    Looks like you've finally gotten a taste for what the S2000 can be and you're talking about giving up?! Zygrene-san?! You can't complain that your S2000 isn't the ultimate track weapon if you haven't been building it to be one... Examples include: Jeff has removed quite a bit of his interior versus your car, you're using Ohlin's DFV coilovers (great compromise but definitely not 100% track focused), he's running R compound tires, you don't have a BBK, etc.
    I think you should take a step back and realize that you should use Jeff's car as inspiration for what you'd like your S2000 to be!!! At least that's what I'm doing (2003 Silverstone owner)... Just to give you an example I'd like to do (and have already done quite a few) all of the mods that Jeff did but a little bit differently... I'm thinking about using Group A or Shine Auto replica Voltex aero, Feal 443 coilovers, KAAZ differential, etc. I'm hoping I get even more performance than Jeff at a fraction of the price! Remember the S2000 is your canvas that you can shape and modify to your heart's content without fear or guilt.
    “Please take good care of your S2000, keep it by your side for long and enjoy it from the bottom of your heart. And share the quality and legacy of the S2000 with many friends so that the legend of the S2000 will continue for long.”

      PS - (no harm meant) I think you worry too much about the latest and greatest and don't focus on the most important mod of them all, the driver mod. Take a step back and appreciate your amazing fleet of cars and the experiences you have had in them.
      As far as a tire recommendation why not go with something like the Bridgestone RE71R? Yeah it's not the BEST OF THE BEST but it's a phenomenal tire and quite possibly the greatest grip/dollar tire out there (besides the Federal 595RS-RR's maybe?). A052 if you really need the best of the best I suppose... Kevin Burke just won using those tires at the recent Gridlife event in SoCal: kevinburkeracing.com/2019/02/19/gridlife-streets-special-track-battle/

      @@ericmwalsh my only issue with RE71R is that it doesn't last a full 20 min session. I'm more concerned with consistency than outright grip. I think NT01 will be the best option for the money. But anyways... yeah. I'm pretty sure I will keep the S2000. I was on the fence for months but you've just done a pretty damn good job pushing me over the edge.

    Don’t forget bushings! Simple but transformative. Definitely a fresh set of tires and an updated, but not necessarily big brake setup.
    The Honda HPD guys run the Nasa/SCCA nationals with only minor changes to the car so there is more speed to be had without breaking the bank.

    NT01 and JRZ/MCS, it's a magic combo :) Even on JRZ 1-way non-remote the suspension enables curb hopping with minimal bouncing. Transitions with 15/24 clicks all around and 550/800 springs on my E92 M3 are amazing too.

    After I did a flashtune - by Gernby - the engine characteristic felt very diffferent- in a positive manner. I can't imagine having to drive the car with the stock tune. I had to flash it back to the factory tune for smog and it felt like poo.

    Nice Video...Good job on driving the car at the limit. Couple of thoughts. Your on target with tires. I am not familiar with Federals but I have experience with R888's. They have amazing grip and last a long time. There are recommendations by others to use NT01's and they are a great tire as well. Another option is the BFG Rivals. Many of the top competitors in the Optima series use them. The tires will help to a large extent with lateral grip. The next item would be sway bars and camber plates. You need to be able to dial in more Neg camber and adjustable sway bars will help to dial out the Oversteer / Understeer issues. Back to tires...You said you want tires that will be consistent for a 20min session. The biggest problem with tires getting greasy is the cold pressure settings you start the session. As hard as you are pushing the tires in this video your are exceeding the optimal hot pressures and losing grip.(GETTING GREASY) You need to start your cold pressure settings about 7 PSI below your target hot pressures then check the PSI when you return to the paddock. If they have exceeded the Hot Target settings reduce the pressure to the hot settings. Might take a session or two but once dialed in you should be good to go. Last observation.....You have a nice wing on the rear of the car but I don't see a front splitter. If that is the case you are out of balance with respect to your aerodynamics. Too much downforce on the rear is lightening the front end reducing your grip and inducing understeer.
    PS. Some Miata guys swap to LS3's for a little more grunt...Just Sayin.

    Depends whether you are chasing ultimate lap times or just want a fun car. Also do you prefer a built or bought solution. You can spend time and money developing the s2k or buy a quicker base depending on budget and whether or not you like a project.
    Mods to make your car quicker:
    tyres: Yokoham AO52's, Toyo R888r, Nangkang AR-1, Dunlop Dz03g or forget semi-slicks all together and go for full slicks. Also try increasing the cars footprint, go up 10% or more tyre width all round?
    Chassis: polybushes or rose joints, Increased spring rate for your coilovers, pillowball top mounts. More aggressive aero, weight reduction
    Transmission: replace helical atb diff with a more aggressive plate diff. Short ratio gearbox or shorter final drive.
    Brakes: BBK won't help laptimes much, but will improve laptime stability
    power: do this last , tuning N/A engines is expernsive and doesn't make a huge difference, you said it yourself, no chance against the V8's .
    Or just buy a catheram/lotus/radical and tune that to a whole other level

  • @hlakhani

    I think you just need better, fresh tires (keeping it 200 TW) and more time on this track. I’ve seen stock s2000s with tires and brakes run great times (though admittedly sketchy drives) and it still looks like you’l could shave off a bit more time with your existing setup.
    Your tires got worse through the session but the car seemed looser than it ought to be considering the BAW you have mounted. Maybe consider adjusting alignment and suspension slightly to deal with the oversteer?
    I’d vote to keep the car and avoid the urge to keep doing major upgrades. You can increase the terminal grip and lower your track times, but will that be more fun or make you a better driver?

  • @haaake
    @haaake 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Definitely stick with it, you have plenty of time to gain even with the car in it's current state. Thunderhill is one of those tracks where there is massive time to gain in nearly every corner once you learn how to take advantage of the whole track.
    Mostly the tires and weight difference. RE71R are amazing for the price but NT01 and A052 should give you more time per session in their ideal temp range. Proper tune will definitely be noticeable. Do you know what spring rates Jeff was running on his JRZs? It seems like your car has mild understeer that leads to mild oversteer on exit of some corners.

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I can definitely shave 3 or 4 seconds with driver mod alone. More consistent tires -> more seat time. I'm having to greatly adjust my driving toward the end of each session because my Federals fall off. I have my eye on NT01. A052 is probably a bit faster but I'm not sure the premium is worth it for me right now. Jeff is running something like 13k/12k. He said he wasn't exactly sure.

    I think you should stick with it, sure better cars exist but I think the S2000 will keep you challenged for longer. Build it slowly and it can last you years. I dare not drive Jeff's car or any of the Gary's cars though, I don't want that hanging over me lol. Think I'll do spoon rigid collar set and Spherical next on my car, then sway bar, diff. I use Nt01 right now and they have been very consistent they aren't the fastest tire though just very consistent.

    If you really really want to start building Corvettes, Caymans, Nissan 370Z Nismo’s, Lotus’s, Alpines or TT RS/M4/AMG’s I mean go for it. Or if you really want the new Supra.
    Those cars have more horsepower plain and simple than any NA S2000, BRZ/FRS/GT86, Fiat/Miata. Maybe you could look for a more go-karty inertia or momentum based track with much shorter straights. On those tracks hp matters much less but no matter how great your car is it won’t do well with those poor tires.
