Hi, I love how clearly you explain the measuring and all the tips to get it right. I just found your channel and I am learning so much! Hi Aneka. I have been learning to sew my own clothing and your videos have without a doubt been the most helpful in my progression. You do a wonderful job, thank you for posting. Austin, Texas is a great place to visit if you're thinking about doing any classes in the USA!
Wow! So thorough and yet easy to understand. I typed everything up as I was watching and printed it out for future reference. Thanks so much for such an in-depth and easy to follow video.
This is a great video! I'm working at a dry cleaning store and I want to make sure I mark alterations correctly so I really appreciate the specificity and detail. Thanks!
I've taken these measurements. I measured again four hours later, and the measurements varied by 1/2 inch, and another area by 1 full inch. Also, measuring myself with no assistance, I found it very helpful to tape one end of the measuring tape to myself. Also, I marked my tape with disappearing seamstress ink (pen).
Thanks for sharing your tips Chloe. It is hard when your not 100% sure how tight or not your should be. I would say snug to the body, following the body around. Your idea of taping one end of the tape measure is genius! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Everyone, I had planned to have a downloadable document to go with this video (it was a recommendation from a customer, and a great idea). However in my packing madness for the move to Australia I completely forgot I had scheduled the video for today. I will try and get this document ready this week and pop a link to it here. Sorry! @@tex1622 Hi Tex, I live in Darwin at the moment. But before lockdown I had planned to do some travelling and teach in different cities in Australia. Perhaps it's now time to get that back on the agenda.😊 If you visit my webpage madetosew.com/classes/ you can see what classes were planned. If you subscribe to the newsletter we will keep you informed as my diary gets filled again. I do offer some zoom 1:1 sessions too.
I really love your videos, I've been sewing since i was 12 and my mum taught me on her old machine, fast forward (to 16 years old) 🙈and my parents bought me a new sewing machine for Christmas this year, a Janome RE1712. Your videos are literally amazing and helpful 😭❤️
Another great video. Any chance of a mannequin padding tutorial? There are loads out there but they don't (usually in case I missed one) address shoulder width and nape to waist for example. Plus you make it feel more accessible "that's not a problem". Thanks for the video.
I always enjoy your videos. Thank you. This is very helpful. I’m just wondering if you have link to a printout template to the areas that need to be measured. 😊❤️
Ah no, I was supposed to sort that months/years ago and it completely got forgotten. I am on it now and will get it sorted. Thank you for the reminder. 🙏
Thank you Aneka I have always wanted to learn to sew but never found the right teacher. You are a fantastic teacher and I am researching which sewing machine to buy. I have one question about measurements. I am small boned and most garments I buy are too big from my arm pit to the top of my shoulder. They are made for women with longer shoulders. How do I measure the shoulder length so that I don’t have to always have my shoulders altered by lifting the fabric up? Thank you from Angela
Hi Angela, I am really pleased you like my teaching. I presume you mean that the armhole is too long for you? Or are your shoulders slightly more sloped than average? There are two things you could do. The first one is you could measure your side? From your waist up to the base of your armhole (to do this I usually place a ruler under the armpit at a right angle and measure from the waist to the ruler). You could put this on the pattern, measure up from the waist to the base of the armhole. You will want to have a bit of ease from the base of your armhole to the garment. at least 3/4" (2cm). It is a little hard to measure the armpit to the top of the shoulder; the depth of the armhole. You can measure the circumference with a tape measure? Another tool is to measure your shoulder slope, have a ruler at a right angle from your neck, across the shoulder and then measure from the ruler to the shoulder (height / depth), at the end of the shoulder. This will show you how much the shoulder lowers from the neck, the slope of the shoulder? I hope some of these measurements will help? Aneka x
I see that by using this method every time my standard sizes for garments can fit closer to exact and be predictable by measuring on the mannequins used as my guide, as I never see the user of my garments as I make for charity. Also, in America there is much discrimination against men sewing or God forbid taking measurements on a woman, so mannequins are my way to fit in a general way and still get the job done. There are many places like boys and girls homes that need clothing help as well as hospitals and emergency flood and earthquake victims that need clothes sent to them as they have nothing left, especially after a house fire, garments are gone. Gloves in the wintertime are always needed by the homeless too. Good luck in your new place Anika.

Hi, Aneka, could you make a video on how to draft/sew a neck pattern similar to the one you have on this video? I really want to make one like yours ever since I took your class in Chicago, thanks, judy
Hi Aneka! Do you have an tutorial of finishing a neckline with bias binding around an concealed zipper? There’s nothing on You Tube covering this. Thank you.
Thanks for this insightful tutorial. Now I know why my garments tend to come out too baggy. I add too much ease while measuring as we as when I am drafting the pattern. Question. In measuring the front waist from between the collar bone and not from the center of the shoulder going over how does this affect the fit?
Hi Phyllis, glad that the video helped you. It depends whether you are drafting from scratch or amending a pattern. I personally prefer the CF collar bone to waist measurement because I think it can be easier for people to accurately measure. Often the shoulder to waist can be tricky because people don't know where to start measuring on the shoulder, where should the shoulder seam be? How far forward or back. Unless you have a mannequin with the shoulder line drawn on this can be hard to achieve. Hope this helps? Aneka
Thanks again for the clarification. I often try to draft my own patterns and get varying results. I am certainly going to take the measurements using your standards and try to make the necessary adjustments. I am positive the results will be better. Thanks for your help. Hope you have adjusted to Australia.
Can you please show a detailed how to draft a fitted bodice sloper front and back, using inches. I don’t use metric. Using your body measurements. Thanks
Hi there, I am planning on doing this on my website. I already have a Skirt Block on there (I draft in both metric and imperial always). But I would add it to my website rather than TH-cam so that I can give people support, they send in photos, I help with fitting etc. Thank you, Aneka x
Hi aneka thank you for ur videos.I have a doubt about slipping shoulders when back neck is deep like 11 inches ,could u please tell me how can i prevent falling shoulders.
Hello, are you able to send me some photos (info@madetosew.com), so that I can try and help. Do you have a low front neck too? Are you making for a standard size? Or an individual? Aneka
@@MadetoSew Thank you so much Alena for replying me .Yes front neck also deep about 6" to 7" ,back neck 10" or 11".Iam from India and we were taught that we have to reduce shoulder for back deep necks, suppose for back 9" or more we have to mark shoulder%2 - 2" to prevent from falling even though it falls
Hi, Aneka! May I have a question? When I draw a burst dart on the sides, and after I've traced them and sew the fabric, they make the side of the garment as shortened as the amount of the burst dart's width, how can I solve this problem ? Hope you can help me out ! Thank you !
Hello, yes when you draft a pattern the back will need to be the same length as the front WITHOUT bust darts. So if you want to have bust darts in the front the side seam needs to be longer to accommodate this and the fact that they will close. Does that make sense?
Hi Nikki, do you mean the width across the back is too narrow? If the shirt is already made it would depend if there wasn’t any room if you undid the seam allowances and made them smaller? Otherwise you could add another piece of fabric as a design detail to give more width?

I am certainly going to take the measurements using your standards and try to make the necessary adjustments. I am positive the results will be better. Thanks for your help. Hope you have adjusted to Australia.
@@phyllisgordon6577 Glad it helped Phyllis. Yes we are enjoying it here. Thank you, Aneka
Oh my God. You are amazing
Can you tell us what pattern you use to make these beautiful tops?
Excuse me, I just found the answer to my question! Thanks so much for these fantastic videos! LOVE THEM ALL
@@maxi7261 Thank you Marilyn. It is the Aria pattern and will be launching soon. 😊
AMAZING!
Thanks Sarah.
Please will you do a tutorial on frills or flounces for a shirt front. How you cut them out, what the measurements should be. Thank you.
Of course, great idea. Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Thank you deae 🙏🙏 it helps me a lit♥️♥️

Does that make sense?
so adorable both of you are very cute
Thank you!
I bought a shirt and the top part of it (arm hole to armhole) backside is too small and I want to make it little larger is there a way to do that?
Hi Nikki, do you mean the width across the back is too narrow? If the shirt is already made it would depend if there wasn’t any room if you undid the seam allowances and made them smaller? Otherwise you could add another piece of fabric as a design detail to give more width?
