    For me, it's coloring books, comfy sweats, and a picture of my puppies. 💙

    Note to self... Never, ever check into a mental hospital voluntarily for my extreme anxiety and depression. Better actually to be dead I think. Without my phone (brain numbing and stress relief) , my caffeine (tea bags), my nicotine (vape) and my freedom I would actually go fully insane.

    I went to a mental hospital in Maywood that used to let the patients smoke on the patio.But they don't allow the patients to smoke on the patio anymore since the smoking laws changed.

    • @JustaMentalNote
      @JustaMentalNote  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I figured that there were probably some hospitals that allowed smoking, but I feel like those are getter fewer and fewer as time goes on. Most of the people who smoke that I've talked to who have been hospitalized have simply been given the patch during intake so they don't deal with withdrawal. Thank you for sharing your experience though and I hope that you're in a better place now!

      @@JustaMentalNote So the one I went to allowed people to smoke... I don't smoke, but I know all the smokers were obviously very happy about that. There was an outdoor terrace (with a basketball court, some benches, and of course the high fences) where people were allowed to smoke and we'd go out 3 - 4x a day. It's amazed me, from watching all the videos on YT, how different all of the mental hospitals are. There were definitely some hellish parts of my time at the hospital, but I watched another person's video and I was like thank God I didn't go there.
      Devin, I also just wanted to say that you've got a great channel. Your videos truly resonate with me. I told my story on IG, but didn't do it through video, which I think is even more brave and courageous. I've been thinking recently about starting a TH-cam channel for my account, but not sure.
      I have an IG account named @StopTheStigma365 and would love to have you join it! Thanks again for the great videos!

    I was inpatient at a local mental health hospital last year (PTSD due to a VERY recent trauma and I was suicidal, SH urges, and had other harmful thoughts), and I can totally relate to this. Except that when I was very suicidal, they had me in paper gowns that ripped extremely easily. What I hated the most was that they didn't let me be in any kind of underwear, so I always had to arrange myself somehow in group therapy to make sure that I wouldn't expose myself to anyone. However, thankfully, I managed to get around that rule as I thought I had started my period, as I had started spotting (body was super stressed and being weird, so go figure). So I told the nurse's station that I had started my period, so they allowed me to be in underwear and have some pads and tampons.
    Also one thing we were NOT allowed to have on our floor was packets of sugar. This is because of those who were diabetic. That could have been used against someone who is diabetic, or the diabetic could use it on themselves. However, at the time, it was idiotic (in my mind) when we didn't have any diabetics on the floor as we could have other drinks like kool-aid.
    One more thing....something that I have been wondering about....what about those who come to the psych ward with nothing, and have no one to help them out? Like if a person is going to be in a psych ward for a few weeks (like I was), they're going to need more than one set of clothes. I would hope that psych wards would some how have a stash of clothes that people could wear in cases like this.

      They have to be, but I also kinda feel like it's a bit dehumanizing in a way. When I was in the psych ward, we had to earn our clothes. If we were deemed to dangerous to ourselves, we had our clothes taken away and placed into paper hospital gowns and had to sleep on a "suicide mattress." Totally not fun......

    I know it sound silly, and it wouldn’t stop me from seeking treatment if needed but I’ve had chronic pain since I was 13, one of the ways I manage the pain (and more recently anxiety) is music. I also love my very basic e-reader. My music is on my cellphone. I could get by without the phone fine when my friend was in treatment they let her use the phone to tell her friends where she was and then she could use the facility’s phone. That info came in really handy when another friend went into treatment, sent a big group texts telling her friends and mother what had happened. I was able to explain to everyone in the thread that yes, mental hospitals take your phone away from you. Honestly I wish I could say it helped her mom, but my friend had just left an abusive ex, also the guy she called when she took the pills, and the guy that drove her to the ER. Her mom and another friend were envisioning a lifetime movie. And he wouldn’t tell anyone where she was so we had to have the police do a welfare check. I also couldn’t give two flying f’s about social media, but that’s a drug to some people.
    Anyway listening to music and lately softly singing has helped control pain and anxiety it gives my brain something to focus on while I’m in pain and might not be able to sit up and color or even have the focus to read. I know I’d still have TV and it wouldn’t be a barrier to getting help if I really needed it but it makes it seem very daunting.
    This is a great list I knew quite a few of these like underwire bras and pants ties. But would never have thought about alcohol in body products or wires from headphones. And plastic bags! I’ll bet a lot of well meaning loved ones would have NEVER thought of that!
    thank you for sharing

      @JustaMentalNote  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeahhhhh. There were a few staff members that I absolutely adored, who were in it for the right reasons, and who genuinely wanted all of us to get better. But there was also a large chunk of the staff that literally just made us feel like it was adult day care. Unfortunately, burnout is SUPER common in mental health positions and when the staff doesn’t make sure their mental health is good, all of the patients suffer for it. I just hope more of the really good ones get into the field because they truly made a difference in my life.

      I'm actually planning on doing a video about myths about mental hospitals because most people think they are much scarier than they actually are. To me, it was almost like adult daycare while they figured your medications out. Of course, not every hospital is made equal and not all of them are great. If you need help finding a facility in your area, you can always DM and I can help research too. Or, if you have a primary care doctor or a mental health professional that you currently go to, they would also be able to help you as well. I'm sending you lots of positive, healing energy and I'm always here if I can help with anything!

When it comes to a minor trying to get mental health help, the best way to do that is to get an adult on your side. It could be a teacher, a doctor, a school counselor, a family friend. Any adult you feel comfortable talking to, who can then help you figure out what your next steps can be and can help you talk to your dad.

      Quite the opposite. I know how much it sucks, but if you need the help to stay safe, then you need the help to stay safe. I didn't want to go inpatient last year, but I was absolutely defeated and terrified that I was going to hurt myself. Plus, I had my therpist telling me that if I didn't check myself in by a certain time, she was going to send the police over for a safety check, which I didn't want either (I was getting very suicidal due to a recent trauma at the time...later diagnosed with PTSD). So, I packed myself a bag with a few days worth of clothes, my meds, my purse, put on my jacket, and walked myself into the mental health hospital, and checked myself in. I totally felt like a scared dog, but it is what I had to do to keep myself safe......learned a ton since then.

      @@JustaMentalNote Assisted suicide is available for foreigners in Switzerland for chronic, untreatable/incurable mental illness. Medical aid in dying is also available for mentally ill citizens of Canada, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Belgium and a couple of other countries. Some things are worse than death, and being disabled or in a mental hospital are just two examples. Do you realize you are making things WORSE for those of us who value our independence, quality of life, and having a middle class standard of living???? While someone is in a psych unit they are prevented from having a social life or pursuing an education or career. They are even prevented from paying their bills! It is a common occurrence for people to end up being evicted from their rental apartment or having their mortgage foreclosed if they miss only one or two payments while in a mental hospital or jail. It would be better if all mental hospitals were closed. If someone is violent, there are plenty of jails and prisons but the only valid reason for locking someone up should be CRIME, not so-called "mental illness" which is not even a real illness.

      @@larissayeakel4146 I'm so sorry that you are struggling right now. I'm assuming that you live with your parents, and getting help for mental health can be difficult without parental consent if you are a minor. If you are over 18, you are able to make those health care decisions for yourself. You can reach out to a local mental health professional or even to your doctor to figure out what your next steps should be. If you are under 18, your best bet would probably be to talk to an adult at school. At lot of schools have psychologists, but all schools should have school counselors that you can work with to figure out next steps. I know the first person I talked to about getting mental health help was a teacher, and she was able to guide me from there. So really, going to any trusted adult could be very helpful.
