    Shoulda mowed it again too collect the rest of the sand particles on top. Then rolled again, when we try to go to the next level for speed we double verticut, mowed, brush with a pull behind brush and then roll. The mower was at 125 and we lowered to 120 also.

      For our major tournament at my course we cut our greens at .90 twice, then rolled them twice. They were insanely fast. My sup is a beast and has gotten pretty smart about keeping the greens low and quick

    Steve, you've got a beautiful green with or without sand, it's amazing, you obviously take great care of it. I admire your dedication pal. Randy being the Assistant Greenkeeper made me laugh, assistants do some work. I expected you to say you were the Director of Golf or Course Manager ! I love vids like this, it's great to see what goes into it (I know it's only a small part of it we see). It's also great to see you two go at each other too, you're so funny. However, for the return to TH-cam to be complete, I need to hear your Mum laughing her head off at you in the background, always brings a big smile to my face when I hear her laugh ! Hello to Mrs Smith, the real hero of the family for putting up with you all !

    I work at a country club. My boss was also a volunteer for the greenscrew at the US Open in Brookline. Just a couple tips I can add:
    -Your dad is right about the trim height on the mower. 0.150 is pretty long if you want it as fast as possible. When we grew in a new practice green this year we started at 0.150. As the playing surface began to mature and we did a lot of top dressing and rolling we worked our way down incrementally to 0.120, which is the course standard.
    -Double cutting will help reduce the height further and improve consistency. We usually get away with making a single cut but cutting twice is a must if we host competitive play.
    -Our course makes the second cut perpendicular to the first cut. This makes the second cut a little difficult as it's hard to see your lines. At the Open the trimmers would make a single pass and immediately turn 180 to cut the pass again. This way the finished product has no visible lines (apparently they *really* hated lines).
    -you can be generous with topdressing, just make sure it's spread well and you give the green some time (2-3 months) in between applications so it can properly settle and not suffocate the grass.
    -The greens at the US Open were cut at 0.100, typically getting cut four times a day (doublecut in the morning and evening). The USGA reps were getting stimp readings in excess of 14 and some cutting and rolling had to be reduced on certain holes to bring it down to 12-13. Cutting this low is not recommended, especially not for an extended period of time as this will hurt the grass.

    crazy idea.... do you have any type of generator? I think it would be too far from the house for extension cords to work.... The sunjoe and greenworks electric verticutters are really affordable.... there is a battery option on amazon, i think it was greenworks for about $200ish.... Seen several lawn guys do videos showing a electric version bought on facebook marketplace used for like $30.

    I would recommend doing a double cut and role. Cut exactly how you did the first time then the opposite angle as the first cut. Roll it them top dress and brush in the sand. See how that will work. That’s almost exactly how we do it on a golf course

  • @AdamSmith-jw3df

    I hate to ask this question or make a request because you’ve probably done this in the past BUT:
    1. What Exact type of grass are you using?
    2. What is the typical maintenance schedule that Scuba Steve has?
    I know we are in completely different zones, I am in zone 6.5 and it’s so difficult to grow Bermuda once the weather turns chilly and impossible to grow Bent in the summer. I’ve been trying to grow a green for two years and it’s driving me crazy. I’ve got a Toro Flex 21, which will verticicut but even with that level of mower I just can’t do it.

    • @stevesmith582
      @stevesmith582 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Creeping bent grass the heat has been rough this year. But that said the green is the best it’s ever looked.I alternate fungicides every 2 weeks and use a liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks . It is watered daily often 2 times a day.Mow one day roll the next. I also spot spray for clover.

  • @elsey6
    @elsey6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    With a verti-cutting box you would double cut for best results, you could potentially achieve this by another push brush and cut perpendicular to the first, but lets hope Scuba Steve gets thrifty and finds a set of verti cutters for one of his 27 hand mowers somewhere.
