  • The stars and director of The Holdovers visit the BFI Southbank to talk about the film.
When the winter break arrives in December 1970, Paul Hunham, a teacher at a prestigious New England boarding school, is forced to remain on campus to babysit a ragtag group of students who have nowhere else to go. Twenty years after Sideways, Alexander Payne reunites with Paul Giamatti for this perfect, bittersweet coming of age comedy-drama. Giamatti is delightful as the curmudgeonly Professor Hunham, while Da’Vine Joy Randolph steals scenes and hearts as the school’s stoic Head Cook, Mary. Brilliantly written and beautifully shot, Payne delivers a magnificently rich 1970s time capsule, a nostalgic, warm embrace of a film, and undoubtedly a future festive classic.

Da'Vine's character was clearly the mother to those misfit boys -- she provided the nurturing they sorely missed and needed. makes sense -- christmas stories need a mother named mary.

I'm glad it's getting this recognition. I loved it, not knowing most everyone else would love it as well.

its so crazy that this film is an awards success.
it's an okay film... a grumpy teacher gets humanized by a flawed student and underappreciated coworker....
it's okay..... i don't get the awards hype with the film.... but it was worth a watch. nothing groundbreaking though.

It's a mainstream film with real fully formed characters, actual dialogue performed by great actors, and a human scale. Not groundbreaking but becoming a rarity, so all us old farts who remember that stuff, really like it.

well said -- boomer here -- value films that dont rely on special effects, gimmicks, casting in order to tell a story. keep it simple stupid. this film is from the heart.
