  • John B Keane talks in 1963 on Teilifis Eireann about his upbringing in Listowel Co Kerry, his schooldays, early working life and leaving for England in 1952 (rebroadcast RTE 1 23 July 2012). Keane confirms combined anti-Irish, anti-black prejudice in signs posted on lodging house windows. After arriving at his destination, Northampton, Keane reported:
"... we came to a lane where he [Keane's friend 'Murphy'] lodged. It was a bad, grey, dirty little street. On the windows of some of the houses was written, 'No Dogs, No Children, No Negroes, No Irish', and in italics after this, 'This means you Paddy'."
This phenomenon was confirmed, from an Afro-Cribbean perspective, in 2106 by Bristol mayor Marvin Rees: My dad arrived to signs saying: 'No Irish, no blacks, no dogs’ (www.theguardian.com/cities/20.... Some historians have attempted to refute the reality of this phenomenon - see www.irishpost.com/life-style/.... Story of leaving Ireland at approx 12mins, arriving in Northampton at approx 15mins.
