Thanks for the video man. My boat has been acting up for a year. Been stranded too many times. I've gone through new batteries and even changed out the cables. Not getting a charge back to the battery! I have an 04 F115 yamaha. I'm not a mechanic but I love to do things myself if it's within my capability. I think I'll give it a shot since I don't have a grand to give a mechanic lol she's been a pain in my ass.
It's a super simple repair as long as you have the tool. I highly recommend that! You can always bag and tag your nuts and bolts for every piece you take off and lay them in order, so when you go back together its the same order with everything organized. I'm glad the video helped! That's the whole point! Tight lines!

Those stator screws are 55 inch pounds lol and should be lock threaded! Otherwise awesome job! Also if you have the v-6 blocks there is no key, the flywheel is grooved Also never torque with your impact ... torque to specs. That's how you wreck your bearings for your connecting rods. Just sharing my mercury knowledge as a tech.
Actually - no. You should check the rectifier first. It's easier to test, and cheaper to replace. Also, take a photo before you start switching wires. You may wanna touch up the spots on the wires that you punctured to test with some liquid electrical tape. Excellent video thx for posting this.

When you checked resistance from the coil to ground, isn't it supposed to have read OL. If it measured any resistance, wouldn't that have indicated a bad coil? Just curious.
In the troubleshooting section on the instruction sheet from CDI it says: 1. Check resistance between the yellow wires, you should read 0.4 ohms. 2. Check the resistance from each yellow wire to engine ground, you should not read any resistance. Resistance to ground indicates a bad stator. Remember if you are touching the test leads you will get a high resistance. I appreciate your question, and checking out my channel, I'm trying to hit 1,000 subscribers this year! Bought a caltric stator .Got a problem it has green an brown wires an 2 yellow.Stock wires are green/white strip an White with green strip an 2yellow wires.not sure how to hook up..Any help would be appreciated
Would you be able to show a short video how your trigger is mounted? I got the service manual for my 40HP Mercury and even there they don't show it step by step
@@WildWonderfulOutdoors it’s the circular plastic piece that ends up in the center of the stator. It’s mounted by a plastic arm that sticks out to the left of the stator and I see it move around when you touch it. It shouldn’t be moving around like that.
@@WildWonderfulOutdoors at 7:09 when you pick up the old stator there is a part sitting around the shaft that moves around a little as you pick up the stator, it kind of looks like a smaller stator, that’s the trigger and I’m pretty sure it’s not supposed to be loose like that.
I've got a 1996 Merc 150 EFI 2-stroke that absolutely quits while at WOT after being well warmed up (20 min of running). I can't go past 7 mph after that happens and it'll start right up after it quits. Hoping for a DIY solution but don't know where to start, ECU, stator, voltage regulators (2). I changed the plugs...no diff.
I just filmed a video a couple weeks ago that I need to edit. This same motor was breaking up at WOT really bad. We ended up replacing a coil that had a loose connection but I think the main problem was a section of wire that we ended up replacing. Check your wiring, on my motor it looked burnt because of all corrosion causing resistance which causes heat. I will try and get that video up soon and I will let you know when it is. You could subscribe too and then you will know when it’s up.
Check your model and "family" number on the factory sticker in the motor. You can search parts by that, the stator I installed was made by CDI, it came with diagnostic instructions and instructions to install. Very high quality products from them.
Misfires, poor idle and really couldn't run at low rpms for no wake zones, moving around the ramp. There was more to be found, this was years ago I have a new video I am working on where we find a culprit that definitely helped exaggerate those issues.
@@JEB_FISHING Starting as far as? You're using the choke on the key I'm assuming. The cheapest part to throw at it to start is a fuel filter and some stabil to make sure the gas is good.
@@WildWonderfulOutdoors no I don't use the choke. 98% of the time starts right up. But lately not so much or I'll be idling and then it just dies runs rough and can't go above 30 mph. I check the plugs they did not seem burnt but did have a lot of oil and gas on but yes I will do the fuel filter
I have a 2004 90 horse 2 stroke mercury,when I checked between the two yellow wires, It toggles between.3 and.4.When I checked the ohms between the green with the white stripe and the white I get.681.Also the two bullet connectors from the stator on the two yellow wires have been warm enough that the coating stuck together.The original stator is on the motor and I changed the voltage regulator a week ago because of a high voltage problem.

If you know the year, make and hp then you should be able to find out what model number it is online. Just google it and compare what pops up to what you have.
Greetings, does it matter how many amps the stator brings? I'm in the market for a new stator but I keep seeing different amps 9 amp and 16 amp. Its for a merc 75 hp 2003 2 stroke.
We called a local marina and gave them our model number and they ordered the part. We went with a CDI electronics stator. It is "aftermarket" but it is like ac delco to GM. They make the part for the OEM. I would at least call a local dealer and have them tell you which one to get. Also order your flywheel puller!

No sir, the flywheel is notched and the crankshaft has a pin that only allows it to go in one spot. So the balance or timing never changes. If you get the tool it's super easy.
No, it just attaches to the flywheel. It’s not it’s own moving part. I would check carbs and fuel filter first. Does it bog down or just not rev to 5600. If max is 5600 you probably wouldn’t run it that high anyway. That would be like keeping your car at redline going down the highway.
So... 97 90hp elpto here. I have zero spark and zero power getting to the coils. The boat has been sitting for a while. I read that the stator could be my problem... checked it and it's bad from what I can tell. Obviously it needs replacement, but what else would prevent spark after this gets replaced? Oh... and very informative video... I already ordered my tool for this because of this video. Thanks!
Battery is good and also new. Don't think it has a separate coil wire. I just checked it at each of the three coil packs. No power is getting to them to fire the plugs.
@@MrGallaleo it might be worth buying 1 new coil and checking if it works, then move it to the other two spots and see if it works there too. Could just be bad coils.

Harbor Freight bolt type whell puller is all you need - did my 2002 40 hp mercury in 3 minutes.

I would think not. It is just mounted to the rotating assembly, not in contact with anything.

The tool is on amazon, the part number is in the description. If it is just one cylinder for sure, start with spark and coil.

You can use a PISTON STOP to remove flywheel nut too.
A bad stator won’t keep the motor from starting, correct? With no spark, what could be the problem ? Same motor.
We also recently had the volt regulator replaced. It causes similar symptoms to the stator being bad.

Up to 4 cylinder 660 to 710 between greenwhites should be ok according to manual

No, the flywheel has a guide pin on the crankshaft. So there is only one way to put it on.

Check the battery to make sure it’s charged. Is there a separate coil wire? It could be a bad coil too.
Battery is good and also new. Don't think it has a separate coil wire. I just checked it at each of the three coil packs. No power is getting to them to fire the plugs.

You don't know how to read a Volt/ohm meter apparently.. O.L. is NOT ohm overload...it means no resistance or open wire...what a waste of time here

No you shouldn't have to. Maybe just the flywheel cover.
