- Active Track is the Follow Me feature of the DJI Mini 3 Pro. This is a beginner's guide to Active Track, as well as a demonstration and test to see how good Active Track actually is, and if you can trust the follow me feature of the DJI Mini 3 Pro. Im trying to get the DJI Mini 3 Pro drone to chase me through the forest while walking and running.
When will Active Track fail?
Are there any circumstances where the Active Track is not reliable?
Let's do the best active track test and let's see if the DJI mini 3 pro and active track will be able to catch up without losing me and without crashing.

Really amazing functionality! Glad you adressed the safety settings regarding "hover" and "bypass". Quite crucial and should be activated by default by software when chosing "follow me". Great video as usual Mats!

I use a simple elastic band to hold my propellers in place. Works really well. And I keep an couple extra in my bag in case one breaks etc. They do a great job at a great price. Do not have the fancy look of yours but if I am using them the drone is in the case in most cases. But to each his own.
Super cool! I’ve only flown my new Mini 3 Pro a couple of times and I am inspired to go out and try the active track right now. For starters, though, I’m going to do it in an open field! Trees and woods can come later 😅! Thanks for these awesome videos!

Not safe in the weeds, because it doesn't have sensors on the sides, it will easily hit a branch while moving sideways to keep you in the image.

I mentioned that I removed the sticks technique on your previous tracking video, but I didn't know about the "hover" instead of "RTH" setting. I have crashed mine twice now, once backing it into a balcony without turning off the collision avoidance setting. Second time parallel active tracking on my MTB when it struck a telegraph pole due to no sideways collision avoidance.

I think altidude is an issue when it comes on active track on a street. If the drone decides to fly lower it could be hit by ongoing traffic.
That is very correct. The active track and obstacle avoidance is not really calibrated for objects that is moving towards the drone as compared to stationary objects.

Great video 😉 l didn't think to change the RTH to Hover, so good advice 👍 My drone also eventually clipped some small branches, bringing it down 😢
One time though following me on a mountain bike facing towards the sun it went straight into a pine tree 🌲 bringing it down and breaking off the camera 😔 obviously having the setting changed to Hover might have prevented it. But it wasn't like it lost connection otherwise it would of started the return home sequence. It's like it didn't pick up this pine tree , I could only think facing into the sun had something to do with it 🤔
I would put some money on the sun… 😳

No, if you are referring to the zebra lines. Only over exposure warnings on the monitor and screen recording. It in the drone recording :)

I'm using Mavic Air...This is a big step in tracking & obstruct avoidance. But I hope next version could be better at thin branch avoidance. And at that time I may decide to upgrade...😆👍

I tried something similar last week after having my drone for 2 months and it was about 7 feet up in the air and a bit windy and the branch clipped the top sending drone to ground. The gimbal arm cover cracked taking the full force on the concrete path. The gimbal cradle kind of popped open and was cracked on the bottom but was able to clip it all back in. Just tested the gimbal today and it looks like I’ve had a lucky escape and won’t have to send it into dji just yet. I’ve ordered a new plastic cover off Ali express. Tough little bastard

That's wicked to know. One day I'll get the 3 pro but for now my DJI mini se flymore combo is still great just no . Well apart from lateral flow underneath which does do obstacle avoidance. Actual avoidance it hasn't got any in reality even if underneath it's capable of elevation of an obstacle if it has time to read it first so c mode it works above that it works but not so educated as such like the 3 pro does. I knew at some point it would fail but that's because the object was so small. Ok at low levels but much higher that could of been costly 😉. Still great video and wicked top tip turn off Rh set to hover. Which I questioned this function but as you've showed it has his purpose. No one wants a drone flying up high uncontrolled in a woods when 💩 happens 😉👌🫶👌😉

Actually, I've tested tiny branches at slower speeds, avoidance works, but higher speeds is pushing it.

Mini 3 pro doesn't have side sensors. Try its bigger brother, the mavic 3 pro. It have front, back, side, bottom, top sensors.

I have the feeling that that works even better than on the Mini 4 Pro
This drone is newer and has 360° sensora but i have the feeling that the Mini 3 Pro has a better resolution in the front because of the more narow lenses in the Front

how bout in city or small village? avoiding electric poles and electric cables?
I would imagine that the poles would be no problem, but the cords could be a potential problem to detect.
I wish mine would follow my vehicle from behind at 6 ft or so. I can locate it and identify the vehicle. But when I hit active track and go, it just sits there looking at me drive away. However, when I raise the drone directly above the vehicle it follows. 😂 mine has a problem.

The drone maps the surrounding while flying forward. Thanks to that it can fly sideways to avoid obstacles.

Like it is not crashing the trees right ? How does it work when it does not have the sensors on the side ? May I know. Just curious.
I have this drone and the active track doesn't work great if you are moving fast. I tried it while mountain biking and the second I move behind an object, it just flies off. I will be behind something, like a tree, for a second cause I'm moving quickly. Drone loses me. Been disappointed with it so far. Camera is great, though. If I could, I'd return it and save up for the Skydio. Much better action drone and you don't need a huge controller.

The 3 pro has side obstacle avoidance sensors which the mini 3 is missing. Duplicating your active track with a mini 3 would be a disaster
Actually. The 3 pro has forward and backwards sensors. Not sideways. 3 has no sensors except downwards.
Wish I bought the pro just have mini 3.
There are indeed some things you need the Pro to be avid to do. But a good thing is that you can sell your mini 3 and get the Pro. I sold my mini 3 the other week and I actually got a fair amount when selling it.

Test faild, i was going to buy dji mini 3 but it hit the branch so i am going to buy mavic mini 3. i dont need pro version. Thanks for letting me decide. active track faild, it shouldn't hit the branch even 1 time.

I think it's irresponsible to recommend removing the sticks while in flight even on active track. Suppose the active tract malfunctions and now you don't have quick access to control the drone because you have removed those important control features.

I hear you. What I’m referring to is that the biggest issue would be that it’s loosing the tracked object and the drone will be stationary in the air 😁

Dat is not my experience... my mini3pro did not see a small obstacle and is now still in Austria at a mountain.
You are carrying two things in your hands,what are they?

The drone flew sideways before the crash. The drone didn't have side sensors.
The drone flew into the branches straight forward. Also. The drone is set to bypass and it will then fly sideways to go around obstacles. The drone is mapping the surrounding while flying forward just so it can perform sideways flight to get around obstacles
IMO, the mini 3 tracking is better than mavic 3
Thanks! Suppose I'm travelling on a bike, car, boat..... in a not return back travel. How do I prevent RTH due to battery to kick in?
I did a similar flight manually steering the drone. Suddenly RTH kicked in, based on battery life for RTH, the drone turned around before I managed to cancel RTH.

No. The DJI mini 3 pro has no sensors upwards! The forward sensors have a 90° total view. Not 90° upwards.
If it avoids an obstacle above it’s because it’s also visible in front or behind.
