keep the distance between it's own GPS co-ordinates and your phones co-ordinates the same, that's how the follow me function works; it follows the gps co-ordinates of your phone.
Great Video, I really appreciate it! Can you help me maybe? I can NEVER get mine to work on my Phantom 3 PRO.... It always says ""Weak GPS signal"" even with 16+ satellites on the drone and good cell coverage. Any suggestions? Thanks!
+Soulztooth hi guys! Got the same problem! What device u using? What is ur position , basically where do u fly?! I'm using iphone 6s plus. And ,how i understand , there is no chances to catch enough good GPS signal in town or around. Even if u go on the hill... But i still want to hear , any another versions of that problem! Many 10x's to author for video lesson , much useful and easy to understand
The Phantom 4 does not use the device for the follow me mode function. It tracks the color of the pixels of the object that your following. The only DJI Phantom that uses the devices GPS or Positioning Module are the Phantom 3's.
Great Video! I am seriously thinking about ordering one of the DJI Phantom Drones. I love the quality of the videos... I hope its not really hard to get a hang of...
If there are obstacles, set the altitude high enough to avoid them, or have it take a path that doesn't cross the obstacles (for example, in a sub-urban street, have it fly along the road.
It will work on any iPhone supported by the app because all iPhones 3gs and up have built in GPS. He only referenced the iPad Mini 2 cellular because the cellular model has a GPS chip built in but the non cellular version does not.
and i was going to get the apple mini 2 for my p4 good thing i didnt get it yet cause if the follow me dont work cause it doesnt have built in gps then it doesnt help me

Tom's Tech Time what app did u used?
Thanks Tom. The printed text and "hints" to the left are great. Do you have these available in PDF or know where I can find them?
Can I make the quadcopter fly in front of my position? - like when I am sailing my boat I would like footage of the boat from the front moving forwards through the water...
ColGadarby I was thinking of the same thing. Like Lily Drone's "Lead Mode". I was also hoping it can also do a "loop mode" as well.
Hi, use course lock and zoom ahead of yourself?
Good video but you didn't talk about the distance function that is available with the right stick ! With the right stick you can control the distance between you and the quadcopter
+Colin Cleary Excellent point.
+Colin Cleary can you explain this to me?
+Colin Cleary good tip
at after 5:50, can you make it navigate left and right, like you're doing a wakesurfing, and let the drone cover you from left and right?
If you use the Internet wifi 3 g on the iPad mini 3 does interfere with the phantom ? Thanks
I enjoy your lectures on drone and how to fly it safely. I read a topic daily and practice it.
thanx for the tutorial, but what would happen if the copter is following u and u climbed a hill ? will it keep the altitude 10m from u or it will stay in the previous altitude ?
Drone fallows you only if you have the remote or you can set up to fallow someone else?
wanted to know how you can get the dji to circle around you in follow me mode
You have so much energy. Do you take any controlled substances?
Thank you good Tom. Can you instruct the drone to follow your phone or must if film the big controller device in your hands. Or is there an optional add on so you don't have to film the actor which such a huge device?
Hey Tom,
If you were to use the sticks to circle the car will the camera still follow by rotating the copter?
Can you still use yaw while in follow me mode? (toggle left and right of the left stick) Thanks!
One thing that was not covered is - does it maintain the original altitude or maintain the original distance from controller? So, if going downhill - will it stay at the original altitude?

Is this the pro or standard phantom tested in this video?
this is like the best tutorials eva! good hud! explaining what is happning . good job mate
is this feature in the standard version of the Phantom 3
Have you tried this with the Phantom 4? It works differently for me than the 3 did.
Have you managed to get the FM to work on the Phantom4
hello, what do you recommend in order to follow a Stand up paddle surfer in the sea... which mode i should choose...free fly , follow me or waypoints mode? the follow me mode is necessary to follow a person that keeps in his hand remote controller, is that right?
very nice video, thumbs up! Could you please share which app you have used to capture the ipad screen? Or was this simply through hdmi-out?
Hello , congratulations on the channel , I am unable to activate follow me function of the following error:
No sensor is found on the mobile device.Cannot integrate IMU data.
What is the problem ?
Can I use the follow me feature even though I'm on beginner mode?
this is NOT for Phantom 4. The app icons and software is totally different.
hi tom, why do I always lose the live video monitor on my tab? am only 50m away from the copter?
very informative,i just got the p4 I wander if the fallow me mode is the same as the p3,Tom keep up the good work,Happy Flying!!!
Tom,
Can the Phantom 4 be programed to follow the ground terrain while filming? I would like it to stay the same height from the ground as the surface changes.

I can't find follow me for my Professional in the DJI App
That was nice how did you record the actual DJI GO app screen ..? Thumbs up from me, I'm waiting for the w/x to improve so that I can go out and fly :)
AZ screen recorder
Now the sound is working.
Good tutorial.
Does this work with the phantom 3 standard?
is the music distorted?
What's the go with step 3 ? It says after take off toggle the mode switch from p to f mode......my remote controller doesn't have that, its a standard 3 phantom
I did not find this feature on my spark, can youbplz tell how to activate it and what is difference between the active track and follow me?
Well done! I was not confident enough to try this earlier today, I feel more educated now to try.
do i therefore have to have a phone with a sim card and internet?
when I try the follow me mode it says cant find the imu sensor so what do I need to do to get follow me mode to work on my phantom 3 standard?
hey Tom, can you tell me this. I have to get shots of a bot sailing which i'll be on, can I use follow me manually as I want frontal shots of boat, also does this mean I don't need to worry about return to home as i'll be on the sea? ta
hi tom...this is salman.
do you have only phantom quadcopters?
thanks reply
if you are finish with follow me and set it back to p and press home what happens? Where do the drone fly to ?? back to Start position ? or to remote control?
the following mode and point interest works with samsung s6 edge?
phantom 3 stabdard have also? and advance?
If a Phantom falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
yes
lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Yes the sound of my wallet crying!
King Parodije my teacver asked me the same question.
hi i have got a problem i have a strong gps signal but then it tell weak gps signal what do i need to do?

great job again. your first videos were good but you are clearly getting better!!
Hi Tom,
does the follow me work different on phantom 3 standard?
hello.
phantom4) : when is in follow me mode with a remote or the TX, do the phantom also change the altitude if the follow people go down or climb somethinG? is the phatom follow in altitude too?
thank you.
i subscribed & liked your video :) i have a DJI spark but i cant find the intelli fly modes (or advanced settings)
Are you in Germany?
Is dynamic home point enabled for this? One would not want the Phantom to return to the take off point when that could be miles away.....
+Palak Desai That is answered in the video, yes.
I have a DJI Phantom 3 Standard, but that does not work for the standard. If you walk ok, but don't get a tree between, you lose connection and the Follow mode will not work anymore. is 'home' constantly relocating in follow me mode? cuz that's what i see from the map. any one?

Why is your drone constantly updating home location? Seems kind of unsafe...
while you messing with flight modes is the copter still locked in GPS mode or will it drift with wind as soon as you flip your switches?
That's actually a really good question that could do with an answer. Tom do you know the answer to this please?
N'th DEGREE DRONE when you switch modes it is switching from P-GPS (which stands for position GPS) to F-GPS (which stands for function GPS). It still stays very stable
Scooty Man q
Really enjoy your tutorials on the P3P! Keep up the good work!
is this dji go or dji go 4
hey dude,,, wassup!!! listen,, any chance on uploading videos on P4 and some how to enable active tracking ?
Thank you for making these fantastic videos! They are always very professionally done and informative. Keep up the great work!
So, what iPad are you using for your controller??? The manual says you CANNOT use unless you have cellular on your iPad...
Jack Quinn Dennis I think you just answered your own question. You'll need an iPad that is both wifi and cellular. Only the cellular iPads have gps.
New phantom user..these are well done videos. Keep up the good work!
Phantom 3 Avanced gimbal dial work. How do I fix?
How would I use the iPad Pro in the field if I don't have wifi for follow me ?? Can someone tell me?
Sam Saleh wifi isn't necessary, but a cellular enabled device is. GPS works off of the satellites and cell towers.

Thanks brother, I love the side notes during your instructional video. Very helpful.
Lets say your skiing downhill, with the controller and everything in your hand, and you set the altitude to 15m, will it allways be 15 m above the ground following you downhill?
No. It won't adjust for altitude in the DJI Go app. 3rd party apps can, as long as your phone has a barometer to measure changes in your level.
Awesome video man. I will try it tomorrow
Looks like the copter pans in that mode are kind of bouncing and not smooth... ???
+Brian Dodds This is because of the location update rate in combination with connection to remote. You'd think that 10x per second would be enough for a smooth pan but apparently not. I'm sure it will get better in future updates though.
+André Lundin I tested this mode on my P3A and had the same results. I also however had it fly away into a hillside. I really don't think the follow me mode is ready for prime time.
+Brian Dodds Yeah. Must say that the 3DR Solo has this perfected. Hope they get it same with the Phantom 3
Does the tablet need to have gps installed , when you have gps on the RC unit?
+nikanim Yes, Sir. Your mobile device needs GPS / Glonass. Stay tuned and fly safe!
+Tom's Tech Time Hey Tom, why exactly do we need to make sure we have GPS on our device(phone, tablet), just the reason why.... the "follow me" mode uses the GPS unit in the RC of the P3 to follow...? And of course : fly safe!

the Controller doesn't have GPS, when setting your home point before lift off the Phantom uses the GPS in the Aircraft to set a home point
Can You Do This With P3 Standard? Also Great Video!
Hi Tom! is it possible to "follow the drone" using Follow me mode? I mean "pushing the drone". thanks
+Arraial HD Sorry, but I don't really get your question?! Stay tuned!
Thanks, Stefan. Well, you can position the Phantom freely. But of course it is going to look the smoothest, if the drone follows you... ;)
Thank you guys.
Great Video, I really appreciate it! Can you help me maybe? I can NEVER get mine to work on my Phantom 3 PRO.... It always says ""Weak GPS signal"" even with 16+ satellites on the drone and good cell coverage. Any suggestions? Thanks!
+Soulztooth
hi guys! Got the same problem! What device u using? What is ur position , basically where do u fly?! I'm using iphone 6s plus. And ,how i understand , there is no chances to catch enough good GPS signal in town or around. Even if u go on the hill...

+Soulztooth
HI again. Find out a problem !
Everything working well, just need to find open location and make sure that is no clouds!
Be tuned!
The Phantom 4 does not use the device for the follow me mode function. It tracks the color of the pixels of the object that your following. The only DJI Phantom that uses the devices GPS or Positioning Module are the Phantom 3's.
Can you adjust the altitude while in this mode (higher or lower?)
+Angeelo Gov That is answered in the video, yes.
anyone able to help me here? everything I try the follow me mode it says the aircraft is too far away but it's the right distance and all
Ich frage mich ob dein accent Deutsch is?
Awesome tutorial - Very intuitive & easy to follow instructions
Seems like a pretty cool feature! Can't wait to try it out
Absolutely love your tutorials tom, thanks
I can't set up follow me mode at all it always has weak signal what could bo wrong
Great Video! I am seriously thinking about ordering one of the DJI Phantom Drones. I love the quality of the videos... I hope its not really hard to get a hang of...
what happens if objects are in the way? say if you were in a suburban setting does it have the ability to avoid hitting a house or building?
+Cameron Gray no
If there are obstacles, set the altitude high enough to avoid them, or have it take a path that doesn't cross the obstacles (for example, in a sub-urban street, have it fly along the road.
Thanks for the tutorial man. Helps out quite a bit.
good work man....tremendously helpfull !!! keep the good work
So this doesn't work for an iPhone 6 s plus? Only an iPad mini 2?
It will work on any iPhone supported by the app because all iPhones 3gs and up have built in GPS. He only referenced the iPad Mini 2 cellular because the cellular model has a GPS chip built in but the non cellular version does not.
and i was going to get the apple mini 2 for my p4 good thing i didnt get it yet cause if the follow me dont work cause it doesnt have built in gps then it doesnt help me
such a nice place to drive and filming
i thought my antennas must be visible to my copter?
Great video! very well demonstrated and explained. Thanks.
