Absolutely brilliant! Another Christopher Nolan picture that is both visually stunning, and deeply intellectually stimulating… and again Kip Thorne has a hand in it! That final scene, however, is particularly poignant today. The cold war never ended, even after the Soviet Union fell. We are fast to take the slightest insult so personally that we destroy each other over it. Politicians wield such power that they can systematically eliminate opposition with impunity unless common people keep them in check. Prometheus gave man fire. Prometheus was tortured for his actions. Man inevitably burns himself.
It's Nolan's magnum opus. Everything this review said on this being a cross between science, politics, philosophy, history, and more. It's 3 hours, yes, but it felt like only 2 hours. I've been a long time Nolan fan, but even if anyone out there reading this is NOT a Nolan fan, if you only see one of his films in your life (hard as that is for me to imagine) please let it be this one. Not only is it my favorite Nolan film already. It's up there with Synecdoche New York, Requiem for a Dream & American History X in terms of my overall favorite films, and it's DEFINITELY the best biopic I've ever seen. I'm STILL thinking about the ending.
the last lines gave me chills. The theater was dead silent for a moment after almost like we all felt the dread of a possible future that we try not to think about
My theater was dead silent for the whole movie, me included. I was so invested to the story that I forgot I was in a theater. After the movie only thing I had to say was: ”GOD DAMN!” What a movie!
I thought the detonation scene was spectacular. The film wasn’t meant to just be about the detonation but the beginnings and outcome of the detonation. It is definitely a smart man’s movie
The silence of the breathing really added to the scene, and the led up was amazing as the score seriously was anxiety inducing to the point where even I was shitting myself. Seriously a great movie
@@sanjefffI think the silence was because light travels faster than light since they were 20 miles out it took about 2 minutes for the sound to catch up.
No it’s just a shit film. It was long and pointless and I really didn’t need to know that much about Oppenheimer’s sex life. How do you not even bring up enola gay or bockscar?
The detonation of the bomb was fucking incredible, especially since it was all real, no CGI. The sound of the shockwave when it finally hit scared the absolute shit out of my friend and I.
@SmashBrosInitiative Every civilian death in a conflict is shameful and warrants execution of the person that ordered it and the person then did it. Wars should be fought between people that signed up for it.

The audio to this movie with the atoms and the bomb going off gave me a sense of how minuscule atoms are, at the same time the magnitude of their power. It made me feel so vulnerable, empathizing with those who suffered. A must see in IMAX or AMC Dolby if near you. What a movie…
Most cinemas in USA & Europe (& a few elsewhere) already ARE those types mentioned since early 2000s if not earlier & constantly upgrading audio/video/visual equipment & experience & more so
Just saw this in imax 70mm and the main take away I have is just the insane dread, fear, anxiety, and stress this movie is able to display and make the audience feel.
I just saw it earlier today and it was impactful on so many levels. I feel like it truly captured the struggle he went through. His betrayal to himself was the worst of all and you could feel it. My only true gripe with the film is the scene where Jean makes him read the "now I am become death" line. There were definitely some creative liberties taken there and it kinda cheapened the power and gravity of it and why it stuck with him.
OMG me too! I dindnt expect this from a Nolan movie unless ofc it actually happened which I doubt so. It was in such a bad taste. I thought that we would get a re-enactment of that speech where Oppenheimer first quoted it or maybe the first time he read the verse etc and got reminded about his creation but in any case they just cheapened it by bringing it again and again and with the sex scene it just, its just juvenile! Not to mention, it must be offending to people who are actually Hindus and they live by the book. It made sense during the detonation though!
I grew up in Whittier, California which is a small Quaker town of note because President Nixon went to law school there. But, there was a little known secret. Whittier was one of, if not THE city where the science team settled after the war. I had an opportunity to meet one of them. It was purely by accident. He was an exchange student sponsor. He happened to be the sponsor of my friend from Europe. While waiting for my friend to get ready to go out, I was waiting in the library of the house. I noticed a picture from Trinity and asked why that picture would be in his library. He told me his story. His explanation was really quite simple. They were so seduced by the complexity of the problem, The science, The physics that they were so focused on the question CAN it be done that they never stopped for even a moment of SHOULD it be done… until it was too late. He recalled the horror/excitement of that moment when it first worked and the realization of what they had unleashed. I don’t know if they cover this part of history but he admitted to several suicides that night after everything was finished. I’m looking forward to seeing this movie. Given everything that is going on here at home and abroad, I think we really should pause and understand what modern war really looks like and stop trying to glorify it for personal gain.
The heavy lines that closed the film did indeed send a chill down my spine…. But with all the talk of people leaving this movie feeling traumatized left me waiting for a moment of great shock and awe that never arrived for me.
I saw it last night - another masterpiece from Nolan. The actors did a great great great job, the music was spectacular! I didn't expect to see a video about Oppenheimer and I'm really glad you did one, Ryan.
Hi! Love your stuff! I was, however, hoping for more of a dive into Strauss and Oppenheimer's relationship because I didn't really understand it until I came home and started reading about it. Maybe for another video?
A truly star studded cast, but easily the highlight goes to Cillian Murphy (who I completely blanked out of my mind and immersed into Oppenheimer) and RDJ’s performance
I really loved this movie as it showed the best portrayal of Oppenheimer and opening of Pandora's Box. There wasn't a moment in the movie that wasn't top tier. Though I think the comedy lighten the mood of the movie was a little bit much. I was dead silent on the drive home listening to the soundtrack, The soundtrack was amazing.
The Kennedy name drop is a correlation to the cold war when it was at its peak and the world being so close starting a nuclear war, the very thing Oppenheimer feared.
I loved the movie to bits. I thought the Trinity Test would get a more extended sequence but as you said, it's about the man, not the bomb. In fact, now that I think about it, Oppenheimer's visions of the bomb were far more profound and powerful than the Test. I have to watch it again.
I found one of the themes to be paradoxes. Just as light is paradoxically both a wave and a particle, so are the choices of people sometimes paradoxically good and bad. Oppenheimer's choices seemed to, at some points, be paradoxical to each other. He was complicated, just as we are complicated, and so is everyone else we judge.
Did Nolan really "tease" JFK at the end? Why did he do it that way? Is this the beginning of a Nolan History Connected Universe??? Now all I want is a Nolan directed JFK film
@vashsunglasses Oh I know that's how it happened but it also felt like The Joker Tease at the end of Batman Begins "Some kid rising up the ranks trying make a name for himself....Kennedy" Just felt so silly as if they're gonna tease some kind of Nolan Biopic Verse This is how bad modern day super hero cinema has fried my brain lol
I like how in the background of your video store, you have 2 Matthew Broderick films. Matthew Broderick, of course, nearly started Global Thermonuclear War in WarGames.
A movie of betrayal from the viewpoint of Oppenheimer... But it's so much more deeper than this. The parallels to what is happening to the world today is just devastating.
Sound editing and cimetography are amazing yes actors directos writing alll amazing im.sure 10 oscar nominations BUT THE SOUND TRACK AND MUSIC THE editing when its complete silent then boom also love when Oppenheim listening to silence great job
To me, it wasnt about the detonation or that abrupt chain reaction which supposedly in a short time destroys everything but rather it was radiation poisoning, the aftermath. The emotions itself, the guilt is not a build up that errupts but rather constant harrowing shadow that keeps getting worse. It is that constant drowning situation. At least that to me was the point and the way the chronology was in the movie, instead of giving you the good happy days, the bomb and the aftermath, it 's aftermath from the moment movie started. It doesn't really have you a good moment without those imagery or flashbacks such as those feet stampings or chain reaction even most serene of moments!
When they detonated the test bomb, the theatre went dead silent, and when the boom hit after he said “I am death, the destroyer of worlds” the entire theatre jumped out of their seats as they got such a big fright lol
The use of the word Prometheus in this film, is to account that most of the film’s content is Christopher Nolan’s interpretation of the book; American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer
It was heavy and really gave us more about someone who took a leap as great as einstien in science. I hope we get a in-depth documentary beacuse i dont think one has been made about him.
Nolan himself said “I knew that I had two timelines that we were running in the film -- One is in color, and that’s Oppenheimer’s SUBJECTIVE experience. That’s the bulk of the film. Then the other is a black and white timeline. It’s a more OBJECTIVE view of his story from a different character’s point of view." So they are both correct. Plus, subjective doesn't mean it wasn't real. It just means it's not provable fact.
what i learned from this movie is that, i saw it more from spiritual aspect. all of thoughts and imagination will become reality (be it good or worst possible thing) it might take eternity but it will become true, until we have no thought we are empty and become whole with everyone
You missed the parallel between the creation of the bomb and the creation of a sentient artificial intelligence. Just as Oppenheimer reluctantly ushered in a new age, we are coming to another precipice moment where the continued existence of our species can no longer be assumed. I hope we come up with a better solution to that challenge than MAD.
It was briefly mentioned...that was a symbolic indicator of how much processed plutonium had been produced to date. Marbles were gradually added, as the material was painstakingly extracted bit by bit, month by month, in the nuclear labs. When the bowl was finally full, that meant they woud have enough for the project.
It’s a subject that is dealt with often in sci fi, anime. In Naruto, Pains objective was to cause a tragedy so horrific with the tailed beasts that Humanity would have no choice but to unite and bring about periods of peace. In Gundam Wing, Zechs conclusion was to cause a tragedy on Earth and unite Humanity in Total Pacificsm. Ofcourse he would learn that was a flawed philosophy and that for peace to finally happen each person must be willing to stand up and fight for it.( hmmmmm not a bad idea) In Star Trek, The Eugenics Wars, Then WW3 push humanity to the brink but with a desire to unite. Then First Contact with an Alien civilization that saw that we had discovered how to Travel faster than Light United Humanity. War, disease, poverty went away.
I just watched it. My only critique was the pacing was at light speed and transitions were jarring. You never were given the chance to really digest the scene you saw previously. And the 3rd act was long in the tooth and hard to follow if you’re catching up on ww2 history and the behind the scenes politics and drama that where going on. To me this was a movie for the ww2 history buff and not your average movie watcher. I think I’ll have to watch this another 2 times to final understand all that was going on.
He took on the project because as much as he was opposed to war and the senseless killing it brings, he had experience with the nazis. And as he says in the movie about not knowing if we the United States can be trusted with nukes, but he knew the nazis could not. Had Hitler gotten the bomb he would have turned our world into a living version of hell. I served and fought in Afghanistan and Iraq, and once it became clear that the Bush administration had lied to the world in order to invade a country whose leader was admittedly a despot, we essentially did the exact same thing we are denouncing Russia for right now. And if pushed Russia does not employ a no first strike policy, and it's absolutely possible that if pushed past some point Putin would use nuclear weapons. If that happens the modern world as we know it ends in the best case, in the worst case ours and most other species will be wiped out. Our world would survive and repopulate but humanity would be a footnote
The black and white scenes were not about being objective, they were Strauss’s POV, color Oppenheimer’s POV. They helped show how Strauss misinterpreted various situations and led him to his decisions to negatively impact Oppenheimer.
The world as we know it will end by thermonuclear warfare. This movie is aware of this inevitable, eventual, reality. That is why the movie hits soo hard at the end. Its basically saying in bold letters "WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE" and he was the one who opened the door for the end. The style of the movie gives you Oppenheimers perspective. Nothing more, nothing less. They managed to not offend Japan by not showing the nukes hitting the city. The ending graphic actually only shows north america getting nuked. Russia and china dont even show to be attacked in that graphic. This also shows that Nolan wanted to have this movie accepted in Russia and China, without a sour aftertaste. So for that, an absolute genius movie.
The movie was good but I was disappointed that Nolan didn’t show the audience the actual Hiroshima/Nagasaki nuclear attack or the aftermath of it. This to me is something that is very dark, but important for the audience to see the actual history.
@@ayonavoghosh415 I can agree with you on that. The audience only saw a glimpse of what it was. However seeing a small scene of it would’ve at least been more. Than the words mentioning it.
Yeah this is a whole film of based on the two boats having civilians and prisoners each, placed with bombs. It was so complicated to whom is the true villain and who just wants to be a hero to survive

Did anyone else see an “extra hand” keeping Jean’s head in the water? It was a very very quick cut when we are told about Strauss.
Yes! I feel its open to interpretation like either she was killed bc gov eliminated one of Opps distractions Or a gloved hand bc of Opps own guilt
Jean's suicide letters were burned by her father when he found her. So there is plenty of reason to suspect foul play.

Given everything that is going on here at home and abroad, I think we really should pause and understand what modern war really looks like and stop trying to glorify it for personal gain.
Oppenheimer : This is cinema Thanks Nolan for this masterpiece 🥇😍👏
The editing was just so tremendous! Cinematography was on point with symbolism too!
Great video, Screencrush. You said it all.
The heavy lines that closed the film did indeed send a chill down my spine…. But with all the talk of people leaving this movie feeling traumatized left me waiting for a moment of great shock and awe that never arrived for me.
Just came back from the theather watching this movie. Such a awesome movie. Also as you said very aplicable to the times we live in
just watched it, one of the best films of it's kind. I loved it as it wasn't as simple to grasp as other films. I knew it would be an amazing film!
I saw it last night - another masterpiece from Nolan. The actors did a great great great job, the music was spectacular! I didn't expect to see a video about Oppenheimer and I'm really glad you did one, Ryan.
Composed by Ludwig Göransson (The Mandalorian)
Oppenheimer feels like a real turning point in the Nolanverse.
The Detonation Scene, the lag between the visual and the sound of explosion 💥 Followed science even here
Who else was lucky enough to see it in 70 mm? Absolutely beautiful.
What are you talking about? The explosion scene is amazing. If anything, it is “Overwhelming!” I felt a rush of emotions in that moment.
I am so glad I had a heavy background in the Manhattan Project. Made the movie so much better.
I’m sure you did bud
I loved the movie to bits. I thought the Trinity Test would get a more extended sequence but as you said, it's about the man, not the bomb. In fact, now that I think about it, Oppenheimer's visions of the bomb were far more profound and powerful than the Test. I have to watch it again.
Doug nailed it with the Days of our lives line
I found one of the themes to be paradoxes. Just as light is paradoxically both a wave and a particle, so are the choices of people sometimes paradoxically good and bad. Oppenheimer's choices seemed to, at some points, be paradoxical to each other. He was complicated, just as we are complicated, and so is everyone else we judge.
I felt goosebumps and deep life perspective moments from this detail, hard work , influential movie.
Did Nolan really "tease" JFK at the end? Why did he do it that way?
Is this the beginning of a Nolan History Connected Universe???
Now all I want is a Nolan directed JFK film
It wasn't a tease, it's actually how it happened.
@vashsunglasses Oh I know that's how it happened but it also felt like The Joker Tease at the end of Batman Begins
"Some kid rising up the ranks trying make a name for himself....Kennedy"
Just felt so silly as if they're gonna tease some kind of Nolan Biopic Verse
This is how bad modern day super hero cinema has fried my brain lol
@@vashsunglassesGood
I like how in the background of your video store, you have 2 Matthew Broderick films. Matthew Broderick, of course, nearly started Global Thermonuclear War in WarGames.
"Kill thousands to save millions." Never been more true. Thank you Oppenheimer.
A movie of betrayal from the viewpoint of Oppenheimer... But it's so much more deeper than this. The parallels to what is happening to the world today is just devastating.
Sound editing and cimetography are amazing yes actors directos writing alll amazing im.sure 10 oscar nominations BUT THE SOUND TRACK AND MUSIC THE editing when its complete silent then boom also love when Oppenheim listening to silence great job
this is the first movie i watch where it isnt the action that was the star of the show but the spectacular consequence of the action.
Haven’t seen the movie, and haven’t watched this video because I don’t want any spoilers for it. But I just gotta say that thumbnail is WILD
Tyler Glasnow stole every scene he was in 👏
great breakdown. I got goosebumps
Can’t wait to see this film on IMAX!!
Great video!
I wish it was longer ahha
I actually sobbing after the ending.
This thumbnail might be one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
Chills at the end
Shiva is known as The Destroyer within the Trimurti, the Hindu trinity which also includes Brahma and Vishnu-Wiki
That thumbnail is wild dawg
The ending chilled me to the core of my soul 😮 I love films that have that impact on you
The black and white scenes were to show Robert Downey jr perspective not to differentiate what was real or not
Nolan himself said “I knew that I had two timelines that we were running in the film -- One is in color, and that’s Oppenheimer’s SUBJECTIVE experience. That’s the bulk of the film. Then the other is a black and white timeline. It’s a more OBJECTIVE view of his story from a different character’s point of view." So they are both correct. Plus, subjective doesn't mean it wasn't real. It just means it's not provable fact.
That shaky background effect was used with the Batman Scarecrow toxin effects too!
i was waiting for you to talk about this movie
what i learned from this movie is that, i saw it more from spiritual aspect. all of thoughts and imagination will become reality (be it good or worst possible thing) it might take eternity but it will become true, until we have no thought we are empty and become whole with everyone
Oppenheimer is related to Arjuna for doing his duty .
just a perfect review
You missed the parallel between the creation of the bomb and the creation of a sentient artificial intelligence. Just as Oppenheimer reluctantly ushered in a new age, we are coming to another precipice moment where the continued existence of our species can no longer be assumed. I hope we come up with a better solution to that challenge than MAD.
This has got to be the most TH-cam thumbnail ever
Excellent film!!! a must see!
thanks for the review, keep it up!
I didn't think we would see the actual bombs dropping in Japan as this was focused on Oppenheimer.
I’ve watched practically every review for this movie, but Ryan has the best breakdowns on the internet
just saw this movie, i may have missed it, whats the idea of the jar of marbles? whats he metaphor there?
It was briefly mentioned...that was a symbolic indicator of how much processed plutonium had been produced to date. Marbles were gradually added, as the material was painstakingly extracted bit by bit, month by month, in the nuclear labs. When the bowl was finally full, that meant they woud have enough for the project.
was a good movie, the bomb scene had the whole theatre in silence for such a long minute, was a cool experience
Was the last line of the movie stated by Oppenheimer? “ I prayed that it would”
It’s a subject that is dealt with often in sci fi, anime.
Ofcourse he would learn that was a flawed philosophy and that for peace to finally happen each person must be willing to stand up and fight for it.( hmmmmm not a bad idea)
In Star Trek, The Eugenics Wars, Then WW3 push humanity to the brink but with a desire to unite.
Can we get a movie with Cillian Murphy, Mads Mikkelsen, and Daniel Day Lewis......
Beautiful recap!
Bro when Two Face showed up at the end and fought Batman damn that was a crazy ending.
There will be a day, hopefully never, where i will open one of your videos and be crushed by the news.
Amazing, informative video
Great breakdown!! THIS IS CINEMA. Nolan does it again!!
The black and white scenes were not about being objective, they were Strauss’s POV, color Oppenheimer’s POV. They helped show how Strauss misinterpreted various situations and led him to his decisions to negatively impact Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer for me is pure cinema at its best and probably the best film I have seen all years. And that's saying something.
Loved the two face easter eggs and the breaking bad cameos
Cillian was sooo good in this.
The world as we know it will end by thermonuclear warfare. This movie is aware of this inevitable, eventual, reality. That is why the movie hits soo hard at the end. Its basically saying in bold letters
"WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE" and he was the one who opened the door for the end.
So for that, an absolute genius movie.
why didnt batman create a bat time machine in dark knight rises 2 to stop oppenheimer from frying up the chinese in japan
It will be the 69th installment in the Nolan cinematic universe😅😂
Why haven’t you covered Sound of Freedom???
I came here from a twitter screenshot making fun of the clickbait thumbnail but this viseo is actually pretty good
The movie was good but I was disappointed that Nolan didn’t show the audience the actual Hiroshima/Nagasaki nuclear attack or the aftermath of it. This to me is something that is very dark, but important for the audience to see the actual history.
the movie is about Oppenheimer, not world war 2
I think he showed enough of the effects of all that during his speech in the gymnasium.
Exactly. That moment itself was more than enough to project how Oppenheimer had realised the monster that he had unleashed.
@@ayonavoghosh415 I can agree with you on that. The audience only saw a glimpse of what it was. However seeing a small scene of it would’ve at least been more. Than the words mentioning it.
@@AndyTheMainman The movie is from Oppenheimer's POV, Oppenheimer didn't witness Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Yeah this is a whole film of based on the two boats having civilians and prisoners each, placed with bombs. It was so complicated to whom is the true villain and who just wants to be a hero to survive
