  • Every part of a custom van build presents you with decisions to be made. Your thought process will dictate your outcome. Keep it simple. Keep it elegant.

This video warrants two comments. Lay-people (self-included) are in awe as to how lighting layers (direct, indirect) and surface materials set a scene and impart a mood. It looks like magic.
Was watching a documentary on TH-cam 'The Making of Cleopatra' and the director of photography (Leon Shamroy) delayed shooting of the outdoor scenes in Rome for 6 months because he felt he could not get the right lighting for the critical scenes of the film. What looked good enough to a lay-person was unacceptable to him.
Humble Road cinematographer George provides a short-class on lighting and scene management. Thank you so much for 8:39 - 11:45.

You Sir, are an ARTISAN! Not just a craftsman. Not just a designer or simply an entrepreneur/builder. Your attention to detail is what keeps me coming back for more. I'd buy a van from you if I could... in a heartbeat... if I had more resources than I do now. The most I can hope for is to emulate your attention to detail in my "someday" build.

I think we should call you Professor, or in Italian Professore. 🤓. You’re always so generous in the sharing of your knowledge. I love the time lapse part of the video because we subscribers get to sense hanging out with you. Man I would love to be your helper. I’ve no construction skills but can follow instructions well. Lol. But seriously as your business picks up I’m sure you’ll need to hire a helper. I spent 5 hours today cutting and sanding 2x4’s for a project that I barely made a dent on. And my project is only a game for an outdoor party. I still need to finish and paint the pieces. I was thinking about your roof and all that cutting, sanding, and painting. All the cutting of the thinsulate, the noico, reflective etc. I’m sure many a potential DIY future van builder would jump at the chance to be your helper for free. If I lived closer I sure would. Not so much for the ability to build my own van, because frankly that’s way beyond me, but to be able to contribute to a master piece would be extremely rewarding. Keep up the awesome work and like another subscriber said yes I’m feeling lucky cuz another episode of Humble Road aired❤️🐝

Along with skills, they would learn about the integrity of doing quality work, the satisfaction of creating something useful and functional, and the joy of making the world a more beautiful space to live in. Then they could run for office and improve our political situation.

I'm really glad you touched a little on lighting. In the old days when I use to make videos under another username, I only had a light behind my camera that made my every scrape, pimple, boil, or wrinkle really stand out on my face. Now I know I need to soften the light, and perhaps not only have the light in front of me, but at different angles behind me, but out of the frame of the shot to reduce the distorted bright features of my face due to the overpowering light. I know what the hell I'm trying to say, but doing a very poor way of explaining it. lol. This was an awesome video.

Love the lesson about 'shot setup'; a lot of thought and expertise goes into each one of your videos (are they videos?..... or do you call them something else?). Thought more about the ceiling. How many hours and hours do you think went into that? From thinking/planning/dreaming, measuring, cutting, planing, routing, sanding, cleaning/tack cloth, painting, sanding, waxing, fitting, installing,.... it's kind of mind-boggling.

Crazy? Like a fox I'd say! But now that you mention boats I would like to pick your brain a bit. We have a 24 foot pontoon boat and the seats are needing some work. After watching your video on this van build, I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to redo the seat frames with the 80-20 aluminum. It seems like it would weigh less than the current wood frames and I wouldn't have to worry about it rotting out again. Any thoughts on it?

Absolutely! And check out their "adding motion" section on the website. You could very easily make a seat that faces fore or aft using their pivot components. I warn you, 8020 is VERY expensive! But I love it!

Are there not LED wireless lighting systems that are battery operated, where each component has its own battery? Would eliminate the need for wiring and there would be no draw on the house batteries. Thinking of a couple of stick-em LED lights that we have that seem to last forever with a small lithium battery. Aren't there systems like that?

Certainly to be considered. The 12v puck lights I chose pull 3 watts each. The battery powered puck kits don't mention output, nor consumption. My guess is they would not be bright enough for this van. Expectations are high.

Hi George, how do you mount the pine wood behind the sheet metal for the wall to attach to?

Once sized to fit, insert and use C- clamps on each side to hold the piece in place.
