Interpretation; seems most folk completely miss the meaning behind the lyrics. The track has another title; 'Living Vicariously', & may be better described by a phrase from the song itself; 'Psychological Warfare'. It's about a world-wide psychological warfare between a few men (old dude in a wheel chair) & the slave masses (represented by those under his control). So the one singing the words is standing strong - outside the visuals - growing stronger by refusing to 'stand down', which is what he would be doing by joining the system of manipulation by the slave-master over the masses of mindless slaves. An outstanding song with incredibly intelligent lyrics by a most relevant band!
I think the lyrics and the video are open to various interpretations... wich is even better. The video is not that clear to me... because, in the end of video, the only person with a face (the old man/lady with Matt's mask) becomes faceless and de-personified as the mass, and actually seems to become their leader? Considering also what lyrics suggests ("I'm playing you at your own game") I have seen all this as a history of a spiral of violence, in which the victim becomes the new executioner.
@@gretarosati_ph You didn't recognise the old creepy guy in the wheelchair was always the puppet-master over his obedient slaves? Yes he ends up with a mask also, because his ultimate purpose is to be seen as one of the slaves. But that is nothing more than an illusion that he has created - to remain obscure (as one of the many) when he is clearly the puppet-master over the masses. That is as far as the visuals are concerned at least, yet you really need to include the lyrics in any interpretation of the song overall. The line 'I'm playing you at your own game', is a reference to the only way to win - by being aware of the dirty tricks being played upon the masses.
@@Keepnhonest Yes, he's definitely controlling them, but I'm still not 100% convinced that's all, because also the fact he's on a stage with all of the cables going behind him may suggest that (apparently) he originally is the puppet... looks like a puppet in front of an audience. He seems to enter into scene as a victim and to exit as a executioner, or maybe he's faking it as you suggest. I'm still not sure about it. :)
