    12:14 I have happy tears in my eyes right now. FINALLY someone has explained how to handle a situation when you are between two pattern sizes. The answer is as simple as clicking my heels three times lol. All the other videos I watched only talked about choosing the best BWH sizes on the pattern. Thank you so much Aneka.

    Hello Aneka again I thought I would let you that after the frustration of the problem with the back of the princess seam bodice I rechecked everything again and discovered I had made an error with the cutting line.
    It's been over 10 years since I have made any garments and at aged 72 I'm out of practice.
    Have learned so much from my error and with your helpful videos I think I'll succeed in the end.

    I've been altering garments for 50+ years and these are by far the best instructions I've seen, heard, or read! In the U.S., 'calicos' are called 'muslins' and yes, usually made of the same. I've never come across the instructions for choosing a pattern size for larger waist than hip based on the curved or straight line that would be created at the hip - so helpful!
    This is not a plug however, as so many patterns are made of thin tissue, I would suggest transferring the tissue pattern to paper or to a pattern drafting material such as Swedish Pattern Paper (I don't work for them!). Thank you again Aneka.

      @MadetoSew  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love Music thank you SO much for your lovely words and kind remarks. I am so pleased that you liked the tutorial. This means so much, especially with your vast knowledge and experience.
      Thank you for mentioning about the difference in the name 'calicos' 'muslins' - I always forget this and probably should have mentioned it!
      Love your idea of Swedish Tracing Paper. This is a great recommendation and I love of customers that love it! Thank you so much. Aneka x

    Hi there would the waist dart be four at top, five at waist level and six at hip?

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Naseema, the waist dart is usually based off the bust apex. So you can mark this on the pattern, draw a straight line down to the hem and then draw in the waist dart. Aneka x

  • @dawn7071

    Once again a wonderful video . I am a total beginner and have a question to ask. What pattern size should I choose for your free Copenhagen dress when my bust is 86cm and waist is at 76 hip at 94, I tried to blend the size1 at bust (86) to waist size3 (76) but cannot draw a gradual curved line from dart area to the waist line as there is two size jump and it is so steep at such a short distance. Moreover, as my cup size is A and free pattern is cup C so I need to make a small bust adjustment right? Should I cut out the bodice area of pattern and make the adjustment and joint back to the bottom skirt piece? Would much appreciate for your reply. Thank you very much.

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, thank you for a detailed message. You will want to start by measuring your high bust. I show how to do this on this video: th-cam.com/video/b5LOX7_ItaM/w-d-xo.html We will then choose the pattern size based on this measurement with the knowledge that you will probably need to do a Small Bust Adjustment. Feel free to email me info@madetosew.com. Aneka

    • @dawn7071
      @dawn7071 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Made to Sew Hi Aneka thanks for the reply. my full bust measurement is around 2.5cm difference than the high bust so I think I need to do a small bust adjustment from c to a. I also watch the two videoes you recommend but I am still a bit confused about the way to sba adjustment on a dress pattern as your video only show how to on a bodice. So shall I cut the dress patrern at the waist and do the sba and then join the two pieces up later? thanks

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dawn7071 Hello, yes you need to cut off the pattern at the waist. Complete the SBA and then you would stick the pattern pieces back together matching the CF. You will find that a SBA makes the pattern smaller, it will remove some width from the bust pattern, so you will need to blend at the waist to the correct size on the skirt pattern (the bottom part of the dress pattern that you cut away). Does this make sense. Feel free to email if I don't reply as I don't always see the TH-cam comments.
      In terms of choosing the right size at the bust to start with you should start with your High Bust measurement plus 7.5cm for a C Cup. This is because the pattern was drafted for a C Cup, so when it was drafted it was made for someone with the same High Bust measurement and a 7.5cm difference between their High Bust and Bust.
      Once you have chosen the Bust size based upon this measurement you would then need to compare the difference between you High Bust plus C Cup (7.5cm) that you have chosen as the pattern bust size and YOUR actual Bust Size. This difference is the amount you do as a SBA. Half the figure and complete on the Bust part of the top pattern.
      Any questions let me know,
      Aneka

      Made to Sew Hi Aneka I tried to write to your email but seems the address is not right and failed to deliver. so my question now is when I tried to calculate SBA amount for my measurement (high bust is 84 full bust is 86 ) so the SBA amount will be 84+7.5-86=5.5>/2=2.75cm ) on pattern size 2 (91.5 for the bust cup c ) to eliminate the side seam dart, the lower dart leg is over the upper dart leg which means the dart became negative. So how to deal with dart now? thanks

    If i have a pattern that calls for stretch fabric, do I still measure a woven piece of clothing to compare it with the finished garment measurements? Thanks for this great video!

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Janine, NO you will want to measure a garment that is stretch too. With ideally the same amount of stretch. You can hold a piece of fabric that measures 4" (10cm) and see how far it stretches. Make sure you use a fabric that has a similar stretch amount. Hope this makes sense? Aneka

    Hi, when you blend the sizes, how do you deal with notches as you come across them?

    • @MadetoSew

      I would pick one of the notches and stick with it. Usually I use the smaller size (the size I can see). Then remember to true the garment and check all the notches are matching up. th-cam.com/video/BESsHal9feQ/w-d-xo.html Aneka x

    Hi I'm making a princess style bodice to a dress and struggling to get the sizing right.
    The body measurements are bust 35 waist 31 waist .
    The butterick pattern size I used was 14 bust an inch more than body size and the waist was an inch less than the body measurement of 31.
    Princess style bodice front fitted ok but the back was a goo inch too wide where the zip goes.
    The size I feel is a 13 bust between sizes and the waist a 31 between sizes 16 and 18 .
    Does anyone agree with my calculations or can offer anything that would help . Many thanks Sue !

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Susan, when you say the pattern size 14 was 1" more than your body size, is this the size 14 pattern measurements or the finished garment measurements. I would recommend looking at the finished garment measurements to see what the finished garment will measure; you can always compare this to something in your wardrobe. I can find that Butterick add a lot of ease, so the pattern will end up too big if you make your size.
      If the pattern is a good 1" too wide at the CB (do you mean the pattern was too small or too big)? It sounds like you are on the right track if I have understood what yo suggest. Aneka x

    Another great tutorial :) perhaps you could also make one about making patterns yourself and start with something fairly easy, like,. I don't know, a t-shirt or something ;)

    Brilliant video as always! How would I blend from size 5 bust to size 6 sleeve, i.e., for a larger bicep? For me it seems counterintuitive to increase bust size from 5 to 6 towards the armhole, as only the bicep needs to be larger. Can / should I keep the sideseam horizontally where it belongs in size 5, but lower the point where armhole begins by the same length (vertically) as it is longer (horizontally) between sizes 5 and 6? Does this make sense? :D

    Any suggestions if on the pattern, the waist or bust isn't indicated on the pattern?

      Hi Amanda, this does make it tricky and I get quite frustrated when patterns are lazy and don't include this. It doesn't help us sewists!
      You can measure the pattern. Remove the seam allowances and measure to see what the garment measures at these points?
      Obviously you don't know where the waist or the bust is on the garment but you could use YOUR waist and bust. Measure your back length (neck to waist) and plot that on the pattern, measure the width at this point. Measure the depth between YOUR waist and hip and measure the width at this point. Use the Back Pattern as the starting point for the Waist and Hip (as it is more likely to finish at the neck in a similar place to where you are measuring). True the front to the back (you can use this video if you don't know what I mean: th-cam.com/video/BESsHal9feQ/w-d-xo.html) to see where the patterns connect and where you need to measure the front for the full circumference.
      In terms of the Bust, you could again plot this on the pattern and measure the width (th-cam.com/video/mdFUFPn6wbg/w-d-xo.html).
      I hope this helps. Aneka x

    Hi Aneka, thank you for this video!
    I have a query. In uni we used the basic bodice block of a size 12, which means we'd have to grade from there to whichever preferred size. However, now that I'm learning how to make clothes for friends and myself, I can't really follow the standard grading block as my body is taller than average, and I have friends who are more curvier or bustier than usual etc. I'm finding this all very difficult to grasp. What are your suggestions on how to make patterns for women with very different figures in certain areas of the body etc?
    Or will you be able to do a video on this! Your help is truly needed!
    Tola x

      Hi Tola, lovely to hear from you. Thanks for your great message. If you are making clothes for lots of different people I would recommend learning to draft from scratch, make a block for the individual. It does take more time, but it will mean that you can get a perfect end result, cup sizes and length measurements to suit. I hope that helps? I going to start working on filming pattern cutting videos, 1 each week. Aneka :-))

    It's the pattern measurement that is one inch larger than the bust size.
    The back where the zip fits is where the garment is baggy and I'm not quite sure how to get rid of it .
    Do I cut a size In between 14 and 16 or a size 12 and let out the seams?
    I am grateful for you help Anika I've made a twirl of the bodice before I cut the main fabric but would like to get a better fit at the back before cutting out in the fabric.
    It's a cold shoulder top very pretty and not difficult to make just the fitting.
    I plan to cut another twirl .
    I love your videos .
    Many thanks Susan x

      Hi Susan, Happy to help and thank you for your lovely words. If the top is too large at the Bust but too small at the Waist I would choose two different sizes (the smaller size for the bust), and the larger size for the waist and the blend between the two sizes. In terms of the bust, if it is 1" too large, I think you need to make a least a size 12, if not a size 10? I would look at the difference in grading between the size 12 and size 14; if this adds up to the baggy amount then a size 12 will be ok, otherwise maybe work with a size 10 at the bust. Then the waist can be the larger size for the waist, as you mentioned this needs to be bigger? Aneka x

    But you modified the depth of the dart you were suppose to do waist and hips only

      Hi Paula, sorry, what bit didn't make sense? Aneka

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paula, just re-watched this. Yes you have to close the dart and then join up the waist to the bust with the dart closed. Which means that you are extending the dart (changing the end of the dart slightly). But if you didn't do this your pattern might not blend well between the bust and waist, and therefore not sew together very well. Hope this helps? Aneka
