  • Wizards and Warriors starts a new animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Dragon Age. In the waning years of the Blessed Age, reptilian wings blanketed the sun. Dragons, thought to have been hunted to extinction centuries earlier, reappeared in the skies above the world of men and devastated the countryside of Orlais and Nevarra. Reading this as an epochal omen, Faustine II, Divine of the Chantry, declared a new age: the Dragon Age, which in her holy wisdom, she predicted would be a time of violence, upheaval, and dramatic change. Thus begins the period in which the titularly named Dragon Age games take place, yet this is not where the history of its world begins. In our first video we talked on the vibrant and tumultuous continent of Thedas, explored the immortal hubris of ancient Elvhenan, and the rise of the Blood Mages of Tevinter ( • Fall of Elvhenan - Ris... ), while the second episode will describe how these mages brought the Blight upon the world and how the First Blight started.

    Even when they save the world, the Grey Wardens constantly seem to be getting the short end of the stick. And I'm not even talking about their blight curse. I'm talking about how ungrateful the kingdoms of Thedas could act towards them.

      Bc from the perspective of the average folk of certain nations the grey wardens are hated. In Ferelden they were banished for attempting to overthrow King Arland. They also resort to any means necessary to prevent or defeat the blight. Blood magic, demon summoning, and they ensure some criminals don't see justice via the joining.

    Can't help but wonder how the Grey Wardens initially discovered that some people could be immune to the taint. Most people who ingest darkspawn blood die instantly. When Daveth ingested the blood, he keeled over dead in a matter of seconds and it horrified Joren so much, he refused to partake and preferred to die by Duncan's sword instead. So, at some point during the First Blight, someone must have ingested some Darkspawn blood in a battle and managed to survive somehow, realizing that he could now sense them and started to have dreams of the Archdemon. Must have been a hell of a struggle for that guy to convince people of it, when everyone can clearly see how ingesting Darkspawn blood results in instant and painful deaths.
    I imagine he had to prove his worth to them over and over again, predicting where Darkspawn would strike and where they would come from, time and time again. Eventually, he'd have enough pull to convince people in charge that it's possible for some to survive the ingestion of Darkspawn blood, but it was insanely risky. Desperate times being what they were, the people went for it anyway and thus the Order of the Gray Wardens was born.
    Imagine being that first guy, though. You're on the battlefield, fighting for your life. It's not going well and you're being overrun by superior numbers. You fight and fight until you are eventually overwhelmed as well and you go down swinging at the creature that's about to kill you. By some mad stroke of luck, you manage to deliver a killing blow with your final strike, but in the process of doing so, some of its blood sprays into your mouth and you prepare for what you believe will be your immediate and painful death. Instead, what you get is a prophetic dream of the Archdemon. And then what you know to be impossible happens. You wake up on the now deserted battlefield, alive and well. Not only that, but you can 'feel' where the Darkspawn horde move off to and which direction they took their battle in. You look around, confused and bewildered, but knowing that somehow, some way your charge isn't over yet. So you pick up your nearby sword and you head towards the nearest signs of battle, having absolutely no idea you're about to set history in motion in a major way and forever swing the balance of power around for all humanity.

    The First Blight is honestly an underrated epic. Not in the world of Thadus obviously, but in our real life world.
    Dumat ravaged the world for 200 years but in between that, there is so many tales of Desperate Battles for Survival, Defiant Last Stands, and Determined Heroes that never let hope die.
    My favorite story from this era, (leaked or imagined) by a writer for the Dragon Age RPG Core Rulebook;
    is of how a Barbarian Prince of the South marched an army all the way to the heart of the Imperium in a vein attempt to stop the First Archdemon Dumat.
    Because this line was given in but a brief mention of the many attempts from non-wardens to kill Dumat, we do not get his motivation for doing so. He could have been offered glory by the imperium, he could have been executing a pre-emptive strike in defense of his homeland, or maybe he was a genuine hero who wanted to save the world from the blight.
    Regardless, in an epic battle between the Barbarian Prince and Dumat, the Barbarians gave their lives far from home to defend a land not their own. In the battle not even 100 years into the First Blight, the Barbarian Prince managed to kill Dumat in his heroic last stand, giving his life to stop the Evil god.
    and then Dumat was spotted again a couple days later, leading his horde south.

    • @Joyride37
      @Joyride37 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I think he’s only indirectly responsible if we go off the theory the old gods are the evanuris that solas sealed away when he split the world with the veil. Though logistically that feels messy bc the Evanuris are supposed to be sealed on the fade side, while the old gods are physically present in the mortal realm.
      But they were whispering to the magisters, so maybe physically their bodies still existed but their consciousness / spirits were on the Fade side, and their whispering to open the fade to get to the golden city part of some plan that went awry (Corypheas did say it was “already black” when he walked in on it. Implying that it was corrupted by something blight like before they arrived. Or maybe their very arrival turned it black the moment they opened the fade. Who knows atm)
      The blight though is pretty heavily linked to the Void (maybe the void essence made manifest in the world), which is a separate thing that even the Evanuris seemed to fear when they were in power.
      Which begs the question to me, using the theoretical lens that old gods = Evanuris (who feared the void) and blight = from the void, and the golden city was already black (presumably from blight), why they would whisper to the magisters in the first place

    Another good video. Again, only a couple of mistakes. Chantry theology is that, by this point, the Maker had long ago already imprisoned the Old Gods beneath the earth for turning the hearts of mankind away from the Maker. The Tevinter Magisters had only ever encountered the Old Gods in the Fade, but they believed that the Golden City was the Throne of the Gods. The Chant of Light says that they weren't there at all, it was always the Seat of the Maker. Since you did talk about Broodmothers, I'm not sure where the idea that "any who beheld the tainted Magisters became Darkspawn" comes from. It's not mentioned in the Chant of Light or in any other source of lore I know.

Naturally, it makes zero sense that the Wardens had no clue of a being, who started the entire mess that caused their creation in the first place, rampaging across the known world for months and/or a year+. Either the Grey Wardens *couldn't* respond to the threat of Corypheus, due to events not seen during the game, or its a massive plot hole by Bioware, most likely due to them losing so many experienced and well versed writers/creators. It's not as if Grey Wardens just sit and wait for a Blight to happen. They are constantly undertaking expeditions against Darkspawn, wherever they're found, as well as having an extensive intelligence network throughout the known world. Personally, my money is on it being a glaring plot hole. Bioware's writing has went downhill from Dragon Age 2/Mass Effect 3 and onwards, which is honestly a shame considering the properties we're talking about. This honestly (DAO) is my favorite RPG of all time. Then the second one happened. Inquisition is ok, but the lore for this series is so vast and deep. I spent hours in the first game just collecting all the codexs and then reading them. Which drove to online research, which led me to find out there's not enough lore for my liking. Hopefully the fourth keeps this series alive.

I love this channel to death, but sometimes it's clear whoever gives the copy to the narrator doesn't include a proper guide to how certain fantasy names are pronounced. I give leeway on names that have maybe only been officially mentioned by an author in some obscure interview...but Corypheus' name was pronounced consistently all over DA:I by several voice actors. Unless they pronounced it differently in the DA2 DLC (which I confess to not have played), this is an oversight.

    Would you be willing to make your next video on the topic of the Void and Wellspring, the Titans, how they tie into the history of the Elvhen and the Old Gods, and the speculation of the Old Gods being the Evanuris? Would the post-veil Fade have tainted them as well, given they were locked in there for so long, and would that turn them into dragons? Does the Fade go underground as well, far enough to make a path to where the Arch Demons sleep? If lyrium is down there I don't think it's too farfetched a theory. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on it.
    The DLCs of Inquisition are probably the most thrilling parts of the game as far as uncovering history goes.

    The lifespan of Grey Wardens after the Joining has been retconned, as I understand. Yes, the first game says it's thirty years until the Calling takes the Warden, but writers have since said that they regret giving a specific time for it and that it can in fact vary greatly between Wardens.

    • @SeventhheavenDK
      @SeventhheavenDK ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There has never been said something like that by the writers.
      And the information you mention is actually in the game itself, but a lot of people are taking it out of context.
      It is simply mentioned that for Wardens recruited during a Blight is harder to deal or block the nightmares, because the Archdemon is calling the Darkspawn and the Wardens can hear it.
      It has nothing to do with the Wardens getting the Calling before time, and dying prematurely, or Wardens getting the Calling in before or after others.
