Luckily I got to meet this lovely man and his equally lovely wife Mary in the nineties, he was friendly and funny , a true story teller wether vocally or in print. I treasure a signed copy of The Bodrhan Makers that he gave to me, saying 'everybody in this book lived', he told me that growing up in his Fathers pub and listening to conversations, fired his imagination to write.John B was a chronicler of the times, Ireland owes him a great debt, a truley lovely man.
Having lived in Listowel for a while in the Mid-70s. I had many a pint in John's Pub enjoying his entertaining conversation and stories. Listening to him speak, he could almost make you feel like you had experienced the time yourself. A pleasure in life to have been his company
I know how you feel, I get the same for my grandparents generation who would have been kids and young adults in the 30s and 40s, I remember my granny pushing me around in the buggy down "meet street" and Thomas Street and the real old dublin accents that are almost gone now, it's sad to see that go
