Excellent Work..Team BWM..... Flipkart being the poster boy of Indian Startups has a huge and enriching history...for most of Indians our first online Mobile purchase would have been from Flipkart..... The midyears of the last decade particularly when Flipkart Amazon Snapdeal were going all guns blazing with Big Billion Days , Full page Ads front and back .....
I was proud of Flipkart for being such a successful e-commerce company in India & from India, till it's got sold to Walmart; same story again, foreign companies own everything.
Yeah, Abinash, I would really love to see a couple of Indian startups to grow into global giants without selling out to a foreign company. However, I think, Flipkart's story would have been different, had the founders had more say in the company and were not ousted. -Varun

If I experience amazing customer service and feel like I am valued and can trust and rely on the company, I will forgive almost anything, and will happily tell my friends and family about that company. Before Flipkart Indians (myself included) believed that online shopping equals to a scam. I remember looking at some Chinese watches on rediff.com and used to ask my parents for those but they would always say no LOL. I had heard about amazon through Hollywood and wished that India too had a similar service and it appears god listened to me because now I have not only Flipkart but Amazon too and even Amazon USA is delivering to India now.
Yes, that is something that became clear to me while Varun and I were working on the script - people were genuinely scared to plug their credit card details in online. I tried to put myself into that headspace during the "They had made a mistake - nobody wanted to buy mobile phones online" part of the video. Hackers and bugs and glitches were something that people were genuinely concerned about. I think that at that time, the internet was still kind of new for a lot of people, and there was a lot of mystery and confusion about what was and wasn't safe. For example, I remember trying to stream movies online and downloading music from LimeWire and my parents telling me that if anything happened to the family computer, it was my fault because I had probably downloaded a virus. Anyways, I'm glad that those days are slowly moving into the past and people are feeling more secure and confident online! -Caleb
@@backstagewithmillionaires actually for me internet meant having to go to some cyber cafe and pay hourly rates so entering debit card details was out of question anyways..😅 I had my first smartphone only in 2013 it was from Micromax. @@abhishekdev258 Wow, I can't even imagine! I grew up with internet at home, from AOL dial up when I was about 8 or 9 onwards. I don't think I have ever used an internet café, and my first phone was a Blackberry Bold 9900 in 2011 I think. Sometimes, having only lived in India for 3 years, I forget how quickly this country has developed, and how different it was less than a decade ago. For you and I guess a majority of Indians, access to fast, affordable internet really IS kind of a new thing. I'm sure your appreciation of it is significantly more than folks like me from countries where we've been enjoying internet since the beginning of the millennium. Till then, you can ask these kinda questions directly to Prithvi on his livestream or to any other guests that we will be having on the show. Although, you will have to be more specific with your questions as it doesn't make sense to answer generic questions, as they won't provide much value to you or any other viewer. -Varun

Hey Shubham, this is not really a ground report but we did take a lot of time to research this and make sure we provided as much details as we could. Which is why the video ended by nearly 30 minutes long lol. -Varun
From beginning to end WOW WOW!!!!! Very well researched and very well presented and most importantly very very good conclusion. Just loved it and I learnt so much from this piece of documentary/case study. Just one minor point which should have been added atleast according to me, the fact that Flipkart's parent company was not registered in India but in Singapore otherwise you covered each and every topic so well it was a delightful experience.
Thanks as always for the awesome feedback Abhishek 🙂I'm especially happy to know that even though the Flipkart story has been told by so many people, you were still able to learn things from our documentary/case study. Also, I wasn't even sure I should add the conclusion as I was worried that the video would be too long to hold people's interest, but you make me glad that I chose to add it. Yes, I actually read your comments on other videos about the fact that Flipkart's parent company is registered in Singapore *after* we had written the script and I had recorded the entire video. Otherwise I definitely would have included this important detail. I had considered recording that part separately and then adding it in somewhere, but decided not to because there would be a clear difference in my tone of voice and audio level, which would have lowered the overall professionalism of the video. -Caleb
@@backstagewithmillionaires 😊 That Indian laws are draconian and archaic for businessmen and yet so many Indians are willing to start their own venture. 😊
Thank you so much! Our audience has been growing quite a bit since the lockdown started here in India, so fingers crossed that that trend continues even when the lockdown is over. -Caleb
My first order on Flipkart was a power bank. I gave it a try because of the COD option that others didn't have. That I feel, got a lot of people to order from Flipkart, as Debit/Credit cards were used comparatively less in those days.
That was a game changer for Flipkart, for sure. And in fact, I think that it actually helped to define the e-commerce market in India to a large extent. As I said in the video, books were inexpensive, and so purchasing them online with a credit card wasn't as big a deal for Indians as purchasing expensive tech like phones/power banks. Very interesting to meet someone down here in the comments who actually experienced Flipkart in that way! -Caleb
@@backstagewithmillionaires true. I actually tried to order a Harry potter book once from India plaza. Being in school I didn't have a card, neither did my parents own one. So unfortunately I couldn't complete the order. When Flipkart arrived on the scene, they changed the game with their COD option.
Wow, that's crazy - you've really seen the progression of Indian e-commerce then, all the way from India Plaza to today! I think I had a similar experience when I was younger, and in Canada COD has never really been a thing as far as I understand. I remember asking my parents to let me use their credit card to order, and them telling me no. Perhaps the younger generation here in India is one of the first to experience the freedom to order things without asking for their parents' permission.

Reading this comment makes me realize that for most of my life, I have been taking it for granted. -Caleb
@@backstagewithmillionaires To be honnest we also had computer classes in our school. But we were given internet access only once and that too for teaching us how to create an email.. I created my email id on Rediffmail because G-Mail was not there yet...(in 2008 I guess) and I don't remember what that id was.😂
Dial up internet, AOL, Yahoo I never experienced that.
Another inspirational story from india.. really done a good job .. Thank u for ur efforts

Amazing work you are inspiring many people but, sadly, it has fewer views.
Video highlights how well scripted and researched content this is ! Kudos to bwm team :)
Insanely great content
It is so nostalgic to see NIFTY at 5200 and how its over 15000 now. We have really come this far, and there's a lot more to do, a long way ahead.
Excellent more inspiration from Ur explaination n narration is superb ...
Hey, like can you make a video on what's step u should take after you thought a good startup idea. What's after a startup idea
That is a very broad area, Alok, we are trying to figure some content around that as well but it might take some time, we have a few thoughts for now.
Till then, you can ask these kinda questions directly to Prithvi on his livestream or to any other guests that we will be having on the show. Although, you will have to be more specific with your questions as it doesn't make sense to answer generic questions, as they won't provide much value to you or any other viewer.
-Varun
@@backstagewithmillionaires how can not it provide value, Don't you think like many people have curiosity about this question. We often see the products launched by various startup but we don't know what's happened backstage. If you could make a video around that, it will great. Or if you do not want to make a video on that, just suggest me good channel like yours.
Great video ❤️

Enjoyed watching this video
very well documented, great story telling thanks keep it up
Great case study guys, I would like to suggest a case study on ola cabs( and where it differs from Uber)
Perfect! We are getting a lot of folks requesting Ola Cabs, which is very helpful for us! Also, comparing Ola Cabs to Uber, especially at this point in time with both companies being international, would definitely make the video more relevant for a global audience, which may give our channel a boost! Thanks for the suggestion 🙂
Excellent video but you forgot to mention the partnership with Xiaomi which accelerated their growth to sell consumer electronics online!
Marvelous content,superb.
Such a great content not sure why so less views... Keep creating videos like these
Thank you so much, Pankaj. It's comments like these that keep us going despite less views. Hopefully, people will find our content sooner or later. We are aiming for sooner though. :)

I think this is the ground report, very good very much informative
Hey Shubham, this is not really a ground report but we did take a lot of time to research this and make sure we provided as much details as we could. Which is why the video ended by nearly 30 minutes long lol.

-Caleb

Awesome ❤️ need more videos like this ✨
Keep doing it bro great video
More case studies please!
We are working on them, Akarsh :)

In future, If you have any idea of doing this types of Case study videos of startups in india.then I request you to do an video on ola cabs . And this video on Flipkart is amazing guys 🙋
Hi MUTHU VEL S, thank you so much for the suggestion. We are thinking that what we'll do is make a short list of companies that our subscribers have recommended that we make case study videos on in the future, and reach out to each of these companies directly in the hopes that we can connect with the founders and get some personal insights on their journeys. So we're really hoping that Ankit Bhati and Bhavish Aggarwal are open to sharing their stories with us! 🙂
