theres no way. this has literally saved me. im a 14 y.o intermediate violinist and i just cant get that relaxed, loose feeling and look with my bow and now i can. i swear ive been blessed by the holy saints, tysm ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Im in my 2nd year of lessons, stated on my 60th birthday! I feel like its going to be YEARS before I get this! Everyone says..you picked the HARDEST instrument out there!!!! I'm not giving up, and happy I'm reading music again! I will definitely give this a try, something my teacher has been saying as well, it just feels so awkward. Thank you!!
Keep at it! I started at 58. Five years' on and I'm playing in a good amateur orchestra! It's been a tough road but one-by-one you manage to tackle the technical issues. Daily practice and going over things you find difficult are key. And, yes, bowing technique is critical. Good luck!
Sabrina, I want to thank you very much for this video! I only began playing in May of 2023, at 44 years old, and this may be the single most helpful tip I've heard since I began playing! Being the cynical, jaded middle-age guy that I am, I didn't have my hopes up, but wow! It works! It really does work! Thanks again! =)
Dear Jedediah, your note fills me with joy and pride! Violin is incredibly nuanced but we can always break things down step by step - that’s the secret! Keep chipping away and remembering why you wanted to start in the first place ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks ! Yes. This is Very true. Very important detail, this tip can have a huge impact on improving control of the bow, and sweet tone production. Plus playing while feeling more relaxed, and expressive.
YAY I'M SO GLAD!!! I recommend you also watch this other bow tutorial video too -- it's a game changer for sure!! th-cam.com/video/cMQokdzkgNg/w-d-xo.html. Thanks so much for watching!!
Great advice! I’m on my second week of violin and this helps me greatly! Coming from guitar, banjo and mandolin the bow has been the most awkward for me.
I hope this helps! The bow arm is soo nuanced and takes many many hours of working through and pondering! If you’re wanting to focus on it more, I recommend doing this warm up at the beginning of every practice day: th-cam.com/video/cMQokdzkgNg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=EaE4v5Nxjvd3nDGp
When trying this it eventually made me bring my violin lower as if it messes up my posture. As I try to bring my bow to the violin I feel like the I can’t get any sound and it provokes me to bring my knuckles up so I can reach the strings. I’m so overwhelmed as a music major that I never thought I had to be so advanced by now. There’s so many requirements for the auditions to other schools that I wish my teachers were enough support rather than misguiding me by convincing me to change my career goals. I think as long as you have the right support you can achieve anything. At the end of the day everything in life is hard. You got a video on how to accelerate how playing speed and tricks to release tension on out left hand.
Hey Raquel. Totally feel this, Sabrina (and especially me, Jinty) have been through these feelings. It takes a loooot of work to unlearn the things we were taught wrong, but let us know if you ever want a zoom lesson with one of us violinists! We’d be happy to talk through a few of these things with you in more depth. You can email us at contact@atlysmusic.com 💖 we’re extremely passionate about helping others with their technique to help everyone reach a higher level and avoid pain! Thank you! I am 16 years old. I’ve been playing violin for almost ten years. I’ve just finished learning Preludium and Allegro, but my bow arm has always felt off and inconsistent. This helps a lot. Also another tip is to keep your thumb tight on the grip area!
It’s our cover of Perfect (Ed Sheeran) 😍 You can listen to the full song here: th-cam.com/video/P-3U_HUFl5Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bVtIaWsmzRRjx52L Thanks for watching!
Rubber bands could be a fun temporary experiment, but I don’t think you need to spend too much time with them on! Find a way to let your fingers relax into position and get comfy there. Then they’ll want to stay there! Keep up the great work!!
Dear Julijell, welcome to violin! I hope your journey will be smoother than my journey on the violin. To begin Had I to do over I would never drink alcohol. I would also avoid coffee and cafeinated tea. A musician needs to be calm for long musical passages. The bow hold needs to be relaxed for quick passages theres no way to do this when your keyed up from tea or coffee. Im sure there are those of you who dissagree. I speak only for myself you may have different experiences. If you are not able to read music do not dispare! The violin was concieved during a time of no printed music!
I have never got this to work. I rather like to play with a straight wrist or - God forbids - wrist slightly up. Gives me better controll and I can play for hours without problems. Now, if I let my hand ”dangle” it will cause a lot of tension and eventually pain (due to the the weight of the hand). But I am glad for those it works for. With this said there was nothing wrong with your explanation. I should add that I am rather tall (6 ft 3) and prefers to play on the upper part of the bow, towards the tip.
@@ATLYSmusic yes I agree. I definately think that we should more often discuss and pay attension to the impact of your body constitution - height and arm length. Crazy but there is almost nothing on this topic AT ALL on the internet and on you tube. Otherwise please post a link. For example, I would guess that shorter people have much easier to play ”by the book style” and towards the frog. While taller persons have easier to play at the tip. Of course all this also depend on your arm length. I would love a video on this topic.
@@Spintheros I'd be so curious about it as well! The only problem is that my only experience is being a petite person, so the video would have to be some kind of collaboration with a tall person...it's very fascinating!
@@ATLYSmusic keep in mind. Next time you meet with a tall violin player :) Without knowing for sure I have the feeling that many of these prefer to play towards the upper half of the bow or the tip.

I wonder why you’re holding your violin if you’re not playing on it 🤔 Also: even if your advice is correct, the shape of the hand changes depending on which part of the bow you play. Seriously, was it so hard to play one note as a demonstration?🤔

@@ATLYSmusic this dude. 😮💨 I make tutorial videos as well and it's amazing the blueprint they all use. Insult us and bait us into defending ourselves and then use the "in" to hit on us. Some men are just walking compost.
By the way, let me tell you why this video is flawed: using the bow ain’t only about letting your fingers fall, but about relaxing the thumb, balancing the weight between the tip and the frog, etc. Without all these elements COMBINED, you still can’t have a good sound... so by itself, this video is incomplete. Therefore useless. These other details might have been more obvious if you would have PLAYED. Maybe in a tutorial about PLAYING THE VIOLIN, you should actually PLAY THE VIOLIN 🤦♀️
