    Those things are pretty fun. The Mk. III and SL-X are super similar in that both have the gain sensitivity knob which essentially controls a boost in front of the preamp; the difference being that the Mk. III's boost section is solid state and has some clipping diodes in it, while the SL-X uses a tube instead.

    Cool video! I have one of these, bought it for about $600-650 a couple of years ago. Currently using it in my death/thrash band, with a Maxon OD808 in front of it for a little extra clarity. We're playing in C standard, and it works great for that type of music. It's a bit muddy at lower volumes, but it clears up a lot when you crank it (I usually just use the A channel, with the volume up at about 6-7). Cheers from Sweden.

    Great review, quick, straight to the points, well done. Ive had an original red tolex 50W SLX since the 90s. Unless you need a really clean tone (which you would go for a Vox or Fender anyway) these things can dial in basically any Marshall sound. It has way more gain than I ever used and takes Delay, Chorus, Flanger pedals just fine. And all tube, no diode which I think was the main knock on the other 900s. If you want just one Marshall head to cover 70s through 90s sounds IMO this is your best choice.

    My SLX 100 watt sounds fantastic! Love it! A different great tube overdrive compared to my early 70's Superleads. You know how to get these amps in the tone zone Kyle. Great ears definitely. My SLX has 500 volts on the plates of the power tubes. This definitely explains why this amp can cause hearing loss quickly....it can get extremely loud! Like hear it in the next zip code loud!

It's classic Marshall with a shitload of gain or not a shitload of gain. Can sound like an 800. Can't do that with a JVM or DSL 100

  • @michaelk9943
    @michaelk9943 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I’ve got a 100 watt SLX. Love it. More so than my JVM. One thing though, I had to have it modded to handle todays AC voltage. It needed resistors to handle 120v. It kept popping the main fuse then eventually blew all three fuses and the main and messed up the power tubes. After I had already had new tubes put in it. It’s a 96 so made in Britain, the Brit’s didn’t foresee the US power grid upgrades. So if you go buying a 30 year old Marshall make sure it’s ready for more than 110 wall voltage. It’s an expensive mistake that not all techs know about.

      @charlesb7831 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spitfire27028 something I've noticed with my Jcm800 is the type of boost you hit the front end with. On my pedal board I have several in line. I have an Ibanez Nu-tube screamer,MXR zakk Wylde overdrive (cream version), BOSS 40th Anniversary SD1. Now keep in mind I'm running a stereo setup thorough an Earthquaker Swissthings pedal and it has its own adjustable boost. So all the boosts work ok, sound good, but when I want to hit the preamp hard, I use the Ibanez Nu-tube screamer, it's an 18 volt and drives the front end better then an original. Then when I want a little more, I hit the clean boost on the Earthquaker Swissthings pedal and it's perfect. Some ideas for you to check out maybe! That Earthquaker Swissthings as well as the Ibanez Nu-tube screamer are highly underrated and very under utilized!

    • @charlesb7831
      @charlesb7831 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@spitfire27028 well it's different for each amp, and this is where trial and error comes in. On my Carvin X50B I use to run it on the dirty channel, but now I run it on the clean with the Marshall. The Marshall Jcm800 combo is a single channel so no choice really , for me I turn down the treble and turn up the presence and Pre amp. I also swapped out my Celeston Wolverine speaker for a Eminence DV-77 Mick thomson so that drastically changed sound (for the better lol). I do gain stack the Ibanez Nu-tube screamer with the clean boost on the Swissthings, but I also gain stack it with the Boss SD1. When I add the Peavey stereo chorus 212 with thoes amps, it's on the Lead channel. Hope that makes sense, maybe a bit more then you wanted to know lol

    My 3rd amp ever was a 100w JCM900 dual reverb head with a 1960 4x12, my dad made me get it 😊. It did not have much gain at all. I know this slx version has more gain but the more videos i see demoing JCM 900's the more i think my one was broken, maybe a preamp tub was broken? but i did not have the experience to know it 🤔. Got me into pedals though 😁. I also had JCM 2000 TSL60, TSL100 and DSL100 but i have to say the JVM is marshalls best ever i think.

    I had a 5881 SL-X and it was cool, but it was woofy. Admittedly I didn't spend much time with it to understand the way the pots affected the sound. It sounded great for the classic rock, but I didn't get the sound I was looking for. I preferred my VHT Pittbull, so I moved it along. I did have a JCM900 MK III and for me, that was my preferred version of the JCM900 lineup. It was a 50 watt EL34 version; and because of that I would love to try a 50 watt EL34 SL-X at some point. You did get some great tones from this amp!

      Cool ya had both models...👍The MK-III was the 800 carry-over I didn't hear much about till way later. Sadly....boosting an SLX to get the preferred response/feel seemed childish back in the day.....EMG's were the preferred problem solvers I guess. Great amps! The VHT's out of the box were able to provide what so many were looking for at the time......but seemed to only shine with VHT-CL-50 speakers? My Ultra-Lead was very dry sounding and didn't gel with V-30's......which ended up being a deal breaker in the end. peace.

      @@Auen73 I prefer to not have to boost an amp, but anymore I have come to just expect it. I had a VHT Pittbull 50CL (that I gave to a friend) and currently own the 100CL. I also own two FatBottom cabs, a 4x12 and 2x12, that had V30s. I really dislike V30s so I pulled them. Right now the 4x12 has Jensen Raptors and the 2x12 has Jensen C12K2s. They are both better than the V30s, but the C12K2s are my favorite.

      JCM900 Models 2500, 2501, 2502 & 2100, 2101 according to google. Which wasn't labeled SLX before 1993. Marshall added an extra tube for the added gain stage of the SLX, where the models are identified 2100SLX and 2500SLX.

    Really killer amp and guitar pairing. If you're looking for another underrated, inexpensive and awesome high gainer, you might like a Laney GH100L. They're basically like a JCM 800 2203 but with an extra preamp tube that can be switched in/out as you wish, so you can really get a lot of extra distortion compared to a stock 2203 if you like. Brutal, powerful sounding amps that sound great even as low as 2 on the master volume. They can totally get into thrash without any pedals cause of the extra gain stage,
